This is all such a bizarro world.

However it’s such a double edged sword.

On one hand, the idiocracy abound these days has me longing for sports as a way to escape it all.

Oh, wait, what’s that’s? Sports figures got to interject themselves into all levels of the idiocracy? Well there goes that idea.

Bow to the moral majority. 17ers are doing the same **** they raised hell on the "moral majority" religious zealots did in the 80's.

Follow our commandments to whatever letter we deem socially appropriate today or be damned to be crucified on the Twitter cross of politica/lsocial shame.

Huh. Interesting comparison.
Ironic in many instances, given the traditional alignment of most arguments, that many who are having a rough go right now would have aligned with that 80s moral majority ideology.

I hadn't considered that comparison before.

Good for him. He's been living around NOLA long enough to learn how to crawfish...caved to the pressure but he was wrong to begin with. It has nothing to do with disrespect for the flag. I served in the military for six years am no libtard.

“I realize this is not an issue about the flag. It never has been.”

Good for Drew; I think that’s where most Americans are now. Big change from 2017.

You aren't going to escape the BLM movement in sports. Not on tv nor at College games.

Every knee will bend at NFL games this year, Goodell included. Brees had no choice or be ostracized from the league. Kap will be made into a national hero this season.

I don't know all of the details of this story, but I have two questions:

1) when the NFL plays games this season, is it going to permit its players to kneel during the national anthem?

2) is Drew Brees going to kneel during the national anthem?

My opinion:

There's a "time" and a "place" for everything. Reasonable people know this.

Regarding any sort of protest for any reason, the appropriate/proper "time" and "place" does not include during the playing of the national anthem just before games at NFL stadiums.

Kneeling during the national anthem = showing disrespect for the flag, our national anthem, and our country as a whole.

Goodell has issued a statement saying he is 100% supportive of the players on social issues. If the players want to kneel, at any point, they will be allowed.

Why not kneel for a minute or two after they've taken the field for the kickoff ? No distractions then and everyone knows exactly why you're knelling. No debate about country and flag....just doing it for your cause.

Exactly. If the intent is not to throw shade at the country, why not do it at a different time and quit doing it at a time that creates more division and distracts from your point? Some people ARE offended by it and always will be no matter how many times you tell them "it's not about the flag or the military!"

The truth is Kaepernick WAS trying to throw shade at the county when he started this and his actions and speech showed that. His Twitter was filled with hate towards America, his Castro shirts, cop pig socks, etc.

The whole thing got off to a bad start and it's hard to forget all that. I guess we will and just move forward with kneeling during the anthem being a thing, but it just seems like there's a more unifying path forward. Kneel right before the anthem or just after. Creating controversy not related to your stated cause isn't actually productive, but people seem convinced it's necessary...even though that hasn't helped matters so far.

I believe it's been proven this week. It doesn't matter what anyone thinks but the players.

what they want to do to protest, they will and the nfl will support them 100.

it will be interesting to see if it affects attendance. I think stadiums will still be full regardless of stance on the anthem and flag.

I mean, I could punch my mom and tell her it’s me fighting for equal rights, but at the end of the day... I still punched my mom. How exactly does one refuse to stand for the flag and then say it’s not about the flag?

Make no mistake, these folks have every right to kneel, but they don’t have the right to do so and then tell me how I should perceive it. My perception is my right

In the same way, You don't have the right to tell THEM why they are kneeling or HOW they should protest. That's not how it works in the Constitution of the United States of America. Your perception is your "feelings". Protesting is a right.

That’s a liberal/activist/Jane Fonda interpretation.

I’m betting the silent majority still don’t see it that way, and don’t give a shiz about kaepernicks reasoning, it’s about his character or lack of it.

I do not disagree in the least, but that's exactly why I'm not attacking their right to protest nor am I saying they can't do it during the anthem. However, I take issue with those telling me how I should feel about it because I still just "don't get it".. They have the right to protest, not to tell me whether I agree with their decision to do it during the anthem

Area Bricklayer in MAGA Cap Denounces Drew Brees's Apology. People with actual cultural and political power, people who work in America's major cultural and political institutions and in major American businesses think otherwise or remain silent. Bricklayer to still watch NFL and college football and continue to criticize things he can't actually change or prevent from happening. Bricklayer likely required to change professions within 5 years when Republican-sponsored immigration reform bill written by the US Chamber of Commerce and Koch-funded lobbyists increase the number of immigrants from Mexico and Latin America who become bricklayers.

If you asked me about drew kneeling 3 days ago, I'd say no way. Now, who knows? He might do it, and burn an American flag too. The latter part is sarcastic, but not the former.

Drew Brees has done a ton to help NOLA, which is a majority black city. Now he's labeled a "racist"? 17 that. And 17 Drew's response to that label.

There are some of you folks who hold these symbols to be sacred, almost religious when in fact they are not. They are just symbols. Same goes for statues, the stars and bars, 50 ft. crosses et al. The meaning of these symbols is interpreted be each individual differently, based upon their own personal life's experiences. When I find myself getting all worked up over things like this I am reminded of my religious beliefs and the warnings contained therein.

"Ye shall make you no idols nor graven image, neither rear you up a standing image, neither shall ye set up any image of stone in your land, to bow down unto it: for I am the Lord your God."

Symbols are unimportant. How one lives one's life and how one acts towards his or her fellow humans is what is important.

If all these symbols were to disappear tomorrow would it affect your ability to provide and care for yourself and your family? Would life as we know cease to exists? I think not. It would affect you only as much as you allow it to.

Personaly, as a veteran, I show due respect to the flag when the National Anthem as played and at other times when said due respect is called for but I'm not going to go all apeshit crazy over others who, due to their own individual life's experiences, believe differantly.

Makes you wonder if there's a compromise where the league schedule a 30-second moment of silence to honor BLM prior to every kickoff. In turn, players and coaches agree to honor the flag/anthem

Why not just don't play the National Anthem before the game? That way people can kneel, lay down, or whatever they want to do before the game and it doesn't disrepect our country or flag. It'a a hell of a note we're having this conversation anyway, especially when 76 years ago today we were fighting on the Normandy beaches for our freedom.

Just when I started back to watching some nfl all this stuff rears it’s ugly head again. As for me,I’m going to exercise my right and not watch it anymore again. I sure won’t lose any sleep over it. Just like the ol saying goes: “You have to stand for something or you’ll fall for anything “. No one should have to retract what they believe in just to cater to those that disagree with them.

Here's a solution.

Why not kneel for a minute or two after they've taken the field for the kickoff ? No distractions then and everyone knows exactly why you're knelling. No debate about country and flag....just doing it for your cause.

Get a flag. Get a flag code appropriate display. Put it on the opposite side of the room your TV is in. When it's time to respect the flag, you stand, face the flag, and respect it. Your fragile eyes and emotions will then be spared the sight of possible disrespect and you can do things your way. Done.

If you happen to be at a sporting event and you are looking around to find others disrespecting the flag, then you are a hypocrite that doesn't follow your own set of rules.

If you are simply tired of the coverage, turn the source off.

You left out one word: Peaceably.

Since you mentioned the Constitution, the First Amendment states: "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the government for a redress of grievances."

Looting, rioting, and setting fire to buildings is not peaceable. Nor is defacing national monuments and other such things a right.

It doesn't mention it, but it likely means assemble without blocking public access, such as freeways and roadways.

The invention of Twitter was one of the dark points in our history. Trump should have sense enough to stay off it, Brees should have sense enough to stay off it. Leach should have sense enough to stay off it.

Leave Twitter for teenage girls.

Well of course the protests need to be peaceful. Thats why there are words for when a protest goes wrong- riot and looting being two such words.

While protesting is exercising a right, vandalism and looting of property and easily categorized as not acceptable.

Maybe we could

just let the folks who want to kneel, do just that....and let the ones who want to stand, do that too...watch game...drink some beers...call it a day.

I wonder what would have happened if folks just ignored Kaepernick when all this started, instead of getting their knickers in a knot. He might just be a no name back up QB with a ****** haircut.

Drew looked bad saying something that was true but he should have known would be highly controversial, now he looks even worse and completely unprincipled with his total reversal. He didn’t become reformed and educated in 12 hours, he got blowback and caved. Lost a lot of respect for him. It’s a lose, lose for him.
