Yes, good for him! Crazy couple of days. Franklin played his hand well seeing what actually happened. Both USC and LSU hired coaches better then Franklin.

I know it's a long shot, but if he doesn't get the ND job, I would love to see Marcus Freeman at PSU, he probably wouldn't be here long, but he be a pretty awesome hire.

Be careful what you wish for and all, but I think we could benefit from a new DC. Pry has been really consistent, but I think we have sort of been figured out a bit. I just hope instead of promoting within, Franklin gets new blood that can help on both sides of the ball

When he was rumored for the Louisiana job last week I told someone it would suck to lose him as he is a solid coach, but I think it may have been time for him and PSU to part ways.

It's on CJF and Sandy now to find someone just as good or better.

Def be rooting for the Hokies now.

Yup. And I don't claim to know what is out there, but a guy with Linebacker coaching in his past would be welcome. I think Poindexter has done a nice job with the secondary and Scott is fine if he gets some horses, but a DC that simply cannot live with missed assignments and poor tackling from the 2nd level would be awesome.

Not ideal from a recruiting perspective. Pry will take some players with him. Franklin’s former staff would include 3 head coaches (assuming Pry goes to Tech), and two OC’s at major programs. JoMo rumored for HC at Akron. Franklin should be an AD. He can spot coaching talent. Wish he could coach.

If true, wonder if any positional coaches leave with him for a promotion.

Maybe we can find a coach who will teach (and enforce) proper tackling technique.
You honestly think proper tackling is not taught and emphasized?
Seriously?
Please give us your wisdom on what proper tackling is and how it should be coached. Are there missed tackles? Yes. Does that mean proper tackling is not taught? No.
When I watch a ball carrier cut of his inside foot and fall, I’m not dumb enough to say - I wish Penn State would teach proper running techniques.
Anything these boards can do to tear down coaches, they will.
Just plain stoopid.

I have seen far too many missed tackles by PSU players launching themselves like armless missiles instead of staying on their feet, keeping their head up, hitting with their shoulder, and wrapping with their arms. Can that be done in every situation, on every play? No, but when it can be done and isn’t done (fear of getting hurt? Wanting to make a highlight reel hit? Never being taught properly?), and the failure is repeated without consequences, it is only logical to blame the coach(es).

If you can’t see that (and don’t realize that #12 is the poster child for this in 2021) then you either haven’t been paying attention or don’t have a clue about proper tackling technique. And your RB falling ā€œexampleā€ is possibly the worst straw man ever, so kudos for that.

Good for Pry, he deserves a shot. But as other have mentioned, there are concerns now…recruits flipping, other coaches joining him at VT, and (although less likely) some current players portaling to VT.

Pry in practice:

ā€Brandon, throw that shoulder! Come on now. No hands. Lower the shoulder!ā€

I would love to see a Defensive Coordinator who builds a defense that doesn't lose a 4th quarter lead by getting shredded by mediocre QBs who sit in the pocket for 12 seconds and then nail wide open receivers as if they were Heisman QBs. It happened all too often under Pry.

But in fairness, the offense would put up 3-and-outs in the 4th quarter instead of being able to burn clock and get 1st downs, so there's that...

Whatever, this is college football now. After seeing Oklahoma's coaching staff, current/recruited players flipping, we could not possibly think we were impervious to it all. This is going to be the way moving forward, the teams that adapt to the new world will be better for it. That is why I was saying last year Franklin needs to recruit transfer players like he recruits high school players. We are going to have to have to have coaches and players on speed-dial all year long now. I don't like the system, but it is what it is.

Terrible hire for VT, they've really become a mediocre program.

Rough loss for us, Pry was a stable and solid DC for many years.

John Scott probably leaves with him, which is a major bummer + who he might take with him?

Franklin has big boy money now, he needs to make a grand slam hire - especially with how bad his offenses have been.

So it’s a bad hire for them, but a big loss for us? Makes total sense

Just. need. to. keep. this. class. together.

If this happened during last year's class, I'd be like "whatever." But, this has to finally happen when Franklin has put together his best class yet.

VT has always been a mediocre program…they surged a bit under Beamer, but were never really considered a National power outside of a season or two along the way.

Are we sure this isn’t another case of a PSU coach’s agent leaking rumors to extort a pay raise?

Yes, and from your other posts as well, I can tell reading comprehension and context are difficult for you.

He was a good DC at a quality big ten program. He's only been a DC at PSU as well. If everyone remembers correctly, he was actually Shoop's LBer coach.

How exactly does that translate to a good HC in the ACC? No head coach experience, no experience overseeing an offense, no experience putting together a staff, no ACC experience. VTech panicked because of the carousel right now and hired quickly. Check out their message boards and comment sections, it's borderline Schiano/Tennessee meltdown.

Way back when I suggested Kirby Smart would be a good hire for us. I heard the same rhetoric from the board. Too old, never been a HC...

Pry right in the middle of DMV can really hurt our recruiting. He knows the players, coaches, and landscape. It's yet another reason we need to recruit nationally if possible.
Michigan was able to hire Nike McDonald away from the Ravens and their defense improved immensely. And, he’s only 34 so he can relate really well to recruits. Finding a quality DC with the ability to recruit should not be an issue.

I wouldn't mind bringing in a coach that runs a 3-4. Some of our undersized athletic DE's in the past few years may have flourished as OLB in a 3-4, including LB Parsons as we see now in Dallas.
