I read a report that Kelly was pushing for facilities improvements at ND.
Sounds familiar. šŸ¤” In the article linked in this thread it states that he wasn't looking for a raise either.

If you want a peek inside Kelly’s head, he saw certified dummies Les Miles and Ed Ogeron win NCs at LSU. He also saw that unlike when Oklahoma and USC fired their coaches, all the top recruits - especially the in state ones including two five stars - stick with LSU. What does it say about the state of college football when you believe it is easier to win at LSU where the path to a NC includes an SEC regular season gauntlet and games against Bama, Georgia, Florida, etc., - who are also vying for the same recruits - than at an absolute unicorn in Notre Dame. Need to do something fast to salvage this sport or it’s SEC and that’s it.

You’re right. Kelly is 60. Sabin, Miles and Orgeron won NCs fairly quickly at LSU before leaving or being fired. By going to LSU, Kelly gets a legit shot at a NC and a huge payday before he leaves and goes into commentary. He probably couldn’t win a NC at ND.

Kelly was up against the same thing that Lou Holtz was. Neither was able to convince the ND powers that be to give them the control they wanted, so they both packed their bags and left. Also, Kelly is going to make a fortune at LSU. The latter is probably a bigger factor here. Free reign and more money. Just win baby!

I just read the following quote from an ND fan about Kelly:

Brian Kelly is a lemon. Notre Dame is lucky to be rid of the choke-artist.

Kelly cannot win against top teams and can barely win against weak teams. It has been a frustrating 10 years watching ND barely win often with a last minute save.

It was easy to see his weakness on offense and a wonder why he could not see it with game film. His defense regularly collapsed at the end of games and few of his players knew how to tackle.

Maybe Notre Dame will finally get a real coach -- it's been a long 25 years without a coach.

ND one of a handful of teams to make the CFP. ND fans are nutters.

So the big question is when The McAndrew board fires CJF next year how many here are willing to pay our next coach $16 million a year?

And everyone was going nuts about players and NIL. Like the Kentucky dude doing a commercial for a local dentist is going to fundamentally change college football?

This is so wrong in my opinion. I've said it before that there should be a "dead" period where coaches cannot talk with other programs in-season. Imagine being an ND fan, sitting at 11-1 with a (slight) chance of making the playoffs for God's sake and your head coach is leaving. Or imagine being a player that busted your *** all year to be on the verge of making the playoffs and your coach is leaving. Even if he decides to stay and coach the bowl (or playoff) games, talk about a major distraction at the most important time of the year! Just wrong.

I completely agree. Kelly did that before when he left undefeated, bowl bound Cincinnati for ND. I thought that was wrong then too. Never really trusted or liked Kelly even though he coached "my" team.

How do you always get lost and find this board?

But his job security is lost. I guess if the money was good enough that doesn't matter.
If the reports of what LSU offered are true, it is a lot of money. I think Kelly is about 60 years-old. In that light, it isn't surprising. You're right though. He has to win and win right away. If the reports of the way he handled his departure are true, then he is also the low budget character that I always thought he was.

The reports about Riley aren't much better.

How are these guys supposed to do this though? We admonished James for his half-answers and lack of commitment. If these guys say they aren't leaving and leave, then they are liars. If they leak it to team members and coaches it is going to get out. Lastly, they don't know they have the new job until they have it. They might wait for 24 hours saying "im not leaving" then LSU comes through and says "$15M, free car, free house, free jet," now they have to decide.

Yeah. I hear you. It's pretty messy all the way around. Maybe it's a no win situation. It does not come off well though.

Remember how Bobby Petrino said farewell to his Falcons team in the middle of the season when he bolted to Arkansas? With a letter. The players weren't impressed.

"Out of my respect for you, I am letting you know that, with a heavy heart, I resigned today as the Head Coach of the Atlanta Falcons. This decision was not easy but was made in the best interest of me and my family. While my desire would have been to finish out what has been a difficult season for us all, circumstances did not allow me to do so. I appreciate your hard work and wish you the best.

"Sincerely, Bobby Petrino."

Cut throat business.

Apparently, the OU staff liked working with him. He's taking several key members with him, including Dennis Simmons. The landscape of college football just changed radically. USC will be back for sure. LSU is never that far away with the talent they have and Kelly, scumbag that he is, is an excellent, demanding, coach. He should thrive in a win at all costs environment.

Yeah what was a dirty business before just got dirtier with the NIL and transfor portal. What if the coach met one on one with his best players to gauge their interest on moving to his new school of choice with him? Not saying it happened, but it wil at some point.

Good point. With this kind of money flowing around to coaches and players mixed in with free agency(Transfer portal) we are a far way away from the sport we all fell in love with.

It's even crazier than the free agency we know in the NFL because there's no contracts with players.

Not surprised at all by this. LSU will give Kelly the control he wants and pay him a lot more money.
ND did a lot for Kelly. He wanted field turf in their stadium, he got that. He thought a Jumbotron would amp up the stadium experience, he got it. I think he got a new indoor practice facility dedicated to football only. He wanted an easier schedule, he got it. He totally pissed off the older long term fans who didn’t see the need for an of those things, other than the facility. I presume he got some breaks on admissions, too.

He was able to get ND into the playoffs but got boat raced every game. ND fans are insufferable for sure, I’ve lived with them for 71 years, but he came up short in the eyes of most ND fans.

Still, he’s a competent coach and this is really a total surprise. This year is amazing given all the open jobs.

It's deeper - and actually more fundamental - than that. ND was fine with some concessions as they relate to facilities and fan experience, but not when it comes to player accommodations and academic integrity. For example - ND football players do not have their own dormitories. They live with the regular student body. That is by design. Until recently, they had to eat with the regular student body too (Kelly was able to convince ND administrators that football players needed a training table and because of practices may not be able to make it to dinner in the dining halls every night). They are also unwilling to add majors a lot of players are interested in just to get them to go to ND. All of this is sort of admirable noting ND was still doing well and again, one of fewer than a dozen teams to make the CFP since it's inception.

I watched each of the ND playoff games in which they were boat raced. They just didn't have the talent of the teams to which they lost. They lost to some great college football teams. I know that fans spend a lot of time blaming coaches for losses, but - and I don't like the guy - those losses were not on Kelly. ND was just beaten up by far superior teams. He is an excellent coach. For one thing, the guy really knows the passing game. The LSU O will thrive under Kelly.

Yep, sounds so familiar. On message boards everywhere your coach is the worst, your DC is the worst and your starting QB is the worst. The unlove is universal everywhere. I bet if Franklin won a national championship, many on this board would say: 1) it was the talent, 2) it was his assistants, or 3) it was a down year in cfb. Everyone is a critic now that we all have keyboards.
