"Kelly, who won more games at Notre Dame than any other coach, did fizzle out in Baton Rouge, but the Rutgers job would be a much different dynamic, and Kelly is very comfortable in the Northeast."
Makes me think of Bret Bielema who had success as the Wisconsin Badger's HC
but crashed and burned when he went south to Southern Gentlemen's territory and
Arkansas didn't like his slop and dumped him.
Bret was out of place in the south , but back in the Midwest at Illinois he's doing a good job
Brian Kelly was successful on the Midwest and was a fish out of water down Bayou way.
Brian might get his mojo back at Rutgers, because he probably understands the east coast and Midwest far better than how the South is and what it takes to be accepted there
His age shouldn't be a factor, his winning ways overcome that and even at LSU
he wasn't losing (34-14) he was a Yankee that was considered a carpetbagger that didn't fit the type of person that LSU fans and boosters wanted as their HC
Yeah, Kelly seemed to be a fish out of water at LSU. He would likely fit in well at RU.

I dont know but Kelley has to be considered among the tops for interest

Im not a fan of some young guy with no experience
Agreed. Young coaches with no P4 experience is just rolling the dice. Hard to think of a better choice for replacing Schiano than BK.

Why Jason Candle
He wins. That has to the the number 1 criteria. A head coach who has won a lot of games along with championships. He’s done both.

83-45 with two conference championships. He’s from the Midwest so presumably understands Big Ten football.

I just noticed Nunzio Campinile is Candle’s OC at UConn.

Other than his stint here, I think this is NC’s first full time opportunity as OC in the FBS.

Surprised you did not know this. Probably got tired of living in the Tundra. Bring in Anthony C as HC, with Nunzio as OC.

Yea I don’t pay attention to UConn too much beyond their HC. NC hasn’t really done anything at this level yet either so he wouldn’t be a name that I’d come across in articles I read or pods I listen to online.

I’m more interested to see how Candle’s replacement at Toledo does, Mike Jacobs. Like Eck another former B10 OL(OSU) and he’s coming up the ranks like Cignetti. If he can do a solid job at Toledo for a few years he’ll probably get the chance to make the step up.

If we happen to hire Kelly and he didn’t work or did well and left in a few years then Jacobs could be a guy to keep an eye on if he does well at Toledo.

I was just ribbin' ya. I'm more interested to see how Candle does at UConn.

Speaking of Kelly, some quality replies in the post on X:

First question Keli should ask Kelly- what type of meat is in gabagool?

And here's a name that has not been mentioned.

Two different things. Anyone can fire whomever they want to fire. If they want to hire, they have to jump through several hoops to get approval to hire. Hiring a very expensive head football coach while paying a $18M buyout is going to go over real well with the engineering and med school professors looking to hire post docs and others for conducting funded research that is actually MAKING money for the university.
Is this not one of the main reasons Zinn spun off and created Scarlett Enterprise inc. to operate with money outside of the political BS?

That would work perfectly, in line with Rutgers' history of hiring other teams' assistants, with hope and a prayer. On the positive side, he would come in as an undefeated head coach

Not perfectly in line at all. He coached here for 2 years
EDIT- He also coached as DC for a guy named Curt Cignetti at JMU before Rutgers hired him, and he wisely left after 2 years.

Absolutely no reason to think he's ready to take over as HC of a B1G school. Another Ash in the making.
Hyperbole on "absolutely no reason." Please explain the following:

You could say the same about coaches with HC experience who bombed:
1. Lance Leipold
2. Greg 2.0
3. Luke Fickell
4. Bret Bielema at Arkansas (but has done well at Illinois)
5. Matt Rhule at Nebraska

On the other hand, see the following coordinators who had no HC experience and succeeded:
1. Ryan Day (OC before becoming HC)
2. Dan Lanning (DC before becoming HC)
3. Marcus Freeman (DC before becoming HC)
4. Kenny Dillingham (OC before becoming HC)
5. Kalani Sitake (DC before becoming HC)

And there are counter examples on both sides of that coin.

And he only lost that one game by 4 points against Miami, who coached in the CFP Championship game. He needs a larger body of work, but a great start.

My favorite 2 examples are Leipold and Fickel. And another one is Bielema, who bombed at Arkansas.

Mario Cristobal bombed at FIU, did well at Oregon, and got off to a rocky start in years 1 and 2 at Miami. One might have thought after 4 successful years at Oregon, he would have had Miami rolling right away.

No guarantees.

I listed the things to like about Hetherman - was Cignetti's DC. Coached defense at Rutgers for 2 years and DC at Minnesota for a year before going to Miami. He and Mario both were assistants under Greg, and not sure if that is a plus or not?

I''s a crap shoot no matter who you hire ( cuffsdoug or rutgersguy2 posted something like that on this board about hiring HCs_)
The AD just has to go after the best they think are out there and hope for the best.
Successful P-4 HCs aren't always a success when a major player in the P-4 world poaches a winner,. Just ask TAM about Jimbo .
Rich Rod probably wishes he never left the Hillbillies for the Wolverines and the same sentiment from Michigan fans .

Look for him to knock off Syracuse next week.
Syracuse may suck worse than Rutgers. Guessing Angeli will be benched in favor of the transfer QB from Kennesaw State via Wofford. Angeli has 5 INTS in 3 games, in the running with Lonergan!

The last 2 HCs at RU have been defensive coaches. It hasn’t worked at the B1G level. I think the next HC should be an accomplished offensive coach, especially in regard to handling QBs. There is no guarantee of success with any HC, but in today’s football, a team has to score significant points to win games.
