Yeah, Kelly seemed to be a fish out of water at LSU. He would likely fit in well at RU.

Agreed. Young coaches with no P4 experience is just rolling the dice. Hard to think of a better choice for replacing Schiano than BK.
He wins. That has to the the number 1 criteria. A head coach who has won a lot of games along with championships. He’s done both.
83-45 with two conference championships. He’s from the Midwest so presumably understands Big Ten football.
I just noticed Nunzio Campinile is Candle’s OC at UConn.

Yea I don’t pay attention to UConn too much beyond their HC. NC hasn’t really done anything at this level yet either so he wouldn’t be a name that I’d come across in articles I read or pods I listen to online.
I’m more interested to see how Candle’s replacement at Toledo does, Mike Jacobs. Like Eck another former B10 OL(OSU) and he’s coming up the ranks like Cignetti. If he can do a solid job at Toledo for a few years he’ll probably get the chance to make the step up.
If we happen to hire Kelly and he didn’t work or did well and left in a few years then Jacobs could be a guy to keep an eye on if he does well at Toledo.

EDIT- He also coached as DC for a guy named Curt Cignetti at JMU before Rutgers hired him, and he wisely left after 2 years.

You could say the same about coaches with HC experience who bombed:
1. Lance Leipold
2. Greg 2.0
3. Luke Fickell
4. Bret Bielema at Arkansas (but has done well at Illinois)
5. Matt Rhule at Nebraska
On the other hand, see the following coordinators who had no HC experience and succeeded:
1. Ryan Day (OC before becoming HC)
2. Dan Lanning (DC before becoming HC)
3. Marcus Freeman (DC before becoming HC)
4. Kenny Dillingham (OC before becoming HC)
5. Kalani Sitake (DC before becoming HC)
And there are counter examples on both sides of that coin.
Which is why you should be quiet, this isn't a place for children.

And he only lost that one game by 4 points against Miami, who coached in the CFP Championship game. He needs a larger body of work, but a great start.
My favorite 2 examples are Leipold and Fickel. And another one is Bielema, who bombed at Arkansas.
Mario Cristobal bombed at FIU, did well at Oregon, and got off to a rocky start in years 1 and 2 at Miami. One might have thought after 4 successful years at Oregon, he would have had Miami rolling right away.
No guarantees.
I listed the things to like about Hetherman - was Cignetti's DC. Coached defense at Rutgers for 2 years and DC at Minnesota for a year before going to Miami. He and Mario both were assistants under Greg, and not sure if that is a plus or not?

The AD just has to go after the best they think are out there and hope for the best.
Successful P-4 HCs aren't always a success when a major player in the P-4 world poaches a winner,. Just ask TAM about Jimbo .

Syracuse may suck worse than Rutgers. Guessing Angeli will be benched in favor of the transfer QB from Kennesaw State via Wofford. Angeli has 5 INTS in 3 games, in the running with Lonergan!
I want a head coach with a background on offense.
The last 2 HCs at RU have been defensive coaches. It hasn’t worked at the B1G level. I think the next HC should be an accomplished offensive coach, especially in regard to handling QBs. There is no guarantee of success with any HC, but in today’s football, a team has to score significant points to win games.
So two years as a DC at the P4 level, one of which being Minnesota, and you're ready to hand over the keys? Got it.
He's in his 3rd year as a DC at this level plus multiple years at FCS and G5, how many years must someone have under their belt?
Fran was never a coordinator; Greg was only a DC for 2 years before becoming a HC.
Also, a different universe in terms of history and resources. He had the lowest win percentage of any coach this century at LSU.

In theory, but RU paying him $1M a year would not be at market value, which is a requirement of his contract.
I provided failed P4 HC's with a fair amount of HC experience.
Ryan Day- 3 years as OC before becoming HC of Ohio State.
Dan Lanning- 2 years as OC before becoming HC of Oregon
Marcus Freeman- 4 years as OC at lowly Cincinnati
Kenny Dillingham- 4 years as OC in P4
What's attractive about Hetherman is 3 years of experience under Cignetti. He's also worked under Harysimiak twice, and now for a championship level team at Miami.
Some people just believe what they want to believe.
Athletics is included. If Tate wants to make a change, it will have to go through proper channels and get approved. I never said it would not. But it will raise the ire of faculty who have been denied opportunities to hire, especially research professors who bring in a lot of research money, whereas athletics is losing money.
From the coordinator pool of candidates, I like either Shanahan or Haines just because they’ve been with CC longer and kind of came up the ranks with him.

Ryan Day is like a kid who is 18 and gets a mercedes for first car. Most coaches get a honda with the muffler falling off. Let Day coach the Cuse and see how good he is.

The shame of that tragedy is : that years later Declan Sullivan's death didn't matter when LSU wanted him and it didn't faze the imitation Irish after it happened because Notre Dame's internal investigation and athletic director Jack Swarbrick cleared Kelly of direct blame..
Winning is everything and the cause of tragedies are muted when the perpetrators are considered winners.
