According to Chip Kelly (Oregon head coach), as of this morning noone from UM has contacted him to discuss Masoli.

Yet UM admin approves his transfer this morning. They sure are concerned about about getting all the facts.

He's a talent with a criminal history. They need a QB. It's a pro/con thing now. Whatever Kelly says won't change anything.

My personal opinion is that he probably doesn't need to be playing college football this fall (traditionally there's a 1-year waiting period before you sweep stuff like this under the rug) and the NCAA should probably close the loophole that allows a player to transfer without sitting out a year if he can find some ******** major that his current school doesn't have. But I wouldn't have bitched too loudly if we'd taken him, so I'm not going to ***** about UM taking him.

I just don't like the idea of some talented transfer with baggage coming straight into fall practice never even meeting his teammates. QB is the most important position on the field. Not saying it's good or bad, but I just don't like the sound of it. Has this method ever worked, or even been tried? A guy comes into the fall never playing for the particular team and actually helps them win. JUCO QBs usually take time to develop, no matter how good they were or how similar the offense they came from was. Transfers usually sit a year, so they practice with the team for awhile and even then take time to gel with the teams they play for.

I was leary of Cam Newton coming right in and being named the starter too. Just don't know enough about what it does for chemistry. Although Newton wouldhave beena spring addition and get a little practice time, so that helps.

I really don't know enough about how the Ole Miss team perceives Stanly and/or Mackey. Is Mackey even on campus yet?

with a QB who has played 3 series and I had a chance to get a QB who was considered a heisman candidate before he messed up at Oregon, I welcome him with open arms.

I would take him too. Think about it: this guy isn't a freshman with three years left. He's got one season, and considering the QB's that are in the cabinet now, he's a great choice because they only have to keep him in line for about 5 months. After that they'll throw him to the gutter. Do you really think HDN or Boone cares about this guy getting a master's degree? They would probably prefer that he DIDN'T graduate because then they wouldn't have to claim him. Hell, most %%#% fans have put Brent Schaffaer out of their memory already.

or Newton or whoever. Rebels are in a tough position. I guess they should have recruited a bonafide JUCO QB (Mackey may be it, who knows). I guess nobody thought Snead would be gone either. Nutt probably knows as well that even if Masoli does come it's not guaranteed that the team benefits. But they could, and now at least they have a chance.

Kelly kicked Masoli off the team. What in the hell do you think he would say to Nutt and Co.? There is no need for them to waste their time asking when they know what the answer is going to be

UM already knows he's a high-risk case at this point. In the event that Kelly says some good things about the guy (not likely), I suppose that would make UM feel better about the decision, despite it not making it look any wiser/less risky on the surface to everyone else. However, in the event Kelly warns of him being a POS and a guaranteed bust, then it can only make your decision tougher and subject to more scrutiny if the public found out. In this case, what (additional info) you don't know, can't hurt you.

Agree 100% I wouldn't be bitching if I was the school benefiting from it. I can agree with the concept of the rule. Why penalize a player who wants to get a graduate degree and play football if they have leftover eligibility, right? Practically however, it's an awful rule. Is Jeremiah Masoli transferring to Ole Miss to better himself academically? Hell no, he's going to play football. Did Greg Paulus switch from DUKE to Syracuse to better himself academically? Hell no, he switched to play football. Just remove the waiver to the normal rule and let them transfer to a solid school with decent football program at a lower NCAA level and that be the end of it. That still affords them the opportunity to pursue their educational goals and play football just as well.

if I were UM, but I would sure as hell pick up the phone. Only reason not to would be you suspected something really bad, like "he's a serial rapist" bad,but knew you would take him anyway, so why open yourself up to more criticism by finding out about it before hand.

ETA: Point being, why not find out how much supervision he's going to need? You know you're going to take him, you know he's a bad apple, why not know whether he's a bad apple that loves to smoke weed (reasonably manageable for 5 months) or a bad apple that will steal from teammates and try to roofie their moms (little more difficult).

If you can just transfer to earn a different degree and not sit out a year, then why doesn't every player do that? Why can't Moultrie do that in basketball?

It sounds worse when you say breaking and entering and assault instead of kicking in your girlfriend's door and beating up the guy she is banging at the time. Not too many men wouldn't lose their temper.

If you graduate, have eligibility remaining, and want to transfer into a different school for a grad program, you can still play football without sitting. Moultrie isn't a graduate, so this waiver isn't available to him.

As far as a recommendation, what is Kelly gonna say, "run the naked boot leg." He would probably tell to be careful based on Masoli's past run ins and that he wishes Jeremiah the best.

It's one of the few rules that gives players power after they've signed their original LOI. There was a QB somewhere (Arizona?) who redshirted, sat on the bench two years, got his degree through all this, and then transferred to another school (Georgia Tech?) for two years after he saw he wasn't going to be starter after being promised the position.

Also, I think players should be able to transfer without penalty if their Head Coach or position coachleaves (just not to the school these coaches go to). Most players only come to a school because of these guys, and it's unfair for these players to be stuck somewhere because of the Coaching Carrousel.

And I'm sure Kelly doesn't give a **** whether he got one or not. The point is, you could learn a LOT about the player by talking to his former coach (and not just "run the naked boot leg"). Even if my decision had already been made, I would still call Kelly and pump him for any information he'd give me.

I was in the boat that wanted him. Since we didn't get him, they did, it's fair game in my eyes to sling mud.It goes with my life long attitude of hooray for me and 17 you. Hey, they would return the favor if the shoe was on the other foot.

but he doesn't have a previous armed robbery. He has a previous strong armed robbery. Armed robbery is putting a gun to your head, strong armed robbery is slapping a guy around with your hands so he will give you his money, think Tony Soprano. And yes, the only reason I point out the discrepancy is because it is looking like he is going to be a rebel. If he was headed to MSU, I would say I heard he robbed someone with an AK-47 and sprayed bullets in the air over their head.

Cotton and Stanley were supposed to battle it out for the QB job this year and into next year likely.

They were our 1 and 2. Mackey was never brought in with the expectation of him being a full time QB. He was recruited as an athlete to be used in multiple facets of the offense. The only reason he's even getting full-time reps right now at QB is out of necessity. If Masoli comes, he's back to being a gadget player. If Garrett comes as well to be eligible in 2011, then we have a back up for that year and Mackey can still stay as a gadget guy next year too, like was intended.

Mackey should be nothing more than an emergency 3rd string option, and I don't believe he was ever recruited to be more than that as a QB.

for being a quarterback killa, I like the idea of getting a one year guy at QB. It doesn't give Houston enough time to screw them up. Snead's best year was his first as well as Jones and Mustain. This Masoli thing might really work well. If we can just figure out how to do it every year. Might take a little cash etc. BTW, I don't think I have ever read about an AD giving a crap about a player getting an education on this board. Boone has to worry about winning ...just like Nutt and Mullen and Saban etc. Geez.

I think you are missing the point. No one from Ole Miss contacted him to get the whole story on why he was dismissed from the team or to find out if there were any other problems that weren't reported. In many of these cases they don't tell the entire story to the press. The Oregon coach is a little surprised because most decent schools would at least want to hear what the coach has to say about the kid.

And regardless of weather we would have taken him or not, Ole Miss pulled the trigger and they did something classless. Would we have done the same? We will never know. But since you guys did do it you have to take the crap that comes with it. So don't get all whiny about it.
