Dual threat quarterback Darren Owens for Brunswick dominated the first game in the team's quest for a title.[/B]

LAWRENCEVILLE- The Luray Bulldogs came into Saturday afternoon filled with confidence after falling to top seeded Riverheads in overtime. Coming in with a 7-3 record many chose Luray to come away with the upset of the weekend. They would be sadly disappointed as the speed and athleticism of Brunswick was too much for the Bulldogs from the Shenandoah Valley.

After having drives stalled due to penalties and the occasional loss by Luray’s defense, Darren Owens would break loose for a 28 yard touchdown run to give Brunswick a 6-0 lead with 4:35 left in the 1st.

Luray’s Tyler Campbell would try to get his squad moving the ball but after getting a first down their drive would too stall. After a solid punt put the Brunswick inside their own 20; Owens would strike again. Owens would cut and run by a defender and then it was a race down the home sideline 84 yards for a touchdown. 12-0 Brunswick with only 3:13 left before halftime.

Brunswick would get the ball again and Michael Wood’s 65 yard run would be called back for holding preventing Brunswick from getting another score before the half. Coach Harold William’s squad would more than make up for it in the 3rd and 4th quarters.

It didn’t appear that way to start the half as a kick off was bobbled and fumbled between the legs of Jacob Moyer of Luray but Keaton Seal would scoop it up and race down the middle of the field to the Brunswick 18 yard line. 54-yard kick-off return gave Luray new life. Luray couldn’t convert and the enthusiasm and hope of a comeback began to fade.

Soon after giving the ball back to Brunswick, Owens would escape through a mist of defenders and find daylight going 54 yards for his 3rd touchdown of the day making it 18-0 with 8:33 left to play in the 3rd.

After a great punt pinned Brunswick at their own one yard line, the Bulldog’s Marshall King would go up grab Owens pass on the home sideline right out of the air. The 6 ft 3 wide receiver has been spectacular all season long and is a gem at the position.

The 99-yard drive would conclude with a run by Treven Easter who would also get the only conversion of the day making it 26-0 with 3:18 in the 3rd.

In the 4th, Jakal Williams would take over at quarterback and it was like Owens was still on the field. Williams would burst into the endzone from 25-yards out too make it 32-0 Brunswick.

The last Brunswick score would be sensational by Williams who would race up the middle of the defense and out race everyone for an 83 yard touchdown run to make it 38-0 with 4:57 to play.

Luray would drive down into Brunswick territory as the clock was running down and on 4th down, Campbell would throw a perfect pass to Dow McGrady IV in the endzone with 1 second remaining to play. It was just enough to put a smile on most of the Luray faithful ending a very successful season.

“Our defense stepped up today and our offense did what they had to do,” said Coach Williams

Brunswick (8-3) continues their march to return to Salem as their will face Goochland (9-2) on Friday. Goochland like Luray and Brunswick share the Bulldog nickname but Goochland has been a powerhouse in 2A for years.

Coach Williams concluded, “We got a good Goochland team in their place and we have to get prepared, get refocused, and get ready for them.”
