I tell you what. You guys take the highly recruited Bryant from LT, Bean from HC and Hunt from OPRF and I will take Cole Brady from GW.
I know I heaped tons of praise on those other three earlier in the year. And I also know I haven't been the most vocal champion of my own guy. Some see me as being a non-believer and call my posts an embarrassment to GW, but I know that you can't come on this board and bulls*^t people. GW had a tough start to the season and in losing back to back, seemed to lack something. Those losses weren't on Brady, but that's OK. Rather than curl up in a ball, that kid decided to prove that he not only belonged in the same sentence as those three, but that he deserves to be the last one standing.
Yes I know, GW is an amazing program. I will keep pushing it, and you guys dispute it, but Hetlet has schemed his way into the discussion of Top 3 coaches in the state. And the GW defense has been playing out of their minds. But without Brady, we don't beat NV. Without Brady, we don't beat Eville.
The most telling throw of the day was the one just before half. Eville up 14-10 and GW moves into Eville territory with about a minute left. Although Brady had completed a couple of deep balls up to that point, Brady was in a bit of a cold spell, under-throwing a couple of balls and GW was generally losing ground on Eville. On 2nd down at roughly the 30 yd line, AJ (Edit - multiple guys made the sack but none was 99 but two plays earlier 99 put a huge lick on him after he got rid of the ball) body slams Brady to the ground leaving him in a heap. On 3rd and 18 from the 45 with a huge rush in his face, Brady stepped into the pocket and unleashed an absolute seed of a throw hitting the post route for a 45 yard TD with :45 seconds left in the half. GW never looked back.
You really can watch a high school QB develop through a year out here. Against the Brook, we looked rudderless and unsure. Against HS, we looked horrible. LT was an outlyer because our boys were in shock after watching two captains go down with gruesome injuries on back to back plays. HC game was just a little tough to swallow. While we went out to an early 21-7 lead, GW just couldn't seem to get everyone moving in the same direction in the 2nd half. Hetlet must have said the right words after that game, because everyone has come out clicking on the offense ever since.
Brady continues to improve and after today's game, he looks like the kind of leader in which guys believe. I'm a believer. All of GW are now believers. And who knows, maybe even LA will be believers on Saturday at Duchon.
Cheers to a kid for shouldering that kind of responsibility and stepping into the blitzing LB and making his best thrown of the year when his team needed it most.
