I thought **Mullins aka cousin Eddie<span style="FONT-SIZE: 125%"><span class="Unicode"><font face="Arial Unicode MS">™</font><font face="Times New Roman"><font size="3">® </font><font size="3">was on the hot seat!

<span style="TEXT-DECORATION: underline">HEAD COACHES</span>

Dan Mullen, Mississippi State: Bulldogs fans probably don't like hearing this, but Mullen is becoming a hot name among the coaching ranks. In his three seasons in Starkville, he's guided Mississippi State to two straight bowl wins and in 2010 he led the Bulldogs' to nine wins for the first time since 1999. Mullen says he's happy in Starkville, but if he continues to win, bigger schools won't hesitate to go after him.

is one 8-10 win season away from being a serious contender for some good jobs and probably two 8-10 win seasons away from being one of the hottest commodities on the market. It's clear that he's already well though of by being constantly mentioned in high profile coaching searches but with a little bit more of a proven track record, I think he'll start getting some actual offers.

I do agree that Dan Mullen took this job as a stepping stone, however, maybe I am being nieve in saying this, but I believe that with all the facilities we have built, increased success, and the fact that recruiting is getting better, he has built this program into a program that he will stay at for the long haul provided that a very few elite schools don't come after him. At this point I just can't see him leaving the program he has built with his bare hands for anyone other than the Texas', Ohio State, or maybe Georgia's of the world. The truth is that the Mullen family likes it here, and he is damn proud of what he is building.

If he had wanted to get out for anything else, he could have and would have done so by now.

Being in the SEC and with SEC money, the only real risk other than elite programs was the possibility that Mullen would go win big in an easier conference, and I don't think he's wired that way.

My only question is would he leave for a team with a good history that has fallen back to the pack and has no reason to be elite anymore (maybe Tennessee?) or does it have to be a team with a natural advantage such as a lsu, uga, texas, etc.

a) That is the worst show I've ever heard
b) The Ole Miss guy is very condescending and looks down his nose at his State "friend" co-host
c) The Ole Miss guy also sound VERY @%!$$%+$% when talking about anything Mullen
"State fans get so excited over flashy objects" "State were sooo excited about 6-6" "If you are a TRUE SERIOUS sports fan you would expect morefrom a coach and State really doesn't" "State VERY rarely finds themselves with the upper hand in this rivalry" He goes on to say that we are wasting a chance to move up the west because we are not willing to drop Mullen. "As an OM fan I say you guys have a mediocre coach"
d) Barret is a hack "Mullen is considered and up and comer due to smoke and mirrors" "if those were average Florida and Georga teams State loses" "nothing more than a mediocre head coach"

These ******** need to be stuck with a Sly Crooms for 5 or 6 years. The fact that Mullen has pulled us out of the hell hole is a 17ing miracle. The OM host wants him gone so we can take our rightful place under them and the Auburn hack makes himself sleep better at night believing that Mullen is the evil brains behind the Cam Newton cluster17.

but you gotta admit, Dan's got a pretty sweet situation here.

1) $2.7M per year, and I'd speculate that a fair additional amount is waiting in the wings if he indeed takes things to the next level
2) Full support of the AD and Alumni resulting in salary increases, facility improvements, etc. He's getting pretty much anything he asks for
3) Very reasonable expectations. Dan could win 6-10 games at MSU per year for the next decade and be a legend when he leaves here. That'll get you fired at many other schools.

People can laugh all they want at Dan, MSU, or the city of Starkville, but that's a pretty sweet gig if you ask me.

Edited to add a pretty funny link from B/R about the Mullen contract. The article isn't anything special, but the comments are amusing to read.

As an OM fan, what kind of coach would you say you have?

Actually, I think they may have hired their own version of Croom, sans hoodie, with buck teeth.

Any coach in the SEC outside of Vandy and Kentucky that is a preseason Top 25 team and there is talk of winning 9-10 games preseason, that turns out a 2-6 SEC record and 6-6 season would be catching all types of heat from most of the fanbases in the SEC, but Mullen has probably a 98% approval rating at MSU. Why leave a fan base that has fully bought in?

If MSU keeps scheduling OOC foes like they have been (Which they totally should) and he only has to get to 6 wins to keep the fan base content, he would be crazy to leave. He can't make the type of money he is making anywhere else and have a fan base that happy with the results. It gives him an opportunity to develop the program how he wants, lets him redshirt who he wants because he doesn't have to play kids immediately, and overall it can be his program.

Reallyone play could have changed the Auburn game and relly one or two plays could have changed the South Carolina game. There was a lot of grumbling after the Arkansas loss last year which was a blow out. Expectations will grow as more success comes and the memory of the Croom years fade. Right now I'm happy going to a bowl game every year and winning it. I'm ok with mid level consistency right now, we have to build a base. In the long term we can start scheduling tougher OOC etc...

However I still think Mullen would be a fool to leave except for an elite level job. He's in the SEC, which right now is the #1 conference by head and shoulders above anyone else. He's gotten pretty much everything he has wanted facility wise from the Administration (new offices and stadium expansion). Expectations are not Bama/LSU/Fla level so he can build depth etc... as he sees fit. And if he can hang on for a while sooner or later Saban will retire, Les Miles and Gene Chizik might get fired and the door will open for a run to Atlanta.

For the most part, our fan base is very understanding of MSU's situation when it comes to football. Right now, considering what he makes and will make in the future, combined with our understanding of the pecking order, there aren't many jobs that are better. He makes considerable bank for the amount of pressure that he has here and with a young family, that has to be pretty important. The only thing that could possibly trump that is if his competitive nature overrides that.

A better parallel could be that he's their Croom. The rise/fall of Nutt was a condensed version of what we had with the Kang. Now, they move on to hire a "character" guy, who's apparently able to recruit.

I fear the coach they hire after Freeze more than i fear bucky himself.

Ole Miss fans keep professing that "State fans are happy with 6-6". That's untrue. Every single one of us here were disappointed by last season. No one expected 6-6. We thought we were an 8-4 or better team. If he were to go 6-6 again this year, when our Vegas over/under is again 7.5, there will start to be quite a bit of discontent.

The fact of the matter is, the last time we had high preseason expectations that weren't met, coming off 27-11 over 3 seasons, we went 8-27 under one coach and 9-25 under the next over 6 seasons of hell, So, you can understand why we aren't freaking out about 6-6. Especially when our recruiting under Mullen is starting to improve more and more.

We knew we were razor thin on the O-line and while it was a failure by Mullen and staff to not find adequate Juco replacements, Crooms left him with so many holes to fill one of them was bound to bite us in the ***.

We had more than our fair share of luck in 2010, more or less avoiding all costly injuries and winning every toss up game. This should be the last year where Mullen's naivety at recruiting could really hurt us. After this year, assuming our player evaluation and development has been decent, we should have SEC talent at every position with at least adequate depth behind them, the first time that's been true in a long time.

That's why people were disappointed, but not upset, with 6-6 last year.

And yet another example of that classic unjustified Ole Miss arrogance. They really don't realize that, since the Vaught years THEY have been in the MSU/Kentucky area with sporadic success interspersed with mostly mediocre to bad football. And now it's clear MSU is ahead of Ole Miss by a decent margin, yet they still think they can look down their noses at us because of what they did over 4 decades ago. What a laugh!

THAT is why nobody freaked out over 6-6. 9-4 bought him 6-6. When he goes 9-4 again this season, he will have bought himself another 6-6 letdown in my book. As long as 6-6 remains the floor, and it only occurs once every 2-3 years....I'm happy.
