at the SEC media days got me to wondering something. I know back in the day that every home journal and magazine out there would declare a national champion and we know about the rebels and their journalists. But, didn't we win a national title in '41? And why hasn't Mullen been trumpeting it? The six-pack surely carries more weight when it comes to football than ladies' home journal and southern living which were two of theirs.

MSU, 1941 National Champions

I found this description of a group on Facebook at Mississippi State. Very interesting.
--

I’m almost embarrassed to admit that I have spent most of my life reading Mississippi State
football media guides. It’s something I took up as a young Bulldog fan
when Rocky Felker was near the end of his head coaching career at Mississippi State.
Needless to say there are a few random facts that I know about MSU and
its football history. For example, just off the top of my head, MSU has
had two undefeated seasons (1903, 1940) and the first bowl game in
school history was the 1936 Orange Bowl. But there is one little fact
that keeps nagging me... Alabama’s 1941 National Championship.

Alabama? 1941?

What does that have anything to do with MSU football history?

For
those “young Dawgs” out there, you may not be all that familiar with
MSU’s “golden era” of football from 1939 to 1947. In this era State
had eight straight winning seasons (no season was played in 1943 due to
WWII). This span of eight straight winning seasons included a SEC
Championship, and undefeated season, two unbeaten records in the SEC,
and an Orange Bowl victory. But there seems to be one thing missing
here, a national championship.

MSU had two particular seasons in which they came close to claiming a national championship---1940 and 1941.

In 1940, MSU went undefeated (10-0-1) and won the Orange Bowl. The season included wins over Florida, Alabama, and Mississippi.
That season seems fitting of at least a share of the national title
right? Go undefeated in the SEC…win the prestigious Orange Bowl? Wrong. Mississippi State (10-0-1) finished 9th in the final polls behind such teams as Northwestern (6-2), Nebraska (8-2), Texas A&M (9-1), and Tennessee (9-1). By the way, that Tennessee
team claims a share of the 1940 national championship. Just seems a
little funny to me that State, who went undefeated and won the Orange
Bowl, gets no share of the title.

Then there’s 1941.

As if the 1940 season wasn’t a big mystery, things get very baffling in 1941. Keep in mind that the two previous years, Mississippi State
has won 18 games while losing only 2, the Maroons are fresh of an
undefeated season and are the defending Orange Bowl Champions.
Expectations were high for the 1941 squad. In 1941, Mississippi State
lost only one game while winning eight. The only loss came out of
conference, on the road at #10 Duquesne (who finished 8th in the final
AP poll). State did not lose a SEC game that year on their way to
claiming the overall SEC Championship (only one in school history by the
way). The season included wins over Florida, Alabama, Auburn, and Ole Miss. Please notice that MSU did beat Alabama in 1941.

Alabama
finished the regular season at 8-2. In the final 1941 AP poll, the
Crimson Tide was ranked #20. If you go to Bryant-Denny Stadium, open up a
BAMA media guide, or see one of those annoying “got twelve?” BAMA
t-shirts referring to their national championships, you’ll notice that
1941 is on that list.

1941?

In 1941 Alabama didn’t even win the SEC championship, Mississippi State did. In 1941 Alabama had two losses; Mississippi State only had one (to an undefeated top 10 team on the road). Alabama finished four spots behind Mississippi State in the final AP poll. Here is the big kicker; Mississippi State beat Alabama in Tuscaloosa that season! Straight up, head-to-head, Mississippi State shut-out Alabama that year 14-0. Let’s get this straight: Mississippi State, the SEC champions, who only lost one game that year, shut-out Alabama in their own stadium and Alabama, who lost two games that season, was declared “national champions?” Does this make any sense?

The thing that makes this such a joke, is the fact that Alabama
fans wave their “twelve” national championships in our face year in and
year out, when in fact, they do not deserve twelve. If “ANY” SEC team
has a right to claim the 1941 national championship that season its Mississippi State and certainly “NOT” Alabama.

Am
I alone on this one? I certainly hope not. Please keep in mind, that
there is a certain school in this conference, which will remain
nameless, that “claims” multiple national championships that aren’t
necessarily recognized by the Associated Press. Hmm? Makes you think
doesn’t it…why shouldn’t we? Personally I think declaring yourself
“national champions” with out finishing the season #1 in the final polls
is a bit unethical (see Alabama and that “other school”).

What
can we do about it? Well, probably nothing now besides laugh when an
Alabama fans starts bragging and sticking out his chest because of the
fact they have “twelve” national championship. We know the truth. The
only other suggestion I have is to drive over to Tuscaloosa, walk right into Bryant-Denny Stadium and take that 1941 National Championship flag down and bring it back to Starkville, where it belongs, because it certainly doesn’t belong in Alabama.

the only thing that kept us from being recognized is that we weren't putting out journalists to do our bidding. Stricklin's board reader needs to see this.

I always operated on the assumption that if it wasn't a UPI, AP or BCS it was not a championship. All these National Geographic type of NC are just jokes. Created by magazine some credability. But the Six Pack Speak NC counts.
