Anyone old enough to remember this from 1987?
Synopsis: Pennsylvania State Treasurer, R. Budd Dwyer was convicted of taking bribes, and looked as though he might spend the rest of his life in jail. A day or so before sentencing he calls a press conference where the general consensus was the man would resign. However, he reads a lengthy statement maintaining his innocence, warns anyone who might not be able to handle it to leave the room, then pulls a gun, sticks it in his mouth and pulls the trigger in front of reporters, and their cameras.
What I can't get over is the fact several news stations actually aired the guy committing suicide, completely unedited with no warning to viewers. When I first read about this it talked about how a bad snow storm had hit Pennsylvania and thousands upon thousands of kids were out of school and saw the video during the noon news. I would be PISSED if I were a parent. The footage is actually is still on YouTube, but I'm not going to link it. Feel free to do a search if you're so inclined. I saw it a few years ago, and I can say it is truly disturbing, and this is coming from a Murse who has worked plenty of codes, traumas, and suicides.
The worst part is after the fact the key witness in the case against him recanted and admitted to lying under oath in an effort to get a shorter sentence.
I wasnt very old at the time, but when I first heard of this a few years ago, I couldn't believe how I had no recollection of it. It's almost as if time forgot the whole thing. If a similar scenario played out today I could NOT imagine how it would be with our 24 hour news cycle. I would assume a significant amount of people would be desensitized to it.
But does anyone actually remember this? It's just one of the most screwed up things I could imagine.
