KyJeff and I were just talking about Hank Gathers the other day.

That was very damn similar
It was.....

Violent shot to his chest. Which if done hard enough, and/or in between beats, can send the heart into a bad rhythm...

Worse thing is a possible laceration(to the heart).

Very sad.

Haven't heard anything on Damar yet, but they called the game off, that's not a good sign.
I left the room when the play happened, so I didn’t see it and I don't want to see it.
I'll never forget seeing Hank fall to the floor, that clip is burned into my mind. Scary as hell.

Sure sounds like a hit that caused some sort of heart or respiratory issue.

Life is Fragile.

Hope he recovers from this and this makes me think of all the times, coaches wanted me to play football in high school. I declined. I thought I would end up hurt.

No one wants to have a life threatening event happen in sports but every now and then it can happen in any sport.

When I saw all the players crying, and the announcers saying he was getting CPR on the field, I assumed he was dead. Last word is critical condition.

Yea it basically has to happen at a certain time to coincide with the impact. At least thats howt the Dr's tweet I read made it sound like.
Its usually something that happens to young kids/teenagers. But yes, if you receive a violent blo to the chest during a cardiac cycle; which only last about 1-second. Which is why its so rare.

University of Cincinnati is a damn good hospital. He's is great hands. This could be an instance of commotio cordis, but Im not a Dr.
It's kind of strange how this hospital gets so many of these NFL injuries that require a trauma center. The Ryan Shazier injury, the Tua concussion earlier this year, and now this.

Thank goodness for those AED machines
Technology is amazing....Survival rate for commotio cordis was zero.......then 34%---And now with AED's available, its around 60%.

Its crazy what can be done. I have someting called a "loop recorder" that is inserted over the top of my heart. Constantly records. If I had not had this in, they never would have picked up PSVT's I was having---thus not being able to do surgery to fix it.

That's actually how I knew what it was when I saw that tweet. When I was 16 I was umpiring a baseball game and the batter hit a line drive, an absolute rocket, to the 3rd basemen(who was 10 or 11) and it hit the kid square in the chest. Now, he didn't have anything close to this, but he was out for about 10-15 seconds.

Probably the scariest thing Ive ever witnessed in person at a sporting event.

When I saw the replay, it was first thing I said to my wife. I have educated myself with the heart over the years, due to my own rhythm issues.

Very sad and scary to say the least. Now being reported that the NFL didn’t cancel the game. It was the bills and bengal players saying they wouldn’t be playing.

And just like clockwork the lunatics in the political forum are suggesting it’s because of a Covid booster…

I read it was Bengals Head Coach Zac Taylor who went over to the Bills about not continuing. Bills players were actually headed back on to the field.

My youngest daughter had a pulmonary embolism on the soccer field and collapsed. Revived by herself and drove home. The next morning after urging from Momma and me, talked her into a trip to the er room. She drove there and spent a week getting the clot
dissolved with blood thinners and was then ok. Thank the Lord and a lot of prayers. I will be praying for this player..Hope he recovers fully.

Have to wonder if it had anything to do with trauma or was more like the Hank Gaithers fatal arrhythmia which had nothing to do with trauma. Instead it was Hypertrophic Cardiac Myopathy which is an enlargement of the heart muscle which can lead to irregular and potentially fatal heart arrhythmias.

I would guess that they detected an irregular arrythmia after initial assessment in an unconscious player and an AED was used to regain a regular heart beat and then he was given oxygen via a face mask on the field by paramedics... but the question is how long was he without oxygen and was there any brain damage and if so how significant. It seemed that he had prompt and outstanding medical care on the field .

It might be significant that they (supposedly) sedated him to keep him from fighting the placement of an endotracheal tube and placement on a ventilator . So now they will wait until the sedation wears off in 8-12 hours to determine next steps .

People die every single day. Oh okay, because it hit the elite of the elite we’re supposed to pretend it’s an incredible event. I hope he’s okay just like I hope everyone who’s experiencing trauma is okay. I never see ESPN care when it’s someone I’ve been mentoring in trauma and therapy, they push nothing but political “us vs. them” everyday and they want everyone to care when the freakish of the freak happens to the elite 1%, yea okay.

I’ve been to 3 funerals since 2018 of kids in the city of Memphis who overdosed and were killed by bullets and I never heard the first word of anyone from ESPN who gave a damn. They just push political propaganda end to end which hurts so many that I work with. It’s propaganda that hurts the clients I work with daily.

But now, because it’s a rich 1%er athlete they care.

Sorry, I don’t feel the same as many of you. Just because the TV props it up I don’t feel the same. Kids are dying everyday because nobody gives a **** until it hits your team and your preferred colors. I’m sorry but this hit me hard. Cry for everyone dealing with death, spare me the rarity that had enough in bank to handle it when tragedy happens.

This isn’t about the player. It’s about everyone at that network who pushes this nonsense for political gain.

I’ve got an appointment with a poor mother from Ripley Tennessee who just saw her son get gunned down in their driveway a while back, she meets with me at 12:30 today. Who are you crying for?

Having said that, I pray for his recovery. But people supporting the same people espn supports need perspective. They’re the problem. And I don’t feel sorry for Ryan Clark. He’s a 1%er coward in a suit that is detrimental the to cause I serve. F*** espn and the ******** they serve up which I feel is killing my clients constantly.

Aaaaaand, there it is. The nutty, rambling rant I was expecting.

Crazy how one second you are a healthy 24 year old NFL player, the next you are fighting for you life.

Definitely makes me consider how fast it can be over, especially for someone like me who is far from being in top physical condition. Appreciate every second we are blessed with, we just never know when that time is coming.

What's the story with Ryan Clark ?
Having said that the way he collapsed it was if you could see his soul leaving his body . I 100% thought the young man was dead , more than likely that occurs anywhere other than a spot where outstanding medical personnel are present he is a goner .

Yeah I've been touched by. similar story , local very successful insurance co. owner ,and good friend , his son as a college freshman collapses and dies while playing tennis . The stress of playing tennis exposed a congenital abnormality . Always be prepared to meet your maker .

Also , now that I flipped over to my FB feed I can kinda see where Grom is coming from .. my FB is loaded with people praying for this player .. which is called for 100% , by all means , I'm thrilled this young man actually might survive an event that usually ends up being fatal . But where are my fellow prayer warriors praying for the poor people, in say Chicago or Philly, who are getting murdered by the 1000s ? Is ESPN concerned about the young Afro-Ameicans being slaughtered there ? Do you ever hear a second about it on ESPN ? This isnt a crazy rant , its a call to action to demand a better system , a better country . A call to treat every human life as precious .

It’s not nutty. It’s a dose of reality. Did you know who Damar Hamlin was prior to this incident? No. But dude was raising $2,500 for toys for kids in his community and now the Go Fund Me has over 3 mil. And all these folks gave because it’s an athlete whom they saw collapse over and over again on ESPN and twitter. Grom is right, there are people in your own community suffering and you’re doing jack about it. But keep pretending to give a **** about this dude you never heard of before…
