I got an email about it a couple of days ago and an automated phone call with a message from Dr. Z about it yesterday. It was the first I had ever heard of it too, but their twitter feed looked like it had been around since the fall. Seems like it's just a way to raise some money to lobby for the university.

As 8Dog says, the executive committee members give it legitimacy as well asthe people who give to it as well-- a listing of which can be found by looking at the secretary of state campaign finance reports. It's been around for a little while-- not quite four years it looks like. There aresome representatives who received money from the PAC in '07. They must really be gearing up for the 2011 state elections.

I got a mailer from them asking for donation. Also included a sticker. Probably give a little and put the sticker on my bumper.

It is non-partisan, and will support candidates from both parties who are MSU alums or support MSU. This type of thing is promising because politics is something we have not done well. Hopefully someorganizationand coordination among some pretty influential folks well benefit MSU.

If an alumnus happens to run, and he's an idiot, or someone with completely different political views than I have, then I don't think I'd want to be part of an organization who supports a candidate like that. I'm all for promoting MSU, but there will be occasions when the bulldog is not the best man for the job.

I am on the Executive Committee and I can tell you that Bully Bloc's mission is to make sure Mississippi State has a seat at the tablein Jackson when decisions are made. We can not continue to cede the political power in this state to those who don't have Mississippi State's best interest at heart.

The next governor of Mississippi will appoint 8 of the 12 members of the College Board during his first term and all 12 if elected to a second term. We need to haveinput on who sits in that chair as well asin the House and Senate.

After reading Maroon Eagle's post, I tried surfing around the campaign finance reports at this website and wasn't able to find anything on Bully Bloc. I wasinterested to see who is supporting the Bloc and which candidates it hassupported. Is there some place else thatI should be looking?

...The formal name Mississippi Coalition for Progress appears on the Bully Bloc Facebook page. I googled it, saw links to the reports, and I'm very impressed with the list of contributors. As people have mentioned, it appears that Bully Bloc is gearing up for 2011.
