Buy or Sell: a win this week and MSU should be top 25.

ESPN rankings.

25 is Utah. Assuming they win this week they have wins over unranked UCLA (in the espn bottom 10 this week)and Cal Poly.

24 is Texas Tech. (Rains mud). Assuming they win this week, thats Arkansas pine Bluff and Kent state (also in the ESPN bottom 10 this week).

23 is Indiana. An unimpressive win vs Old Dominion and has Kennesaw State next.

22 Tennessee. Win vs Syracuse and upcoming game vs ETSU.

21 Alabama. Of course thst would be a loss to unranked FSU and game vs LA Monroe.

Now we keep hearing about the polls supposed to be rewarding harder schedules and marquee opponents due to playoff implications.

How do you leave off MSU with a win vs ASU?

Discuss.

Gotta also consider the others receiving votes.

BYU 102, Auburn 94, Georgia Tech 67, USC 64, Louisville 59, TCU 49, Missouri 42, South Florida 25, Tulane 18, Nebraska 13, Kansas State 7, UNLV 4, Liberty 4, James Madison 4, Duke 4, Navy 2, Virginia 2, Baylor 2, Memphis 2, Pittsburgh 2

I'll give you that not many of them would have a win as good as ASU (probably just Auburn, maybe USF), but they would still be candidates to be ranked should the lower part of the poll stumble.

Sell. State’s not going to get any benefit of the doubt after going 2-10 last year.
Even if we blow them out, the narrative is “ASU was a one-year wonder”
Although you are probably dead on correct.. how does the polling explain it? We are all told that scheduling and winning more difficult games is absolutely a net positive. All for the playoff picture.

How do we know the seeding for playoff matchups will be honest and fair if it isn’t honest and fair.

just using this example as a possible scenario down the road for a team that gets screwed because another team gets a benefit of the doubt (or will bring more fans and eyeballs).

I don't know. But if we get to 2-0, we'll get to 4-0. In that scenario, we would definitely be ranked when Tennessee comes to town.

We will get votes but not enough to crack the top 25. We'll slip in at 24 right before Tennessee if we take care of Alcorn and NIU.

To the ops point.

FSU was 2 10 last yr, beat preseaon # 8 at home and get ranked 14th.
If the same standard is applied, we would be 17/18 range. We shall see, don't hold your breath.

Not saying you are wrong…. But why should we buy Indiana, Texas Tech, Utah, or hell…. Alabama right now? Especially in the transfer portal age.
I agree.

ALL of the above teams have concerns.

The Hoosiers have a poor strength of schedule.

Texas Tech & Utah are fighting for a berth from what could be a one-bid conference.

And Alabama would have to be this way when they’re off our schedule….

We beat #8 LSU in 2014 and jumped to #14. I agree with the low teens landing spot. If it's a fluke looking win then we'll be in the 20s.

Yeah. We all know the same standard won’t apply. We’ll see. Or at least I hope we will.

Sell, but it will be a top 25 matchup when Tennessee rolls into town (if they don’t **** the bed too much vs Georgia)

If they get to 4-0 they will be ranked and not because the voters think they are good, it's because the want Tenn beating a ranked team.

Sell. Gonna have to go 4-0 and look decent doing it.....then we break the top 25. My only OOC concerns were AZST and NIU before the season started.

Sell, just don’t think there are enough ranked teams losing this week for it to happen. Would probably get in one of the 2 weeks after. I think we’re legitimately a 25-35 range team but won’t get placed there at end of year because of how hard the schedule is

Sell, w/Alcorn State & Northern Illinois following up, don’t see it happening. We beat TN the week after those, it’s on, we on our way up.

Sell - I can see the argument that State should be in the 21- 25 range with a win over Arizona State, but nobody in the national media is going to give State the benefit of the doubt and rank them after the last two years. You get to Tennessee at 4-0, you're ranked with a win.

I see your point. You could make a case with a win that we had one of the 25 best resumes in the country after 2 weeks.
But the fact is that name recognition/program prestige carries a lot of weight in the rankings. We’re a program that’s going to have to prove it on the field. And that’s OK, because early season rankings are really meaningless. It’s why the poll that matters (committee rankings) doesn’t come out until week 8 or whenever it is.
