...SWAC colleges will beat middle-of-the-road Division II teams, but Delta State is an elite D-II team. And elite D-II teams should beat most SWAC teams.

The SWAC became messed up competitively when they decided not to participate in the football playoffs. The deemphasis of playoffs has led to fewer athletes being interested in playing for the colleges because athletes like to win national titles more than they do conference titles, much less conference divisional titles.1

1I don't have anything on hand to prove what I've said, but it makes sense to me on a psychological basis. But this is right, right?

but the average SWAC team would get killed by an average Div. II team.

And no, the SWAC did not mess up competitively when they dropped out of the I-AA playoffs. Their record in the playoffs was something like 2-30 when they dropped out. And most of the 30 (or so) losses were blowouts.

when people talk about the high attendance thing, it makes us sound like USM. Like we don't ever draw good crowds and so we need to pull a stunt like this. And that's not the case.

At least I don't think it is.

could maybe beat Greenville-Weston. They are hands down the worst football team I have ever seen. Ditto for Weir and East Webster.

It's not the talent that's the problem, it's depth. For what it's worth.

...before the conference schools decided to no longer compete for FCS titles. I believe that lack of participation in the football playoffs has made SWAC schools generally less competitive on the gridiron now than they had been.

I would have put the '84 and '85 Weir teams up aGAINst any team in the state. Even JUCOs.

My senior year, we would have taken on anyone. Probably wouldn't beat some of the elites, but we would've been in the game. (17 Stringer)

The '95 / '96 team as well.

AA - likes having a winning football program to go along with MSU

SWAC schools were relevant- before integration. Black players had no choice. It's sort of similar to the Negro Leagues in baseball in that regard, except I don't see the SWAC dying out. It makes much more sense now to play at a D-I school- you get better exposure, better coaching, better facilities, you play in front of bigger crowds. It's a no brainer. You get paid better. (Beign real) JSU is basically a D-I refugee camp for guys that got kicked off of teams.

They stopped competing in the playoffs because they were getting their brains beat in. They weren't competitive when they were playing in the playoffs. That's not great exposure either. They had bowls, but I don't even know if they play them anymore. Then the SWAC itself is a hodgepodge of have's and have not's.

Bottom line, they just play bad football. I've seen SWAC teams play on TV and in person. They're not disciplined. It's like watching backyard football.

Croom lost to Maine with better players than Mullen inherited. Plus Croom lost because he was a dumbass. I don't expect that from Mullen.
