You would still be a State fan if they somehow left/got kicked out of the SEC.

but if we went to a lesser level, I'd possibly stop buying tickets, and stay home...watch on TV when available.

Say if we went to something like CUSA, I'm done. After being where we have been, that is sports suicide.

This could happen to us, in the not so distant future.

GO DOGS!In today's world, we MUST COMPETE,.... DONATE, and put BUTS in the SEATS!

..100% of the people who post here would stil be MSU fans if MSU joined the Sun Belt tomorrow. (There will be a tiny minority who will swear they'll abandon MSU if MSU leaves the SEC, but they are full of crap).

I don't give a **** what conference MSU is in, as long as MSU is competing in games.

Do you really think conference affiliation is the main ingredient that drives loyalty to Miss. State athletics?

you ask this on a Friday night, on a message board of a team that has no sports going on right now (other than our track team. Good luck, and go dogs!), and finished sub-500 in football, didn't make the big dance in hoops, and didn't even make the conference tournament in the sport "we're good in". The fact that you're getting responses to this at such a time is a testament to our loyalty, and proof of our pure masochism as a fanbase.
I also take a smug sense of satisfaction in making fun of bandwagon fans with no real school attatchment. No conference affiliation will ever take that away from me.

Every year of my life I have loved State, I would miss the natural rivalries in playing every other SEC team though.

I really think that if there was a move to four 16-team super conferences, we would remain in the SEC.

The thought that scares me is what if the superpowers, say 32 of them, decided to form their own national association. Schools like Arkansas, Auburn, Kentucky would be on the borderline of being excluded. We would have no chance at that pie.

I'd say that from the SEC -
Alabama, LSU, Florida, Georgia, Tennessee definitely in a 32-school association
Auburn, Arkansas, Kentucky on borderline
State, Ole Miss, Vandy, USC definitely out

ACC
Virginia Tech, Florida State, Miami, North Carolina, Georgia Tech in
Clemson, Boston College on borderline

Big East
West Virginia in
UConn, Pitt, Syracuse, Cincy on borderline

Big 12
Texas, Texas A&M, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, Nebraska in
Colorado on borderline
everyone else probably out

Big Ten
Michigan, Ohio State, Penn State, Wisconsin, Michigan State, Iowa probably in
Minnesota on borderline
everyone else probably out

Notre Dame in

Pac 10
USC, UCLA, Washington, Oregon, California, Arizona, Arizona State probably in
everyone else probably out

Other candidates - TCU, Utah, BYU
Possibly Boise State or Air Force

So out of Auburn, Arkansas, Kentucky, Minnesota, Clemson, Boston College, Connecticut, Syracuse, Cincy, Pittsburgh, Utah, BYU, TCU, Boise, AFA-
2 get in.

We're not even in the picture.

caring, a league like that would be impotent.

A league must have mass appeal to matter, and if something I wanted to watch was not involved... screw e'm I'd as soon be watching wrestling.

I'm worried about this small of a group....We can already watch pro ball without going thru all of the other stuff.

I went to school at MSU. My family is almost all MSU fans. Winning the SEC on the rare occasion that it happens is sweet, but even it were the Sun Belt, I would definately still be a State fan.

It would definately suck getting kicked out, and it would not be a good thing, but I really don't think it would change how much I went to games or bought season tickets at all.

I love baseball, and I love MSU baseball. I go to some of the games aganist crap opponents anyway. So, that wouldn't change. Also, I love college football, and having been a former member of the Famous Maroon Band, I do enjoy at least seeing them- I know I'm in the minority, but I do like to keep up with what's going on.

I just can't see me all of a sudden saying, "Well, we're toast in the SEC, so I guess I'll go pull for Alabama."

The road trips with vh and megadawgmaniac and avid reader would be a little different since it would be Jonesboro and Monroe as opposed to Tuscaloosa and Baton Rouge.

but as money starts becoming a bigger factor, this scenario is out there. It basically becomes a college version of the NFL.

that a lot of people would not have gone to State if we weren't in the SEC. I honestly probably would not have gone because I had other options for my original major.

I was shooting more for "You would be less of a fan if State was moved to a smaller conference" (i.e. CUSA type). And by less of a fan, less likely to attend the sporting events, donate, etc.

Part of the allure of attending State is SEC sports.

State wouldn't be what it is without being in the SEC. It helps enrollment tremendously.

So a sidebar - would you have attended State if we weren't in the SEC? My dad went to State. We went to football games so my 1st tie to MSU was SEC football. Without it, I don't think I would have such a strong connection. I couldn't see myself attending Tulane (if it wasn't in NOLA).

If we ever got close to this being a real possibility I think we would be given some (hopefully) attainable goals to stay by the conference. At that point I think our alumni and fans would rally around the school like never before, we would meet those goalsand when the dust settled we be stronger than we ever dreamed we could be.A good kick in the *** is the best motivational tool in the world sometimes.
