Not sure how you could ban them completely - free speech and all that. There definitely needs to be a ban on tweeting about team related topics (injuries, game plan, discontent, etc).

You can weed out the malcontents with their own words. Or you can provide an opportunity for attitude adjustment with extra running, etc. Of course, the coach's already know which ones are the biggest dubasses, but this lets a knothead hang himself.

Since scholarships are one year at a time, it would be a good way to open up some space.

As a coach you can really see how they feel and know who to run off. Those dingle bells are too stupid to know that what they tweetbecome public knowledge. I know dumb ***'s who fail to understand that when they post on Face book.

Certainly this is done already, but I would definitely have a course for all student athletes that explains the downsides of online social networking. I would also explain that your *** can and will be kicked off the team for what you advertise to the public on the internet should it be deemed inappropriate (side conversation - is this legal? I'm thinking if I bitched about my job via twitter/facebook - I could face repercussions - not completely sure though). I would make it very vague as to what inappropriate is. Make it clear that it's in the player's best interest just to skip out on the whole twittering thing to be on the safe side. If it's that important to them, they can still do the network thing, just via private channels.

I would do just the opposite. Make it very clear that you don't tweet, put on Facebook, etc. ANYTHING that has to do with the team or recruiting.

There's a reason most of the student athletes are not presented to the press.

Other schools have done it and we should too.

Too many ways for the players and fans (or disguised fans) to abuse it. It's better to avoid the situation altogether. No twitter.

the university is a state actor.

But at this point, it should have been banned. If someone wants to later say it violates free speech then so be it. Cross that bridge when you get there.

and let them know that the athletic dept has final say on Tweets and the moment they tweet anything inappropriate to the team or university, they lose their scholorship and possibly they will be expelled from MSU.

Then you burn one or two and the rest will understand, unless they really are dumb as dirt, and then you throw them off when they screw up.

That kind of course needs to be mandatory for all high school seniors and college students. "Hey fool, here's how you could destroy your future in five easy clicks."

I would have thought it's a free speech issue - but if other programs are doing it, maybe it's not? I really don't know...

Seeing a bunch of dumbasses "tweet" their deep & stirring thoughts to the whole world is the highest level of embarrassment obtainable.

Nothing good is about to come out of this situation. Not only will it cause problems with this years team, but it could bleed over into recruiting too.

Just wait until the media gets their hands on this. Poor Renardo Sidney was picked on by the NCAA and now the ungrateful MSU fans are turning on him. I'm sure we'll be labeled a bunch of redneck racist hicks as usual while the school is being bashed in the media.

Yes I see the comical aspect of it, but it's not worth it to me.

He either developed a little common sense in the last hour or two or we might be seeing the birth of a new MSU policy...

Since the CL writers use it to create stories. Also since the players are representatives of the University, whether they want to be or not, then the University should ban the use by scholarship athletes. Also, since any psycho fans from any school could impersonate the player or MSU fan and provoke responses.

There are many perks to being an athlete. There are a few disadvantages. If I get a free trip to the Bahamas and Hawaii, I would give up facebook and twitter no problem.
