If the following Buy/Sell was posted back in 2003, EVEN Coach34 would have answered "Sell" if the question had been, "Buy or sell: Butler will make it to the National Championship Game before Rick Stansbury and/or Mississippi State makes it to the Sweet 16."

I still maintain my support of Rick Stansbury, but this is still just hard to fathom. And I'm selling my buy/sell.

Edited: Changed my buy to sell because i got all turned around and didn't say what i meant.

I would have said every SEC team would have made it to the Sweet 16 before Butler made the national championship game.

This was a special year. The door was open for a team to make a run. Butler did it. Hell, Duke was arguably the worse 1 seed in 10 years.

but that wasn't a bad team. I'll rephrase -

Duke is one of the worst 1 seeds in 10 years

#3 RPI against the #8 schedule, winning both the conference and the conference title and then justified the seeding by making it to the final game. I know there's a lot of Duke haters, but to say TODAY that they were a terrible one seed makes you look bitter or dumb or both.

Just because they got to the title game doesn't mean they deserved their seeding or their bracket. They were even rated above Syracuse (which could be due to the injury to their center) . They got Kansas' draw (how does the third-best #1 seed get the easiest bracket?). They had the weakest #2 and the weakest #4 in their region.

It was a fortunate bracket. But they've ended the argument of whether they deserved the 1 seed in
resounding fashion by winning. Kansas lost to a 9, UK lost to a 2 that Duke beat six days later, and Syracuse lost to a 5 that Duke plays tonight. Had Duke been a two in another region, the only of those 1 seeds who they could have played was UK because the other two went out before that. Had WVU been a 1 and Duke a 2 in the same region, I think the outcome would have been the same then as it was Saturday. They're just playing very good basketball right now and have a very good chance to win it all.

But that doesn't mean they weren't bad for a #1 seed.I don't know that I'd call them a bad #1 seed, but this year was pretty craptastic as far as NCAA basketball went. There just weren't a lot of good teams and no great teams. And lots of marginal teams were getting pretty decent seeds.

It doesn't surprise me that much to see teams like Butler and Duke playing for the championship, b/c when the talent is down, it makes sense for the better coached teams to make it through.

That isn't why they are in the final game.

If you hate Duke because they go to class and don't have a bunch of street agents, runners and hangers-on around them, then fine. But don't credit their success on an easy draw. They won the games they had to win. Syracuse, UK, and Kansas didn't.

I'mcertain Duke is better than the team that knocked UK out after that *** kicking they put on WV on Saturday and we'll find out how they match up against Butler tonight. The only real unknown at the end of the day is how would they stack up against Northern Iowa. My opinion is they would beat them like a rented mule.
