...Petersen was never offered the job. (even an informal offer, or conveyed through Neinas).

I mean why would we not believe Petersen himself? He said Byrne called, asked if he was happy, Petersen said yes, Byrne said ok and asked if he had suggestions....

saw that somewhere.

<font size="2" face="georgia, palatino">Why all the secrecy? "The one thing you don't want to do is embarrass people," Neinas said. "You can embarrass both the institution, if someone decliend to accept the offer, and you can embarrass people if they have an interest but don't obtain the position."</font>

...if all he said was "Hey, you happy in Boise?" and accepted the affirmative while immediately moving to plan B.

Byrne's more tenacious than that... At least I hope he is.

An offer may have been <span style="font-style: italic;">implied</span> but never actually offered.

But sell that there wasn't a coach or two that could have had a job offer if they'd wanted one before Mullen. Not that it matters.

I may be completely off base here, but during the baseball search wasn't Byrne quotes as saying he would never officially offer a job to someone until he knew they would accept? I think it was made clear to Petersen that the job was his if he wanted it and Petersen declined, therefore there might not have been an "official" offer

I think he was offered informally and I think he got cold feet because of his family.

There was too much smoke for there not to be a fire.

we were prepared to pay a certain amount of money, and then asked him if he would like to be considered for the job....yet no offer was actually made. Like Clinton said: "I did not have sex with that woman."

That's why those search firms are so important with the message board age.

The one thing he forgot to mention is not embarassing the guy that you actually do hire if he wasn't the first choice. By using a search firm, Byrne was able to only have to make one offer. Mullen was most likely not the first choice, but no one can know for sure.

Hypothetically, if the search had been completely public and Byrne offered the job to Petersen, Patterson, Kelly, Wilson, Gill, the towel boy, Smurfette, etc. and then offered it to Mullen, Mullen would be less likely to want the job knowing that everyone would see him as a fall back plan. Using the search firm saves face on that front as well.

That said, I'd be curious to know if Byrne or the search firm put out any feelers for Tuberville. I would've wanted him to be the top guy on my list if I was a State fan, and I'm curious if he was even considered since he didn't fit Byrne's ideal candidate (young, offensive minded).

It would take an idiot to just throw out 2.5 million. IF that figure got out publicly then you could end up overpaying and geting stuck with an unqualified moron with a cajun accent and a proclivity for stripping off his clothes in team meetings. I've seen it happen.

I guess the truth hurts....

The Rebel fans seem to have a short memory when it comes to coaches.
Ran off Cut, had to settle for the Orge and now they have re-tread Nutts...

That would have been the worst idea for State to hire Tubs...having to live with rebels saying hope you enjoy our left-overs...I sure that's exactly what rebels wanted to hear...I am not sure about the Petersen offer but I do think he would have taken the job if there wasn't family issues involved...but for State fans in general its better to be happy with what we got than to sit and wonder what could have been...
