That's why those search firms are so important with the message board age.
The one thing he forgot to mention is not embarassing the guy that you actually do hire if he wasn't the first choice. By using a search firm, Byrne was able to only have to make one offer. Mullen was most likely not the first choice, but no one can know for sure.
Hypothetically, if the search had been completely public and Byrne offered the job to Petersen, Patterson, Kelly, Wilson, Gill, the towel boy, Smurfette, etc. and then offered it to Mullen, Mullen would be less likely to want the job knowing that everyone would see him as a fall back plan. Using the search firm saves face on that front as well.
That said, I'd be curious to know if Byrne or the search firm put out any feelers for Tuberville. I would've wanted him to be the top guy on my list if I was a State fan, and I'm curious if he was even considered since he didn't fit Byrne's ideal candidate (young, offensive minded).
