The other games that weekend are UT/Bama and LSU/Auburn. I think it will depend on the records of the teams in those other games.

Unless the records are both good and it's an attractive match up that way. I just don't think it'll be that big of a story for TV to pick it up just for that reason. You would've thought Nutt's return to Fayetteville would've been attractive to TV, especially with all the drama involved in that story, but we ended up on PPV for that game.

Plus, SEC coaching incest stories are really old news these days with all the coach swapping that's been going on.

just compare Nutt going back to Fayetteville with a 2 time BCS champion playing against his former 2 time BCS champion Offensive Coordinator? Really? Really?

You're right. Nutt going back to Fayetteville would've been a more interesting story, because more people actually knew the story there and there was a lot of animosity there with the 2 year soap opera that had occurred. There is no animosity between Florida and Mullen. For an example, I don't remember hearing much of anything about Mike Leach facing OU for the first time as Texas Tech head coach.

Anyway, my point is that I don't see that Mullen coaching against the team where he was coordinator would be a big enough story to trump any games that actually involve better overall match ups. For that matter, Malzahn at Auburn facing off against Nutt would probably get more publicity simply because of the story.

everyone thought arkansas and ole miss sucked *** at that point. cbs loves having a national championship contender on. that's the biggest reason it's a strong possibility. the muller v. meyer matchup gives the announcers something to talk about.

Exactly my point. The TV networks care a lot more about the match up and the teams involved than they do about the side stories. Florida being a national title contender will be a much bigger factor in what station broadcasts the UF/MSU game than the Mullen story line. That's why I used the Nutt/Arkansas example. If the networks cared so much about an outside story line, that was as good of a coaching side story as they could have, and still all the networks passed on the game, leaving it for PPV only.

So, if the game is on CBS, it'll be because CBS thinks it's the best match up of the day, not because of the Mullen vs. his old team side story.

The reason Nutt's return to Fayetteville didn't garner much attention is because he left the Arkansas program in such shambles, it wasn't an attractive matchup for TV.

Most people don't even know about Mullen/UF. I think I heard it mentioned once during the NC game.

The ones that do will have forgotten by the time Lil 3-4 Mi Tippy Tate plays the mighty 7-0 Gators.

there's just NO WAY state plays on national tv.

Please, there's several storylines to where the press could eat it up:

-Tim Tebow (obvious)
-Florida not winning in Starkville for over 20 years (last 3 games at home State has won)
-Mullen/Meyer connection

I'm sure there's others.

would a mediocre coach going back to the last place he coached be more wanted by a major network than a 2 time national championship coach playing against his former Offensive Coordinator. Do you really think anyone outside of Mississippi and Arkansas give a rat's *** about Houston Nutt?

Sell.. There is no way Bama and UT will take a backseat to MSU/UF. Outside of MSU noone really knows about Dan Mullen and outside of the SEC West not to many people care about MSU. Bama and UT are two of the biggest fanbases in the country and they will be the hot ticket game that weekend. If CBS still picks first which i believe they do than they will pick that game. They do everytime those 2 teams play. Until we get to that point where we have been good enough long enough they will not put us back on.

Also playing on that day are UTK @ BAMA, ARK @ UM, and AUB @ LSU. All of these games will have the same sort of compelling interest as the MSU game. As I understand the new agreement, they can make their decision as soon or as late as possible. Somehow I see CBS making the national game either LSU or BAMA, with both the MSU and OM games catching on ESPN.

From a national perspective, there really isn't that much interest in Mullen vs. Florida any more than you guys are all excited about Sarkisian vs. USC. I think when CBS selects for the National Game on that day, they will pick the one that will draw the biggest national audience. If either Ole Miss or MSU is on a roll, one of us might get it, but I would really put my money on UTK vs. Bama.

3-7 Ole Miss was on CBS in 2007 playing LSU. It's all about the number one team in the land.</p>

Say what you will, but the coaching storyline will be a very small factor in the decision of which network picks up your game. The networks care a whole lot more about getting the most attractive game and the most attractive teams than they do about a storyline

If I remember, Tuberville facing off against Ole Miss warranted a Jefferson Pilot broadcast the next year at Auburn because neither team was all that great. Saban facing LSU drew a lot of pub the last two years, but that's because it was Saban, and also because both teams had good records when they faced off the last two years.

For the record, I really don't think Steve Sarkisian facing USC will get a lot of attention from the networks either, and that's essentially the same situation. If they give that game a lot of attention it'll be because Washington is actually winning some games and USC is winning as expected.

Yep, which is the point most have been making, that it's all about the teams involved or at least the team involved. Just because you're playing Florida, who should be No. 1, the game will at worst draw an ESPN spot, but I don't think the Mullen storyline will make a big difference in which spot it gets. The match up itself will dictate that.

And for everything wrong with that post above, the one thing he was right about is that I think I only heard Mullen to MSU mentioned once during the national title game. It's just not that big of a storyline. For that matter, the coordinator that I saw the most during the game was actually OU's defensive coordinator. The others were rarely shown or mentioned.

CBS chooses games based primarily on the expected number of viewers.

Florida has an enormous fan base.

Its a road game, so most Florida fans will have to watch it on TV. Remember in the late 90's, 70% or so of UF fans would choose watching UF football over sex.

Florida has two national championships in the last three years

Florida has the rockstar QB Tim Tebow - the first sophomore (a true sophomore at that) to ever win the Heisman. Runner up in 2008, he'll be in NYC again in the final three. The media salivates over the possibility of having Tebow in a broadcast.

Three ranked (two in the top 10) Florida teams came to Starkville and lost. Spurrier twice, Zook once and Zook got croomed. This implies some sort of mojo in Starkville, the press will eat it up.

After all of that, there's the whole Dan Mullen was the OC at Florida and has been with Meyer for a long time. The grasshopper faces the master.

There's a national top 20 freshman recruiting class coming in to Starkville, and the media will give Croom a lot of love for starting it, and for Mullen finishing it.

There is unprecedented optimisim and interest about MSU football. Never has anyone that has coached at State been held in such high regard in the SEC or nationally since some guy named Darrel Royal.
