I think he'll come back next year, but with his numbers as of today:

</p><table class="stats_table expandable" id="1281718463678" cellspacing="0" sizcache="3198" sizset="0"><tfoot sizcache="3198" sizset="0"><tr tabindex="0" index="0"><td class="dg-avg" index="16">306</td><td class="dg-obp" index="17">.405</td><td class="dg-slg" index="18">.536</td></tr></tfoot><tbody></tbody></table>
436 HR

does he get in? I say, based on the MVP, switch-hitter, 3B, one-team, no steroids, numbers depressed due to injuries......blah, blah, the intangibles get him in on 2nd or so ballot, despite not reaching 500HR

One of the best all around at his position. Never put up flashy numbers except his batting title a few ago, but was always a clutch guy and did it when the Braves were at their peak. Definite Hall of Fame.

I think he is a first ballot HOF player. Look at the other third basemen in the Hall of Fame. The only guys in there that played third with more home runs are Mike Schmidt, the best third baseman of all time, and Eddie Matthews. His numbers are way better than Ron Santo, the poster boy for "should be in the HOF".

I can't really think of a knock against him really, but I'm sure that the voters will find one- they always do. They'll probably say he wasn't that great defensively, but he wasn't a bad defesive player either though.

then something's wrong. Cause there's no doubt he's a HOF player.</p>

Texas isa possibility, so he could be out near his ranch. but otherwise, i don't think he'd want to be away from his family just to extend his career as a DH.

that says there's no way he doesn't get in on the first ballot. .306 career hitter and a .941 career OPS. If you're a numbers geek, scroll down to the "Hall of Fame" and "Similarity Scores" on Baseball Ref: http://www.baseball-refer...layers/j/jonesch06.shtml

Especially given that he's never been linked to PEDs when his career overlapped the entire era, he ought to have a pretty easy ticket to Cooperstown.

I'm still hoping he comes back to ATL next year, and I hope that Freddie Freeman's presence at 1B doesn't deter that. From his comments in the past, I don't think he'd want to come back and play 1B anyway, but if he wanted to, I'm not sure how the Braves would handle it - especially given the way they told Tom Glavine to hit the trails after completing months of rehab when Hanson was ready.

and all amassed their numbers while playing easier positions in the field. I didn't claim I was being objective, but there are 5 current HoFers on the similar batters list as well.

But you're right about the other players playing positions where you'd better produce offensively because you don't have to defensively. Plus Walker played most of his career in Colorado, which is probably worth at least 10 points on the batting average and 10 RBIs.

To me, itsmore impressive that Chipper was a switch hitter thanhe played 3rd...in comparison to the others that have been mentioned.

Walker is the only one of those three, for example, to hit > .300 against both LHP and RHP, and he doesn't even have 400 HRs.

he's widely known and talked about as one of the best hitters in baseball.

"In 2009 he was named #10 on the Sporting News' list of the 50 greatest current players in baseball. A panel of 100 baseball people, many of them members of the Baseball Hall of Fame and winners of major baseball awards, were polled to arrive at the list." <- that's first ballot type stuff.. in 2009, no less.

Not so sure about Sheffield. And I say Chipper is in. If he's not a switch hitter, it might be tougher, but that alone helps him a lot. And the fact that the Hall of Fame voters are probably going to be tough on the PED guys helps him too since he's apparently done things the right way. I don't know if any of these guys are first ballot inductees, but they could all get in.

I looked at baseball reference after I posted that and was pretty amazed that his numbers weren't a lot worse. It seems like every time he ever came up in a big spot in the NLCS or WS, he choked. I also recall quite a few Roger Dorn moments at third during the postseason.

there is no question...first ballot Hall of Famer. Other than the players that have transitioned to 3rd (Ripken and Afraud), he is the best 3rd basemen I have seen in my lifetime behind Boggs.

Rolen made 6 too, right in the middle of Chipper's drought, and Lowell and Aramis R were there a few times each. I know he was in the OF for a couple of years, but I would have thought more than six All Star Games.

D@A's vote is yes, but it won't shock me to see him fall to second ballot.

there were some years where he probably deserved it, and got the shaft because of the Braves already having a lot of guys on the team and there were some individual years where a guy like Scott Rolen had maybe a better year that particular year.
