I understand the desire to lock up a guy who is expected to be the next big thing, but I think it starts to cause problems when the waiting peroid begins to drag on. If the team is winning it is one thing, but otherwise the coach-in-waiting becomes part of the problem.

But would likely sell if it were ever done the right way. Coaches in waiting should be for a max of 3 years. If FSU was still on top of its game, no one would be questioning their decision. Jimbo would be given the reigns, no questions asked. But when they struggle, many will question his ability as well as the head coach. The problem is that the only schools that will do this are going to have coaches such as Bowden who have been there for years and have had success for most of the tenure. They are never going ot step down as long as they are still winning, so when they finally start losing, the coach in waiting has gone down in the sinking ship as well.

Didnt Muschamp get named coach in waiting at Texas? It may be years before Mack Brown steps down.

Fisher may never get a chance to prove himself. On Finebaum's show today I actually heard Malzahn's name mentioned to replace Bowden bypassing Fisher.

See Ron Polk and Tommy Raffo. Although Pat McMahon worked out OK, he still wasn't going to win a NC or anything like that.

Same for football, though, to.

Let me put it this way- I'm glad that we're not FSU with Jimbo Fisher waiting in the wings, who still has no official HC experience.

But McMahon was. That turned out OK for us, but in general I think it's a very bad idea unless there's a set time for the current coach to retire and the new coach to take over. And even then, that date needs to be only 1-2 years in the future. And yeah, I think FSU screwed up in this whole deal. They could find a better coach than Jimbo Fisher if they weren't tied in to this deal.

The screw up level here (i live in tally) is unmatched. FSU has FOUR coaches with the word "head coach" in their titles. Head Coach Bobby Bowden; Assistant Head Coach Mickey Andrew; Executive Head Coach Chuck Amatto; and Head Coach in Wating Jimbo Fischer. Can you say, two many chiefs and not enough indians?
It has worked or seems to be working at Oregon and UK to name two, and may work at Texas (though there it is a head coach in indefinite waiting).

if you're FSU, would you rather have Jimbo Fisher or Jon Gruden as your head coach? Or any of the other proven HC out there that would jump at a chance to go to FSU with their facilities, resources and tradition?

Oops.
