The first part of that article and the last couple of paragraphs are why it shouldn't be played. The playing of the anthem is basically a short political rally. While most people agree with the politics of the rally, some don't and others are completely indifferent, and they should be able to enjoy the sporting event (which has nothing to do with the preceding rally) like everyone else without being ostracized for their political beliefs or lack of conviction. Having national pride is great, but it doesn't have anything to do with sports.

A few years ago some people on this message board had some beef with Gregg Byrne because he did not reverently salute during the national anthem. Who cares? People go football games to watch football not to display their strong sense of nationalism.

When the anthem is played at MSU games I sit quietly so those around me can enjoy the moment if they please, but I don't get anything out of it. I ask that they return the favor and allow me to not participate.

I mean, obviously you'd prefer she get the lyrics right, but she made a mistake. I don't believe for a second she didn't actually know the lyrics. She just screwed up. It happens.<div>
</div><div>Now, that aside, I thought her rendition of the anthem was turrble. I don't necessarily think that it's "disrespectful" to try to put one's own spin on it, but how many performers in the past have actually done that and had it NOT sound like ****? I can't think of one. Christina's version was particularly ******, and would've been even if she hadn't made the mistake with the lyrics.</div>

The NFL needs to hire the guy who did the Bears Packers game. A professional Barratone singer will never screw it up. Plus after he sang it I just wanted to go kick some ***.

You're a piece of **** if you don't stand and salute during the national anthem.

that still thinks Reagan was a conservative and is just peachy with republican-branded socialism such as TARP, Bush Bailouts, BushCare (the prescription drug boost to medicare) but I would like to ask you a question:

What's the difference in placing your hand over your heart and reciting a pledge or a song versus holding your arm at a 45* angle and shouting "Sieg heil"?

They serve the same purpose. Makes no difference rather it is Hitler, Castro, Kim Jong Il, George W. Bush or Barack Obama. Pick any government and you will find salutes and praises.

I happen to think that anyone that gets all moist and teary-eyed during the star spangled banner is full of piss and Americana.

Anti state. Anti war. Pro market.

..putting your hand over your heart and saying the Pledge of Allegiance to seig heil or saluting the other ruthless dictators you listed?

How 17'ing stupid are you?

I'll quickly explain the difference... In the first case you're paying honor to the country our forefathers came together to create. In the latter... you're doing it to avoid being hung with a noose fashioned from piano wire.
