Since all the Texas schools like to play politics and stay in a conference together, why don't they make their own Lone Star Conference. They would have Texas, aTm, Tx Tech, Houston, Rice, TCU, Baylor, SMU. If they wanted to field 12 they could add in Oklahoma, Ok State, Kansas, K State or New Mexico and New Mexico State.

Side Note: CBSC is playing all their SEC footballgames from this past season. Channel 613 on Direct TV.

They had the Southwestern Conference...everybody in Texas + Arkansas...
Finally failed... not enough widespread appeal!

Nobody wants to watch only Texas teams.

Texas has population of roughly 23 million people. The SEC has approximately 58mil within it's footprint.

If you're selling media rights (TV money), who's going to have a better basic foundation to negotiate?

1) What advantage does Texas gain going to the Pac-10?

2) How does Baylor have so much pull in Texas?

3) How or why would Baylor edge out Colorado?

4) Even if two teams do leave the Big XII, why would they not just try and add two teams in rather than just dissolve?

5) If Texas did this, yes it would be going old school, butthey would have a cake walk to the BCS.

1) Texas is used to getting a larger % of the conference split, and political control. They won't get that in the SEC, and probably not in the Big 10.

2) That's a fine question. It made more sense when Ann Richards was governor, but she's deader than soccer. I think it's the State's way of trying to get what they want.

3) The only answer to that would be academics. Waco makes College Station look like a nice town. I mean they have a solid baseball program, and middle of the road programs elsewhere. Not much different than Colorado, actually.

4) Depends on which two teams. If Texas leaves, the Big 12 will become a ****** Big East, no matter who they add. Even with Nebraska getting better, it's still Texas and Oklahoma that gives the conference a reason for existing.

5) As opposed to now? They play one game a year as it is. How would this be any different for them?

Just to nit-pick...

2) Baylor still has some strong representation in the Texas Legislature. No one is going to "force" UT, A&M, and Tech to bring Baylor along, but they can make things much easier on those schools if Baylor is included.

3) Actually, Colorado is stronger academically than Baylor. Colorado is an AAU member, and is usually ranked just ahead of Baylor in the US News ranking of colleges. Colorado is at least twice the size of Baylor, and undoubtedly has way more "sidewalk alums." I cannot see any reason the Pac 10 would WANT Baylor over Colorado, but if its the only way to get a deal done perhaps they will make the swap.

4) The Big 12 North is already a financial drain on that conference. If Nebraska and Mizzou leave, then the that whole division becomes worthless.

1) What advantage does Texas gain going to the Pac-10? The Pac-10 tv contract comes up for renewal next year, and they claim a better "academic fit". Plus they can practically dictate who comes with them. The only downside is they wouldn't be allowed to persue their own TV network.

2) How does Baylor have so much pull in Texas? Apparently, enough to bump Colorado if the Pac10 is serious about Texas.

3) How or why would Baylor edge out Colorado? The Pac10 loses Denver, but is guaranteed practically every eyeball in Texas.

4) Even if two teams do leave the Big XII, why would they not just try and add two teams in rather than just dissolve? They all know the raiding of the conference wouldn't stop with two. It's better to be proactive now. UT really doesn't want the conference to fold, hence the ultimatum to Nebraska and Missouri. It's posturing, mostly. All conferences seem to be content with the status quo except the Big10.

5) If Texas did this, yes it would be going old school, butthey would have a cake walk to the BCS. True, but would the bid be automatic? Would the conference be strong enough to merit an at-large?

Not to nit pick your non-nit-picking:

Never said they had zero representation in the State Legislature, just that it pales in comparison to the amount of people that went to Texas and A&M. And the governor here seems to have a great deal of influence, going all the way back to at least Bill Clements' first term. Prime example of why Baylor got into the Big 12.

I didn't mean to imply Colorado's academics weren't sufficient, but Baylor's is at the very least on par if not surpassing Colorado's graduate programs. And I forgot that "sidewalk alumni" contributed to academics. Alabama and LSU are the new Harvard and Yale, I guess.

I also never mentioned the Big 12 North as a whole. I assumed it was common knowledge that that division was worthless.

My post was not directly addressed to you, but the answers to the questions. The "sidewalk alums" are part of the fan base, which makes a school attractive - my point was that Colorado is so much more desirable than Baylor from a financial standpoint, that it outweighs any perceived academic advantage Baylor may provide (which I still maintain Colorado wins anyway).

And with respect to the Big 12 North, the question was if 2 teams leave, why don't they just replace them. The 2 teams thinking of leaving right now are Nebraska and Mizzou.

Isn't there a country music group called Lone Star? If so it would be copy right infringement.
