Buy/Sell: Manny Diaz should replace Mullen if he leaves?

For a young Coach like Diaz, his next step up would be to become the HC of a program similar to ours or maybe a little lower. Why not just promote the man to the HC position so he can keep his defense staff and players.Keeping the same staff around whether through promotion or retention is areally big part of success.
If we can keep most of this staff over the next 3 years through in house promotions or them just not getting taken from us, we could be really good. Having guys in your program that play in the same system for 3 or 4 years pays off huge.

I don't think Mullen is going to leave, but if he does, I think we should go after Mike Leach. I listen to him everyday on XM. I heard him talking about us yesterday. He's campaigning for a job, but he spoke in glowing terms of the school, JWS, and Coach Mullen. I think his experience at TTech translates well to our program, and I know that our offense at the least wouldn't suffer, and would probably flourish under his coaching. Now, any players with migraine problems may not want him, but I think he's the best choice.
I wish Mullen would stay at State for 4 years, then I would feel great about hiring Hud or Manny. Right now it would just seem more of a chance move.

I dont worry that we will be able to find a good replacement, but I dont like having to completely change the staff and program again after just 2 years. You just have to weigh that against what Manny or Hud would give you as HC. Will they provide that stability and keep us on course? And there really isn't anyone out there I am crazy about. Leach is an interesting option and would no doubt be successful, but for some odd reason I am really apprehensive about making that hire. Outside of Leach, there really isn't a sexy pick out there. Maybe Sumlin? But if you are going to hire Sumlin, might as well go ahead and hire Leach. Just think about it, what other coordinators in the SEC/ACC/Big 12 would you be interested in? Really only a handful. Venables/Wilson/Muschamp/Malzahn...and maybe a few others? I don't see Patterson/Petersen/Whittingham/Edsall taking this job. Chris Ault? Ehh. <div>

That is the funny thing about it. Manny could be a great hire this year or next, but if he was hired this year it wouldn't come with much fanfare and I think it would make it difficult to hold on to some of our recruits. Give him another year (if he is again successful) and he will really start to gainnotoriety- you want him to at least be a name that other schools are considering for a HC gig, which I don't think he is right now. Then he can sell his rise to prominence to the recruits and to what will be a largely defense-heavy class in 2012 with guys like Channing Ward and Quay Evans. </div><div>

I still thinkBalis is themostimpactful hirewe've made in the last 10 years. The guys on our team look bigger, faster, and stronger than they have since I've been an MSU fan. Some of the guys we have aren't the most talented, but because of Balis they are allplaying to their full potential.
I think prime example number 1 is Fletcher Cox. Scout has him listed at 238 when he signed 2 years ago. He's now listed on the roster at 300 pounds. In 2 years, Balis put 60 poundson himand has him primed to be one of the better DT's in the league next year. That kind of stuff we couldn't do before Balis.

and the more I think about it- Manny as HC, with Hud as OC and Wilson as DC does sound very appealing. Much more so than anybody out there right now we could bring in realistically, except for maybe a RichRod. RichRod has his offense playing good ball, which is the side of the ball he coaches- he just isnt getting the recruits on defense.
