Buy/sell on Florida State and the SEC

Buy/Sell: If Florida State loses tonight, the FSU administration and athletic department finally decides they need to be in the SEC and starts going through the behind-the-scenes channels to make that happen.

This is NOT a buy/sell of whether FSU joins the SEC. The SEC's current #1 expansion priority is adding new tv markets for the SEC Network, and FSU doesn't do that. Plus, Florida would strongly object and Georgia, SC, Kentucky, and Texas A&M wouldn't like the precedent (and supposedly have a handshake deal to all vote down in-state expansion), so FSU would have a lot of hurdles to overcome.

Nonetheless, I'm buying. If Auburn wins, it's probably because they were battle-tested and not intimidated by Florida State's talent. A loss shows Florida State that they can't pound 10 scrubs a year and expect to know how to beat an elite team who has already beaten several elite teams. It's only going to get harder with the playoff

Florida State has elite talent, an elite program, elite fans, etc. But for the best chance at the sustained postseason success they want, they need the annual baptism by fire of the SEC. With a loss tonight, I think their athletic department will finally understand that.

Hard to argue with that.

Hadn't thought of it, but you may be right. Plus, the competition in the ACC is going up a little next year with the addition of Louisville (since Strong is gone, who knows?), and I think Notre Dame is joining in, sorta. So it's possible FSU may not be quite as dominant as they're used to.

The might want to move to the SEC to prove how good they are over a 12-game season. But could be they would prove they couldn't stand the pounding week in and week out

I will sell.

They've won a BCS title without being in the SEC and they are playing for another one tonight without being in the SEC. Moving to the SEC does nothing but make their schedule ridiculously difficult.

Also, another program not in the SEC just took down linchpin Alabama. As much as SEC homers like to think, the conference is not bullet proof.

The conference is definitely not bulletproof. But there are some other factors here:

FSU won their BCS title before the SEC really became the SEC!!!!!!!!!!!!!11!1!!. Power and money was a little more distributed ten years ago than it is now.

Also, FSU is not in a conference where they can have a slip-up and recover to compete for a title. How many one-loss national champions have come from the SEC recently? A few years ago, we had a two loss national champion.

I don't think FSU will ever be pulled into the SEC, but make no mistake....FSU, and dozens of other schools like FSU would kill to be in the SEC. It's not so much about championships, although that's important. The revenue structure and new TV network is such that it's a game changer for everyone in the conference.

This is why I refuse to believe we can't compete at MSU. Our budget isn't as big as some, but we have tons of resources and opportunities to work with.

Yes, I see what you're saying, and definitely agree the SEC has changed a helluva lot since FSU won that 2000 title. Just saying that I don't think a loss to AU would send their leadership lobbying for an SEC invite. And with the playoff shaking things up next year it may not be necessary to go undefeated to have a shot.

It's hard for me to picture making the championship game if they were one of the one-loss teams. I think Alabama would have jumped them, and we would have had Iron Bowl II.

Buy, especially with the playoff.

Pick the four teams if we had a playoff this year. Auburn, FSU, Michigan State, and Bama. Which conference would have received 2 bids?

Next year the situation gets even better for the SEC. Great teams are going to want in since a 1-loss FSU team wouldn't make it over a 1-loss SEC team most years.

Sell. They could just beef up another OOC game and the majority of the time UF will be a good team at the end of the season.
