Buy/Sell: Our game day issues make it harder to recruit.

I have a confession to make. Instead of going to the game, I went to b'ham to go mountain biking. I fully expected us to win but the thought of spending $125 dollars for game day and sitting in the stadium suffering through the stops in play made it an easy decision. If a long suffering MSU fan who has sat in that stadium through some miserable games has these feelings, what do recruits think while sitting there listening to the fans sit in silence while some suicide inducing commercial drones away on the jumbotron? Two years ago, when you walked into the stadium, there was a buzz from beginning to end and things were fun even during a loss. To make matters worse, the kluckers sit up nights trying to figure out angles to recruiting while we make attempts to hinder ours. This is really bothering me obviously.

Sell but the video board has become a hindrance rather than something that can be used to our advantage. They HAVE to figure something out next season.

And FYI, playing the "This Is Our State" commercial, which is a great commercial, is the biggest damn buzzkill for pregame 2 minutes before the team runs out.

I remember two years ago going to the egg bowl at UM and feeling sorry for my brothers (UM season ticket holders) because of how poorly everything was run.

I expect after this coming Saturday I will feel the roles have been reversed.

A couple years ago we were advertising a "big game atmosphere". Big time recruits want to play at big time programs in big time games. If we don't have the big game feel it will be hard to pull in the better recruits. And this season has been awfully hard to listen to on tv. I enjoy hearing the crowd on tv and when I don't hear it that means it's not there.

But 11am kickoff times. Blah, blah, blah. That shouldn't stop fans from being excited to watch the bulldogs play. It all seems to boil down to that goshdang dawgzillatron. It feels like it has become the main draw in the athletic depts eyes.

Maybe they are trying to make up the money spent on that and the new renovations so the have as many commercials as they can to make up revenue. I don't know. I just hope we get that fixed next season.

Gotten off topic. Recruits don't want to come play for a school to see themselves on a big HD video board. They would rather feel the fans cheering and barely be able to hear teammates because everyone is so fired up and screaming for the team.

Sell......this has just been an issue this year.....

But I must admit, I've noticed it and cannot ignore it. They have to get back to what they were doing the previous 3 years. INCLUDING THE UNIFORMS.

WHY CHANGE A GOOD THING????? Infuriates me.

I agree here, I had the same feeling. Their atmosphere was beyond terrible.

Good thing is, if it changed that quickly, then it can change back quickly.

This is hands down the biggest issue with the board/atmosphere in my opinion. The crowd is on their feet screaming and ringing bells to "All I DO Is Win" anticipating the run out and then that commercial comes on and kills everything.

The endless commercials really are a buzz kill. A few years ago, a big turnover or something resulted in a deafening "Go State" cheer with the band playing. Now it results in an awful commercial blared through the jumbotron. I realize athletics is a business, but we are really starting to fail when it comes to fan experience.
Maybe next year the fans could fight back by ringing cowbells as loudly as possible during the commercials?

Completely agree. We really need to cut the commercials in half and increase the price. I doubt we could quite break even on that, but we wouldn't be losing 50% of the revenue either. But they are absolutely killing the atmosphere at the games.

I agree about the "This is OUR State" commercial. It should be played about 15 minutes before the game. Before the band takes the filed to play the "We're gonna beat the hell outta you" song. We get that out of the way, and then we're ready to get pumped up.

The whole video board timing seemed to be more out of whack Saturday than it has been for any game this season. There were delays on the "plays of the game," the sound kept going in and out, etc. Not what you would expect when they've had the whole season to get this **** sorted out.

I think what happened is that the video board was a huge deal for us to get. I love it. But I think all the local businesses were excited about getting on there. It's basically taken the one good thing about coming to the game instead of watching it on TV, the gameday experience and no commercials, and ruined it.

Thankfully, they are playing the lovely Mercedes commercial (with the timeless Janis Joplin) before the game now. But we need to ditch the car commercials. Mr. and Mrs. Overly-excited Muscle Man Ford dealer need buy a banner or something. The Chevron car race needs to go. The hide the Egg Bowl trophy should be played after the band finishes before we come back from halftime to get the crowd's attention, and then go to rap music to get us hype again.

Overall, the extras are just a buzzkill. I had a friend who's a UT fan come to the game this year and he said, "Man, y'all sure do have a lot going on." It's almost embarrassing.

AND NO ONE WILL EVER THROW THAT GODDAMN BALL 50 17ING YARDS THROUGH THE WINDOW OF THAT CHEVY. JUST STOP.

Also, I think student association needs to make an instructional video for our students. Yes, like the one ole miss did that we made fun of. I was digusted with the turnout for the last game of the season when we're having our best run in years. The students who didn't come should be ashamed. I missed one home game my entire time at State.

It has become to commercial for my taste. The first time i witnessed non-stop advertising at a sporting event was when we played in the Liberty Bowl. Man that anouncer got on my last nerve. At the time I thought it was more because of the bowl game and Memphis in general, but low and behold we bring that same atmosphere to Starkpatch.

Lets use the board to further the School rather than promoting a business. Would it be safe to assume you could cut the advertisements by a third or a half and still generate enough revenue. Possibly increase the rates or have the advertisments (the majority at least) pre-game?

I cannot count the times I heard Scott Strickland, Scott Strickland... crap give it a rest (let and someone else in AD's office hand out an award or two....

Got it off my chest now , where's the Tylenol!!!

What if we got the PA guy to plug businesses at the end of his statements? "Ladarius Perkins runs for a gain of 8 yards....brought to you by Carl's Jr."

It's gotten to where I wish someone would unplug the 17ing thing...

I enjoyed games more before it existed, based on how we use it.

I brought an uncle and cousin to there first game ever and was embarrassed. If it had been my first game I would hope and pray I never had to set foot in the stadium again. I say all of this because I truly care about our success and see that we are headed in a very bad direction if we don't make some major changes. I say we hire someone full time to be in charge of "game day atmosphere".

The use of the board is awful.

I understand it has to be paid for. Fine. However, if the AD had polled the fan base if they would wanted a $6M+ television only to have it blaring the same awful commercials over and over and over again, the vast majority would have voted no. Give me a smaller tv that's appropriately used and let's not have to worry about the insane price tag.

The board should complement game day and not be the center of attention. If it is the center of attention, it better be because it's showing a great angle on a key replay (kudos to the operators on that point last Saturday, they finally got that part right), showing some crowd shots ant appropriate times, or providing stats. It should not be the center of attention in a cheesy and corporate way. Advertisements are appropriate in the right amount. That amount is going to be a point for argument, but I feel that most would agree that we have far exceeded it.

Roast me if you want, but I stopped going to games partially because of the student section and mostly for the experience they've managed to 17 up. You can't get a seat unless you go in 2 hours early and it's the most painful 2 hours you could imagine spending. Don't like the videos 5 minutes leading up to kickoff? Try those for 2 hours. It's like consciously choosing to stay up until 3 am to watch infomercials.

It's been said several times on here how they sell too many student tickets. It's true. A lot of you claim that "I never missed a game" and such but you never had to get in line 2:30 hours before kickoff to get a spot to stand for the game.

In a couple years when I can afford seats, I'll be there. But I'm never sitting in the student section again.

The security and police treat every single person college-aged like a criminal too.

I sit in the student section every game, and I never get there more than an hour before kickoff, and I never stand... You may not be able to get anywhere you want, but there are plenty of seats available. You either don't realize how big the student section is, or you're just not trying.
