Buy/Sell: Promoting Parker (specifically) muddied the situation

EDIT: I am/was 100% for moving on from Lem.

I want CJP around the program (as a pitching coach) as long as possible. Let's say he makes it to a Super. I still don't think we should hire him as the HC. He and his agent will think he deserves the reins and $1.1M/year. They won't get it and they will be gone. I may be wrong, but I think just about any skipper we bring in will want to retain him. Maybe I'm wrong.

So far its validated the decision and in the long run should assist in finding a replacement. Everyone has known now for a full week that we are in the market for a replacement and that should have started the thought process of coaches and agents alike wanting to make a move for them. SEC Tourney won't be over for another 3 weeks, why would you not want a head start on finding a replacement, unless you have the Rick Cleveland thought process that you just sit back and watch another 4 weeks of shi-tty baseball after watching the last 4 seasons of it and THEN decide to make a move when the rest of the country starts to think about it.......

Sell, the players adrenaline will wear off and they’ll revert to what they’ve been all season. This past week was a perfect storm.

I think from an immediate winning standpoint, the decision was correct.

In the long term, I think it's going to create an awkward dynamic where we won't be able to retain him.

If he wants to be at Mississippi State next season he will have to sell the Dynamic New HC on his PC skills being the best in the business! Otherwise, we will have a new staff that is serious about winning and getting to Omaha!

What is this? What are you expecting? We need a new coach and we are going to get a new coach. Whomever the new coach wants on his staff, he will be able to hire. I don't think these baseball coaches are hurting for work.

SELL!!! What would have complicated the situation is leaving in power the coach your clearly are moving on from, and him winning a series from a below average Kentucky team on super bulldog weekend and sweeping Missouri. Finishing are 12-13 wins and the old heads making a push to keep their buddy in power so they can whoop each other off over knowing a kids parents.

If he makes a super regional will any other schools be offering him $1.1 million to be a first time HC? I don’t think so.

When you fire a head coach in any sport, it is *generally* unreasonable to think you can keep top assistants.

I've been so apathetic towards the baseball program (and tbh, the athletic dept in general) so I'm not as in the "know" as to all the things that are happening. That being said, I do still have a lot of friends, some of which are in the "know."

One former player (who is also a massive donor, fwiw) told me that he "fought for him to be the interim coach," and that he thinks he's a great option moving forward. I'm not claiming that he knows it all, but he would definitely be a lot more aware of things going on than myself, and I'm guessing a lot of the vocal folks on here and social media.

I don’t see it as affecting anything as far as keeping him or not keeping him. If he does really well in the interim role and still doesn’t get hired, he’s either going to remain as pitching coach or we will have someone better. I don’t see someone not retaining him unless they already have a long term working relationship with a bona fide pitching coach that they will bring with them.

The issue is the dynamic of an interim "hitting a homerun" and then not wanting to settle back into an assistant role.

Right. Once in the big chair there will be a few players that will always choose their old leader to be loyal to when the new leader tries to correct them. Just a mess.

We've seen this happen in football here and at other places.

I don't think we can take that risk, unless it becomes our only option. And that would be shocking.

Hard Sell. Parker really hasn’t beat anyone yet… Memphis is horrid, UK should be someone we at least win 2-3 against every year regardless of who our coach is.

I agree with the premise of your question. I thought about it too. Doesn't usually work out to go back to the assistant role after being successful as a HC. So yes, I buy that it created an awkward situation.

One question is, can we increase his pay enough so he stays? That may depend on how much we have to shell out for the new HC.

That’s more of a fanbase narrative than a reality. I think most who are very knowledgeable about college baseball are keenly aware that 2-3 weeks is an extraordinarily small sample size to use for any conclusive judgment….good or bad. None are more aware of this than the coaches themselves.

Lemonis was able to present himself as an elite coach for 3 years. Cannizarro was able to fool the public for over a year into thinking he was qualified to hold a position higher than bat boy in an SEC dugout. Gary Henderson was the toast of the town for 4 months. And so on.

Even if Parker is somehow hot and bothered about getting snubbed, he would still have to find another gig that was equal or better….and there aren’t many of those spots that are going to be available regardless.

Dude - how delusional are you?
We have beaten Memphis and a very mediocre KY team that is down about 7 players from the beginning of the year.
If Parker gets us to Omaha then I may be open to giving him a shot but damn!
