In recent years, UM has already instructed media to refer to them as Mississippi. Look around - lookup scores anywhere online and try finding anyone that calls them Ole Miss. Every scoreboard out there calls them Mississippi. Used to not be that way.

Sure some writers still refer to them as Ole Miss. But more and more, its Mississippi instead of Ole Miss.

I'm not sure we'll see some proclamation that says no more Ole Miss. I think Ole Miss will simply fade away as Mississippi is used more and more. Having a bear to print on apparel instead of script Ole Miss is going to help here. Might take a while to get around to replacing the helmet logo though.

If the University is dumb enough to go with the Black Bear, the 'Rebel' description will eventually be dropped along with 'Ole Miss'. I'm sure it will take many years before it happens, but to fully put the old south tie ins behind them......they need to drop those names as well. I hate it for them. ;)

If the school is determined to get rid of all the old south stuff, this is the only thing left. They'll have hell doing it though.

It's in our endzones. It's in the baseball stadium, in the basketball arena.

Script Ole Miss is on the front of some of our football uniforms. It's still on the football helmets. It's on the apparel our coaches wear.

Hell, script Ole Miss has been our mascot for 7 years now. It's on the side of the water tower on campus.

If we're going to change anything in the future, I think Rebels would be a whole lot closer to the chopping block. The reason why is the term "Ole Miss" and its original meaning are far less known than the current meaning. The term has been re-defined, so that it means something different today than it meant 150 years ago. That's why I think it's safe.

The swastika, for instance, used to be a religious symbol, before the Nazis adopted it. Now it's a symbol of hate. Symbols and names change. The term Ole Miss is far enough removed from what it used to mean, that its current meaning is now the accepted meaning. I could be completely wrong, and maybe it'll be changed, but I just don't see the need for that. The other moves we've made all made logical sense to me. Dropping "Ole Miss" would be unnecessary in my opinion.
