This is a good win at Kentucky where Rich Brooks was saying that this was the biggest Kentucky home game in 30 years. We're 4-5 with NO quarterback and we put up 500 yards on the road in the SEC. Huge win and we are definitely moving forward very fast.

...I mean, it's a great win. But when it comes down to it, the way we've played against ranked opponents leading up to this one, we really should've won this game.

Now, if we beat Bama? Huge step forward.

It was a fairly even match - or you may even say Kentucky had better talent - and we won on the road. Crooms couldn't even beat the teams we over-matched half the time.

Coming back and beating a good team on their field, after the tough game MState had last week against Florida. Now, Dan has two weeks to prepare for Bammer. Here's to a 8-overtime loss next week against LSU.

We've beaten teams everyone thought we should beat (Jackson State, MTSU, Vandy) and we've kept it close against teams that were obviously superior (Florida, LSU, etc).. the only team I felt like we've played prior to this one that we matched up with fairly was Auburn. And they were playing out of their minds at the time. I think beating Kentucky proves that we can beat teams equal in talent to ours or maybe even a little superior.

That's something we couldn't really ever count on with Crooms. Now we just need to beat one team that we shouldn't beat and it will be a successful season. I called 4-8 prior to the season.. and we've got three chances to improve. 5-7 isn't THAT bad. Especially when you know you had chances to win another 3 or 4.

Good win definitely, HUGE win not so much, top 15 opponent goes down at this point it would probably be HUGE. This win SHOULD be expected. We beat Vandy, they are below us in the cellar, We beat Kentucky, they are below us in the cellar, to climb out of the West we need to either beat Ark or OM, hopefully we will beat both (and we can). That makes us the 8th best team in the SEC this year (or 5th worst). Climbing the right direction for sure but HUGE, not so much.

1. We beat a team we were supposed to beat.
2. Our OL dominated and AD continued to be a man on a mission.
3. After an absolutely horrendous start, Lee managed to hit a big pass and not kill us the rest of the night.
4. Our D bent, but didn't break when it mattered. Great call to blitz on the last UK 4th down by Torbush.
5. A win is a win is a win.
6. We played with great effort and determination after 4 heartbreaking losses to top 15 teams.
7. We kept our bowl chances legitimately alive.
8. We ensured what will likely be another record crowd for Bama in 2 weeks.
9. We have some serious momentum when Bama rolls into town in 2 weeks.
10. The team was finally rewarded by winning a close game.

Yes, this was definitely a big step forward. Now we need to find a way to win 2 of the next 3.

because this team is learning how to win, and they've come so close before. This was the best team that we've beaten so far- and we did it on the road. Another close loss would have just added to the frustration.

But now, they have some confidence and are going to get a little bit of a break with the bye week.

While it smells like teen spirit, this ground game domination was against he SEC's worst rushing defense and the win came against a team with a redshirt freshman backup QB (who almost beat us) and an injured RB. They had some other key injuries too.

None of this subtracts from the win. But it also means we didn't make any huge stride Sat night.

We really need some sheers around here for all this wool. It was a great win and a very important win for us going into an off week and then a tough three game stretch but this was nothing more than a good SEC road win in a mediocre first season for Mullen. I know this is going to sound odd but I think the most important thing for this team will be the remaining two home games. I don't even thing we need to win them, we need to keep them close and we need the crowd to come out strong. Reading what the recruits are saying about us it seems like everyone feels that Mullen has MSU heading in the right direction and when the fans are packing the stadium for a three win team against Florida it means a lot to the program. The stadium should be rocking for Alabama no matter what. The most important win in our programs history will hopefully come on signing day next year.

Our guys need to win games like these in order to be consistant bowlers, however I call beating Bama a HUGE step forward in our perception outside of MS (inside MS for that matter too) and for our player's confidence. That would be a big one.

Really? As Crxxm say, "You must be blind if you can't see the improvement this team has made."

Our offense has improved from 5 (or maybe 6) consecutive seasons of no higher than 100th (out of 119) to the 50's. Same players. Same 5'8"walk-on QB. (BTW, I am a Tyson Lee fan. He plays to his full potential probably more than any player we have.) We've only had one game that was over before the 4th quarter. Do you remember the last 8 years? 4 wins with the #1 toughest schedule in the nation http://web1.ncaa.org/mfb/2009/Internet/toughest%20schedule/9games_cumm.pdf (including FCS) or http://web1.ncaa.org/mfb/2009/Internet/toughest%20schedule/fbs_9games_cumm.pdf (FBS only). Last year, we were LAST by a longshot in the SEC. This year, we are better than UK, Vandy, maybe Ark. and maybe UM. I'm interested to see what Mullen could have done to improve his "mediocre first season".

Crxxm's QB recruits:
Mike Henig (2004)
Ty Evans (2005)
Tray Rutland (2005)
None (2006) - stable was full, I guess?
Josh Riddell (2007)
Wesley Carroll (2007)
Chris Relf (2007)
Tyson Lee (2008)

edited to include link proving #1 toughest schedule

but we are 5th in the SEC West. By no measure is this a groundbreaking season. We have made huge improvement and I have all kinds of faith in Mullen that he is going to do some great things with our team. BUT, this is a mediocre season. We are going into the last three games of the season against the number two team in the nation, a great offensive team, and our rival needing two out of three just to be bowl eligible. Maybe you can do a dance at four wins but that is still a mediocre season, granted it feels better than our recent string of mediocre seasons so that might be fluffing your wool up, but pretending this is a great year is just idiotic.

As for what Mullen could have done to improve this season, probably very little. I started out thinking 4 wins would be about the max so anything past this is gravy. It seems as if you are just comparing this year to last while I am comparing this team to all of college football. Compared to last year this is an excellent season... it's still mediocre though.

You nailed it on the head. You could see it in the players and coaches faces after the game. I don't know how the rest of the season would have played out if we had lost another close game and I am glad we don't have to find out. Finally winning a close one does great things for the program right now and this season especially with the off week coming up. I also think it was huge because pretty much so many players played a huge part in our win from our LBs to Dixon to the line to Relf to Lee and our WRs even. That really gives our coaching staff something to build on.

that the close games we have played, were not flukes.
Shows that we have to be contended with.
And it was necessary for the mental attitude of our team.

We actually only have to go back to 2007 during which we beat Auburn and UK on the road.

As much as I hate to say it our guys need to learn how to win. We've been so close in a lot of games this year but actually closing one out is a big deal, especially since it was on the road.

Bama will come prepared Saban has not forgotten his last trip to Starkpatch.

Would love to get that 3rd road win in a few weeks.

The egg bowl will be for a bowl game, just not sure who is playing for it yet.

...when people begin referring to a win @ Kentucky as "a HUGE step forward," it goes to show the mentality Byrne & Mullen are fighting against.

What do you think MSU football is? The Detriot Lions of college football?

MSU football went to a decent bowl as recently as 2007.

Any football program that went to a decent bowl as recently as 2007 does not refer to a win @ Kentucky as "a HUGE step forward." It's more like: "This is what we expect from MSU football...to win football games @ Kentucky."
