Alabama wanted Russell, but he kept his Committment to us. In retrospect, it was a mistake for him.

Alabama runs an offense more suited to Russell's strengths, while Mississippi State seems to be going in the direction of either a Dylan Favre and Dak Prescott for the future.

Also, with Sylvester Croom back in Tuscaloosa it wouldn't surprise me to see Russell wanting to transfer, either directly or going to Scooba Tech and then signing with Bammer as a Juco transfer.

I think Dan prefers a mobile QB, but I don't think it is a necessity. I believe Dan is smart enough and good enough of a coach to change the offense around the players that he has and make it work. Just look back at the Memphis and LSU games. Played very well in his first game against a poor team. And he put a good drive together against LSU. He'll have more experience over Favre and Prescott so he'll get his chance.

They have AJ McCarron and they have that other guy (Sims?).

He's going to have competition wherever he plays. Over there, he would be competing with the local hero in McCarron.

that if we didn't get Tyler, we might be stuck with Chris Garrett right now, or Josh Hollingsworth.

Tyler may not be Aaron Rodgers, but I know who I would rather have between those three.

First let me say that I would say sell. As another poster mentioned, Tyler would face more competition at Bama than he will here.

Second, Croom is staying with the Rams per the CL blog - FYI.

He might not fit exactly what we do right now but the guy with the big salary is adamant we will be passing the ball more. Dan is not a cynical guy he believes any of our qb's can start come Sept. If Russell's throwing ability eclipses Relf's running ability Mullen will name him the starter, period.

Well the qb battle better be decided before fall practice starts. If we are going to revamp our offense for Russell I would at least prefer us to have all of fall practice to do so. Also Russell better be damn head and shoulders better than Relf to even be considered the starter going into the fall

He will be the starter next season. And then Prescott will start in 2012. Russell never starts a game as QB as State.

Then we wouldn't have to suffer through the Russell vs. Relf threads and people writing off Russell after a redshirt freshman season when we actually have a competent starting QB for the first time in a decade.

I'm about to piss off one of the best posters on this board (dudehead), but Russell did not have an offer from Alabama. He was a target early, but he was always going to be the second QB in that class behind mccarron. And after Star Jones committed, Russell was the odd man out.

Interestingly, Jones figured out quickly that he was in depth chart hell and transferred last summer. I won't be surprised if TRuss thinks similarly once DP gets going.

it's developing a QB. If he can do it with Relf, I know he can get as much out of Prescott, Favre, and yes, Russell.

To me, saying that Dan Mullen can't adjust to our QB's is saying that Dan is a bad coach, and I don't believe that is the case.

the offense to look like...he wants a mobile QB that can make throws- he had that in Ralph to end the season and he has that in Prescott. And that is why Prescott was made to enroll early- to get him ready to play.

Hell, Prescott passed for more yards his Senior year than Ralph has in HS and College combined to this point. And he only played the 1st half in 6 or 7 of the games this past year. He threw for 39 TD's in his Senior year alone- and almost rushed for 1,000 yards playing the last half of the season with a hurt knee.

He is a player- and exactly what we have been looking for.

this isn't really saying much other than Prescott's high school coach is better than Relf's HS coach. I don't think that's up for debate.

.....have a good QB graduate, then reload with a SO or JR who proceeds to pick up right where the other guy left off..... Well, that's what we're going to be like.

Obviously Relf and Russell are different QB. But the way Mullen develops people, I think having a good QB graduate is not going to be a downer. The next guy is going to come in and kick *** in his own way.

That's one QB that I saw before games when we played them and thought "can they just give us their back up?"

and what you describe may be accurate. I do know that Tyler had a verbal offer from Saban in July of his rising senior year because Saban made the offer when the Cats won a big Bama 7 on 7/Nike event that summer. Whether that was a "real" or committable offer, I don't know. I'll leave that to folks that follow and know more about recruiting than I do.

By the way, Tyler also had a verbal offer from Spurrier. But again, he simply wanted to go to State, even after Croom was let go. I really thought he would go elsewhere after Croom was fired.

Two years ago, I was sure Tyler would be the starter today. After watching Relf in several scrimmages during Croom's last spring training, I never believed he would be a starting QB in D1, much less the SEC. I'm amazed at how he has developed and how Mullen has shaped the O to use his strengths and avoid his weaknesses. Relf has definitely earned the starting spot in my book. But, having said that, I hope Tyler gives him a good run for it in the spring. We'll see.

Alabama won a National Championship with Greg McElroy, a mediocre talent. Just think what the Tide could've done with Russell, a tall QB with a cannon.

I think Mullen does great with big, physical running QB's who can pass just enough to keep the defense from crowding the line of scrimmage. Russell is big and tough, but he's not a natural runner.
