We are going to get outgained 425-150 at Ole Miss. Final score 37-6. I haven't decided yet if that is 2 Shankson field goals or a missed extra point.

I didnt realize we were going to switch to the spread offense in Crooms 60th game as head coach and stay in the shotgun most of the day...

desperate times call for desperate measures...this shows me even more that Crooms job was on the line today

Our defense is similar to what we ran with Ellis - it's a bend don't break and hope the other team either doesn't make plays or shoots itself in the foot. The big thing that we don't have this year is a decent rush end. So we rarely pressure the QB into rushed throws.

We're an adequate defense..but we haven't been good in the 4th quarters lately. OM can score on just about anybody so they'll roll up at least 350 yards against us no sweat.

Today we were bad early - good in the middle and then bad late again in our "prevent" defense which is not supposed to give up 15 yard routes at will.

So does it come down to Croom/McCorvey here next year or Croom/McCorvey not here next year, he just said he stayed out of the offense completely coming into this game. He said he told them to do what it takes to win this game and stayed out of the way.

Don't forget "Miles will still win 10 games" after the Georgia game. Then 9 after the Bama game. Do I hear an 8? A 7?

We won't be top 20, but Bama had little to do with it.

After the MTSU game, we were 22nd in total D.
After UK, we were up to 20.
After the open date, we moved up to 19.
After Bama, we stayed at 19, so obviously they didn't hurt us that much in the rankings.
After UPig, we are 27. That's the one that did us in.

After this week, when Ole Miss puts about 325 on us, we won't move much and will finish about where we are now.

because they brought our average per game up, as did UPig. Against teams that arent below 100, we average giving up 385+ yards a game. Thats really not good defense...Look for Mississippi to go for 350 or more

UPig- 442 yards and 28 points (and should have had more)
Bammer- 364 yards and 32 points
Middle Tenn- 348 yards
LSU- 427 yards and 34 points
GaTech- 500 yards and 38 points
Mississippi is the highest ranked offense we will play this year

Any decent offense piles it on us

....in no game this year (save Ga Tech) has the defense not kept us in it and allowed ample opportunity for the offense to win the game. Our blowout losses are a result of inept offense and special teams (see Alabama and UT). Alabama got their yards on us when the game was over in the 4th quarter and Saban came out chunking the ball.

We ran the same offense we did against UK. The only thing we did differently was QB sneak it one time on 4th and inches, which shocked me. The reason our offense looked good is their defense sucks. They couldn't cover anyone, they couldn't tackle anyone, their linebackers were virtually nonexistent, and they just plain old sucked. If Arkansas had a halfway decent defense we don't put up 20 points. Credit to the team for taking advantage of Arkansas being crappy on defense, but we didn't all of the sudden improve.

....change our scheme to the C34 endorsed spread, just like we have not been totally running the I all year. We did what we have done all year, and it just worked Saturday, which is in large part due to #1) Ark's ****** defense and #2) our five best linemen being healthy and playing the whole game.

They haven't been dominant, but they have been good enough for us to win games. Again, coaching, special teams, and offense have killed us. Defense has been the lone bright spot.

Bammer - we lead them 7-5 before our special teams essentially gave up 14 points
MTSU - we won
LSU - we were down 7 before halftime when our "coach" decided to sit on it; he killed momentum and confidence
UPig - we won and really we should have put up more points, their defense is beyond terrible
GaTech - no excuse, we played poorly

Out of our 7 losses, how many can be pinned on the defense? Here is what this is about: you worship Ellis Johnson and blasted Cheese. So, now to pat yourself on the back you complain about the defense. Problem is, they aren't the problem. They aren't dominant but they are good enough to get 6-8 wins. Defense hasn't been the problem in the Croom era and you know it. I too think Ellis is better than Cheese, but I still say Cheese has done a good enough job this year to help us win games with a decent offense and special teams.</p>

Grimes said point blank on the radio that they ran a Spread offense on Saturday. Crooms got on the radio and said he got our of the way and let the coaches coach. Everybody I have talked too said we ran more shotgun plays Saturday than we have in any game this season...

Grimes just flat out lied on the radio Saturday?

I don't care what the coaches said. Those were the same plays, the same playcalling. The reason they had success was the competition.

...Reporter : Why were you able to move the ball so well against Arkansas? Did you just execute?
Croom: Exactly. We <font size="7"><span style="font-weight: bold;">didn't change anything</span></font>.

So, if you would like to provide me with a link that shows me that JB Grimes said that we were running the Spread offense on Saturday, then I will then acknowledge that the offensive line coach and the head coach are now making directly contradicting statements (which wouldn't necessarily be a surprise, but would in no way prove that we were in fact "running the Spread" any more than we normally do). You weren't even able to listen to the State radio feed, so I know you are lying, since you were driving up to Little Rock for a concert. Even if you were listening to the State feed you either 1) thought you heard something that you didn't hear, or 2) just twisted words around to fit your agenda (I can't believe you would do something like that).

If you had watched us play all year, you would see that we spend a lot of time in the shotgun, especially with Lee back there.

and here's why- you're only going on yardage. If you give up 400 yards a game, that's 100 yrds a quarter, and since most teams probably average three offensive possessions, that's roughly 33 yards a possession.

Conversely, if you have a really good defense, but your offense turns it over 6 times inside the 20, and your defense gives up 42 points because of that, but you only hold the other team to 250 yards of offense, that doesn't mean that the defense necessarily did a bad job.

The stats can be misleading. You're twisting them to try to support your arguement.

I think they need to come out with something like a defensive effeciency rating. I think it should be based on how many points the defense allows and how long the scoring drives were. In other words, you get penalized for an 80 yard drive vs. a 20 yard drive. A defense should also get credit for turnovers created, whether the defense scored a TD on the turnover and also a way to give the defense credit for the offense scoring on a drive after they force a turnover with a TD being rewaded more than a FG.

I think that this is the best way to tell how efficient a defense is, because let's face it, the whole point is to keep the other team from scoring, not just from keeping the other teams yardage down.

1. I never said I heard Grimes say that
2. I had 2 different people text me he said that
3. I know we run the shotgun
4. I had another person text me during the 4th quarter saying that we had run a majority of our offense for the game out of the gun. Say what you want, but we dont normally do that

...So we are now relying on the opinion of some random person at the game's definition of "majoirity." And then you are making the leap that because we may have run plays out of the shotgun more than normal, that means we changed offensive schemes to the Spread? You are full of it, and you are trying to stretch all reason and logic to make yourself feel better about your bet being in jeopardy.

Because the vast majority of our plays are extremely similar to what we ran out of the I, particularly our pass patterns. Every once in a while we run a WR quick pass or screen and a shovel pass to the running back. Aside from those times, we are tpyically running traditional routes and having our QB sit in the pocket and read the defense. Our offense is extremely unimaginative.

Just because you run more out of the shotgun, that doesn't necessarily make you a spread team. See Nevada. (And yes, I know the pistol formation that the QB isn't as far back from the center than the traditional shotgun for the 9th grade football coaching whizzes out there) See the high school team in California that runs the A-11.

We're a pro style offense is what it really amounts to.

I was at the game, and honestly, we did the same crap that we always do. Now, we may have run a few more plays out of the shotgun than normal, but it wasn't THAT many more plays than normal. Maybe 4-5 more plays out of the shotgun, if that.

...The spread also has a lot to do with lineman splits and overall offensive philosophy. Shotgun does not necessarily equal spread. We have used the shotgun all year, and I am sure we had some early success against Ark with that formation and stayed with it. We tried the same thing against Bama and they stuffed us. We did not make the decision to become a spread team last week. We just tried something we had been trying all year, and we had some success against a terrible defense.

"Just because you run more out of the shotgun, that doesn't necessarily make you a spread team."

Google is your friend- Wikipedia say:

The formation was named by the man who actually devised it, <font color="#002BB8">San Francisco 49ers</font> coach <font color="#002BB8">Red Hickey</font>, in <font color="#002BB8">1960</font>. <font color="#002BB8">John Brodie</font> was the first NFL Shotgun quarterback, who beat out former starter <font color="#002BB8">Y. A. Tittle</font> largely because he was mobile enough to effectively run the shotgun.</p>

Combining elements of the short <font color="#002BB8">punt</font> and spread formations ("spread" in that it had receivers spread widely instead of close to or behind the interior line players), it was said to be like a "shotgun" in spraying receivers around the field. (The alignment of the players also suggests the shape of an actual shotgun).<font color="#002BB8">Urban Meyer</font> has added elements of the <font color="#002BB8">option offense</font> to the shotgun offense he employed as coach at <font color="#002BB8">Bowling Green State University</font>, the <font color="#002BB8">University of Utah</font>, and <font color="#002BB8">University of Florida</font>. This "speed option" or "<font color="#002BB8">spread option</font>" offense is also used by the Missouri Tigers, Texas Longhorns, Ohio State Buckeyes, and other college teams with quarterbacks who can run as well as throw effectively.

It does not say that those who use the shotgun a lot are necessarily spread teams.

Let me say this: if what we are running is the spread then my opinion of that offense has dipped dramatically.

Spread= spreading the field to run your offense
Shotgun= spreading the field to run your offense

If you run more plays out of the shotgun than you do under center you are a Spread team

...you have now crossed over into the land of football idiocy.

What's amusing about all this is that you brought all this up trying to make yourself look like less of an idiot on the Michigan bet. In doing so, you've gotten yourself more crossed up trying to defend a position you don't even believe.

How about this? I don't care what you call our offense. Todd and others have said that we didn't do anything different Saturday than we have done all year. And so if you are calling what we did Saturday the Spread, then you are basically saying that we ran the Spread all year, at least to an extent. And if running the Spread gets you to where it has gotten MSU and Michigan, your argument that the Spread is the magic bullet college football offense is soundly disproven.

And you are categorically not a Spread team just because you line up in the Shotgun. The Shotgun is a formation. The Spread is an offensive system.
