Byrne botched this hiring process if we have to wait until after the bowl game.

Wait until after the bowl games to announce or for our new coach to actually show up? If we hire someone like Whittingham or Petersen and their team is in the Fiesta Bowl I'd be ok with them coaching their guys one last time as long as we can go ahead and announce.

but at the same time "botched" may be too strong of a word. My take is that Byrne has been on the phone non-stop since Saturday, with multiple calls to coaches, agents, consultants and other contacts. He has to juggle what they say today against what they said yesterday, contract provisions and demands from each possibility, and most importantly his own criteria regarding the best man for the job. This man is in a pressure cooker the likes of which few of us have been in.

It depends on who is named at that point. If it is a coach with successful HC experience (other than TT), I say no.

The dead period starts in a week or so and last until after New Years Day. So, not much recruiting can be done. Also, I think making a quality hire in January will be much more effective in recruiting this year and years to come than settling for a lesser canidate right now.

Besides, Bryne will not let this thing linger if he doesn't have a strong shot at a viable canidate after the bowls. The longer it goes. The better I feel about a quality coach being very interested.

Clemson screwed up naming a position coach so early. UT jumped the gun also. Although, Kiffin is a better hire than a young position coach.

....I can't believe it'll go past next week.

Still... waiting until after the bowls would be devastating.

All our scholy offers are already committed to by Byrne. The new coach couldn't undo them if he wanted to. We may lose some recruits and the new coach would be behind in getting those spots filled. But I doubt we lose more than a few people.

I really don't think the timing of the hire is all that important, so I'd say that waiting until after the bowl game would have little effect on whether I think a hiring process was botched or not. Alabama had to wait a while to get Saban, and I don't think they botched that one.

If Byrne makes a good hire, that's the most important thing, not the timing. Whether you make a hire today or a month from today, this recruiting class will still be a transition recruiting class, so I don't see why the timing is all that important.
