The program that Cohen inherited is in worse shape than the one Croom inherited. I'm buying...thanks Polk.

I don't know that anyone on this team will go in the first 25 rounds.

The good thing is that we're 2 recruiting classes away from being a pretty good team. We will see a good bit of improvement next year. We have zero depth and I fully expect Cohen to continue to hoard the juco ranks for talent on the hill and the field.

could have won 5 to 7 games in each of his first two years had he been a coach rather than a publicity stunt. Cohen has a true rebuilding(from the ground up) project in front of him but he`ll get the job done because he is coach.

The biggest Croom myth is that the cupboard was bare. It may not have been in a condition to get back to Atlanta, but talent was there. If Cohen gets us to a regional this year he'll have done an excellent job.

We have MAYBE 3 SEC caliber starting hitters. On the mound, we have Routt and Whitney and that's it really. Everyone else should be playing for Polk at UAB.

...Croom inherited a clusterf*ck.

Cohen just inherited a bunch of sub-par, poorly coached players (or, more specifically, he inherited a squad with no pitching).

Morevoer, I don't recall this board giving Croom a pass on all his losses his first year.

That's because Croom was the coach, so he was responsible for all his losses his first year.

Just like Cohen is now the baseball coach, hence he is now responsible for all these 2009 season losses.

I say Mullen. No QB, no O line. Sheesh..but it doesn't look like you can teach Cohen's guys to hit either. This is close but I still say Mullen.

of the Maine loss. Even that loss didn't phase me because we beat Florida later in the year.

Cohen can't be held responsible for this. Baseball, moreso than any other sport, is won by individual players. You can't use hustle and hardwork to cover up for your weaknesses in baseball. It's not really a true team sport as in football and baseball.

...loss his first year (me included). Anybody who looks at this board just once a week knows this is a fact.

But that's okay, because Croom was the coach, so the losses were his responsibility.

Just like Cohen should be cussed after his every loss this year, because he's the coach.

...worst situation that Cohen inherited.

Cohen at least has some hitters, even if he has no pitching.

All Mullen has is Anthony Dixon & "a bunch of true freshmen who are going to have to step it up."

I am a big Cohen fan (and an even bigger Polk antagonist), but that ain't even close.

The important thing is that Cohen will fix this situation (and would have fixed a situation as bad football ca. 2003, it would have just taken a little longer) and Croom very clearly couldn't.

Croom inherited these NFL guys:
Jerious Norwood
David Stewart
Quinton Culberson
Kevin Dockery
Ronald Fields
Deljuan Robinson

Not to mention he had players w/ NFL potential, or at least solid SEC players in Jeramie Johnson, Darren Williams, Andrew Powell, Willie Evans, Eric Butler, and Richard Burch.

I get sick of hearing about the "situation" he inherited. Attitude and environment is the one thing a new coach should be able to change right away, so I don't care if they were thugs, everybody has thugs, and a good coach can control that. That's a hell of a lot better roster than Croom left Mullen with.

...a divided fanbase, a sub-par squad that didn't know how to play college football & a laughingstock (both national and local) of a program.

All Cohen inherited was a squad that has been taught a bad brand of baseball over the last 2-3 years, & a squad with no pitching depth.

Cohen is a year away from correcting his mess.

Whereas Croom was never going to correct his mess.

It's not even close as far as who inherited the worse situation.

That has everything to do with the caliber of coach hired and nothing to do with the situation inherited.

that is not a fact. The Auburn loss (which was Croom's first) was not blamed on him. It was blamed on the "mess" that was left by Sherrill. Just like any Mullen losses will be blamed on the "mess" Croom left for him. Even the Maine loss an excuse was made - 3 TO's deep in Maine's territory. There were some pissed off people, even I was pretty pissed. But the loss was excused by the situation that Sherrill left. And he made up for it by beating Florida.

Please check your archives.

and allow me to interject briefly on the Croom-Maine subject. At the end of the Maine debacle, I posted that Croom was not head coach material and suggested that we would regret the day he was hired. I specifically blamed him for that loss. I don't think I was a lone wolf with that attitude.

I'm no prophet, but I like to think that I have a broad perspective on things. To me, Maine was an obvious red flag. It showed Croom was completely out of his league - the veritable Peter Principle walking around in ample flesh. It showed he had no clue how hard you have to work as a D1 head coach.

Having said that, this business of comparing the Croom debacle to what's going on with Cohen is just f'n retarded. Does anyone seriously worry that Cohen will not work his *** off to bring championships back to vegas? And wait til Byrne & Co. set that hard-charging MFer up with what will no doubt be the most state-of-the-art facility upgrade in college baseball.

in Ron Polk's 30+ years of coaching college baseball (and finished 10 games below .500). That right there should tell you all you need to know about the talent Cohen inherited.

I mean any coach worth his salt should be able to ride that 255 lb horse to 7-8 wins.

Just imagine a 250 lb HB coming at you out of the spread, he is going to be unstoppable.
