because he won't get the chance- someone else will hire him away before he will get the opportunity to surpass Jackie's accomplishments.
Now, if he stays, I say buy. Mullen is by far the most organized football coach I have ever seen at MSU- including Jackie.
And remember, Jackie kind of underachieved in my opinion because you could always count on losing to a LSU team- sometimes a bad LSU team, and you could also count on a random game that we would lose that we should not. Not to mention Jackie's list of debacles- Arkansas State tie, Northeast Louisiana, La Tech 96, Troy State Tornado special, and Tulane 2003. I also think our offense was somewhat misutilized during his tenure- it wasn't as bad as McCorvey, but let's face it- it was three yards and a cloud of dust. Can you imagine the 1999 offense with a spread offense? Also what would Mullen have done with Jackie's first team in 1991, which was very talented?
Jackie is held in high regard by most MSU fans because he did win, and deserves every bit of praise for that. His greatest contribution was the attitude that he brought, which was "you don't have to be an also ran, you can win here", and that is a big reason why we are having a lot of success at the gate. At the same time, he essentially went .500 at MSU, and he looks better because the guys he is compared to- Shira, Bellard, Felker, Paul Davis- all royally sucked. Bob Tyler was a good coach who had his career tarnished by probation- he was actually probably better than Jackie as a coach- and then very few of our fans were even born in 1941 much less remember Allyn McKeen.
