It's always cute when they try to disregard that Hattiesburg is pretty deep in SEC territory and try to make it seem like Hattiesburg thrives from USM when it's really the other way around. I've found more overall SEC fans in Hattiesburg than I know USM fans (yes, I know one of the 10). I'm thinking about posting just to stir up the roost a little bit out of boredom.

They're boycotting because Mitch Williams left? What other station do they think they're going to watch? My impression of Mitch is he was a huge USM homer and seemed like a real good guy, but he was not a good sportscaster.Kind of like a less creepy Rob Jay.

If you add up total number of SEC fans (State, OM, Alabama, LSU) in Hattiesburg they WAYYYYYYYYYYY outnumber USM fans. I would venture to say that State and Ole Miss individually are pretty equal to the USM crowd. But this is nothing new for the USM fans in Hattiesburg.<div>
</div><div>My first post on this board years ago was about them boycotting Peppers because he was a state grad, he didn't have enough USM stuff on the walls, and he was against raising tourism tax 1% to fund their stadium expansion.</div><div>
</div><div>Those folks are crazy.</div>

Interested to see how that series turns out. I'm of the opinion that Ole Miss and State should never play USM, but whatever. I think State wins both games.

Since I'm from Hattiesburg for one and wouldn't mind going back home every now and then to watch the two play, but also I think the state teams should play each other every now and then for multiple reasons. I understand why others are on the opposite stance but regardless I think it would be something fun to see once in a while.

But, what does Ole Miss and State have to gain by playing them? Yeah, I know this is a tired argument, but if there was no usm and just Ole Miss and State, I think our schools would be larger, more productive and like Alabama and Auburn. USM has roughly 25k fans at a game. 25K fans syphoned off from our schools.

I'm surprised he stayed that long and left Typically people leave after 1-2 years or become lifers like. Randy Swan, Jim Gibbon, Miranda Beard, or Larry Johnson.

Although I feel that anytime State and Ole Miss would play Southern that more than likely the games would be packed, but it's evident that if that setting were to happen, Southern would reap the most benefits out of the 3 by far. Even with that considered, I still like the thought of playing them just for the simple fact that it's just an instate game and we all have ties to one another whether we want to accept them or not.<div>
</div><div>One of the other arguments that I tend to hear a lot that bothers me the most is when someone plays the "what if" game and points to when Southern started winning games against Ole Miss and State and drawing better recruits from instate and how that would effect both programs. That just shows an admitted fear more than it does anything else; although the possibility of losing good recruits from the little bit that we have in MS to Southern is there, I just have a hard time accepting that type of thinking. I don't blame others for feeling that way as it is rather valid if I do say so myself. I just feel that, overall, the games should be played for the state of MS as a whole.</div>

For years, I believed Mississippi had too many D-1 universities. USM and Ole Miss did siphon off players who would've gone to tMSU. However, you look at Alabama, and they now have UAT, Auburn, Troy, UAB, and now Jacksonville State and South Alabama. Florida now has Florida, FSU, Miami, Florida International, Florida Atlantic, Central Florida, South Florida, and maybe a couple of others I missed. <div>
</div><div>The major power schools like Florida, Alabama, Mississippi State, and Auburn will lose the occasional 5-* to one of the smaller schools, but where we all take the hit is where these players who once would've walked on are now getting full rides to these smaller schools. Subsequently, many of them develop into all-Star players at those schools (Daunte Culpepper, Patrick Willis, DeMarcus Ware, etc.).</div>

The problem here is that history is on the side of people who feel this way. I find that the older people who remember back when we did play them tend to fear a shift in power and young people who have no knowledge of that can't understand why people would think that way. The truth is, the SEC is MUCH more powerful than it was back when we played USM regularly. It would be difficult, if not impossible, for USM to get a leg up in Mississippi. Us playing them a couple of years here and there isn't going to change anything. I just wish we had held out for a 2 for 1. Just to take what little pride they have left.

I know that FSU, UF and Miami have played one or 2 of the other D-1 Florida schools(South Florida and Central Florida), but not very often. How often does Arkansas play little sister Arkansas State? (Isn't there another Arkansas school that is about to move or has movedto D-1 in everything but Football?)
UT plays Memphis but not every year. Vandy plays Middle but not every year. I don't think UT even plays Middle.
What is the other D-1 Football school in Georgia? LSU doesn't even play Tulane every year, let alone ULL, ULM or La Tech. Oklahoma and Okie St. rarely play Tulsa if ever. Missouri doesn't even have an in-state rival.

I ask these questions to expand on the "old tired" points. States similar in size to MS. do not have 3 legitimate D-1 programs. I know that USM fans think USM is just as legitimate as Mississippi and MSU, and to some degree they are. Think that through. If.....IF.....they win their conference championship, they get to play against the 7th or 8th place SEC team. Let that sink in real deep now....Because, historically, who from the SEC is usually competing for that 7th or 8th spot? Yep, the 2 Mississippi schools.

But....BUT....of all of the SEC schools (except Vandy) the 2 Mississippi schools have the smallest budget. Sooo... as bad as I hate to say it, financially, it makes more since for Mississippi and MSU to play USM that it does for those others to play their 3rd or 4th in-state school.

It took me a long time to get there, but I now believe it is time for all 3 schools to play, win or lose on the field being less important that the financial impact in this case.

It shouldn't be hard to tell by my stance on the argument that I'm on the younger end of the spectrum of SPS posters, but I'll admit that when I first found out why UM/MSU didn't play USM it made me look down on the 2 schools for a time because I just looked at their actions as cowardice (which in a big way it is). It took me a couple of years before I could just understand the reasoning much less accept it. Granted, me never seeing the 3 schools play each other has a lot to do with me not being able to empathize, I still have to admit that it does make sense to why both schools stopped playing Southern for some time.<div>
</div><div>With that said however, I still think that for the state overall and the 3 schools (to varying degrees) it would be beneficial if we played each other like bruiser was alluding to. The no doubt main beneficiary is Southern, but State and UM still stands to gain just because it's an instate game that would have no problems with selling out. Lastly, although I admitted before, I also have slightly selfish reasons for wanting to play them simply because it's just my home town. Because both MS schools have one of the lower budgets in the SEC and the State as a whole has the 2nd lowest population (Arkansas being the lowest, but they only have 1 major school) in the conference I think we need every little help we can to pull in finances. We don't have to play them every year (although I admit I would not mind seeing that) like you just stated, but I think it would help more than it would hurt if we played them every now and then.</div>

WDAM removed the SEC network tab from their website. Still remains to be seen if Southern or even CUSA will get a tab on their site.

start a campaign against them for removing the SEC? I don't really care, but it would be fun to put them in a no-win situation. I'm mean like that.
