Nothing against the Ninja, just that what I've seen of Arizona fans leaves me with a very bad impression. Hell, I think I would root for Ole Miss if it were UM vs. AZ.

My guess is that with cost of living, Byrne is making less there than he would have, their football and baseball stadiums leave a lot to be desired, its in a worse conference with a far worse tv deal, and has a fanbase that is pretty apathetic about things not invented by James Naismith.

It may have been to Byrne, but Im just not sure of that. You would think that their athletic program would be a lot better than it really is. Maybe its just that this is the first time I've researched it.

it would be that the money didn't matter. I'm sure it mattered -- perhaps it wasn't the #1 concern, but it mattered.

too lazy to google it, but I'd imagine their budget is a good deal bigger than ours. I'd be surprised otherwise.

More money = more responsibility = higher expectations.

Greg already exceeded expectations at state and in 3 more years we would've built a statue likely just from him doing what he was supposed to do.

Thanks again Larry.

We are at 40, and they are at 52.... Again, it may be a better job, but is it one worth moving for and getting a small raise, if any when comparing the cost of living.....

then the AZ job itself really isn't that great.

When Byrne took the job, I immediately thought "damn, that's a great job". Then I looked into and Damn, its just not.

But it probably will be when Byrne leaves.

...very lateral-ish. I have been told that it was strictly a family-based move. To me, Oregon is a much more attractive PAC-10 job than Arizona.

But Arizona is a 17'n Desert! To me that makes Arizona "The Ball sack of the Nation or the chode".

Byrne seems like a nomad. If you look at his history he doesn't stay in the same place for very long. Maybe it's different this time because of the whole family/roots thing, but I'd wager that he'll get UA up and running and then leave.

It's not that bad if you ask me. If I were going to live out west it'd probably be where I'd want to live, probably Phoenix or Tucson. The weather in Tucson is actually pretty comparable to California.

If you haven't been, you are just as bad as those who talk bad about Starkville/Mississippi that heard everything about it from word of mouth and generalizations.

But, the education situation in Starkville really is a problem when people are looking past their professional life and to their family life. I'm not sure what the solution is -- but it is a problem for the University attracting profs, and presumably athletic department personnel. And it's not a problem that money solves -- Starkville Academy (in my view -- I know I will get some arguments) is just not a very good school.

And if you want a young go-getter, they are more likely to have school aged children where this comes into play. I'm not saying this is why Byrne made the decission he did. But, it could have come into play. And I KNOW it comes into play when attracting other personnel to the area.

..KEEPING the good personnel you've hired. Somebody like Byrne will take our AD job despite the situations you're talking about just to boost his resume. But the first time an offer comes along (lateral move or not) that would put his kids in a better educational setting, he's gone.

The downward spiral of the schools in Starkville is sinking the community bit by bit.

And don't get me wrong. It's a very complex problem. Tax base, economical demographics, leadership, current economy... you name it.

The education situation in Starkville is not good, anddefinitelyharms the ability for MSU to attract the best and brightest. I think it is the biggest problem/negative for MSU at the moment, because without the best personnel, you will always be middle of the pack. Oxford has both Oxford city and Lafayette County schools, both of which are good options. Hattiesburg has Petal and Lamar County, plus PCS.

No. not really. You've got a maniaccontrolling the school board. Theboard hired a like minded maniac. Together, they plan to force the rest of the public school's minority demographic group to go to SA.

..building an entirely new high school facility and turning over the old building, grounds and sports facilities to the middle school.

A simple $40M project.

I guess that's one benefit from having a tax base feeding public education instead of draining it.

I suspect Arizona has their share of problems too, but I doubt he will have a "retired" AD hanging around stinking up the place yucking it up with his band of cigar smoking merry men? I don't know if this has anything to do with anything, pure speculation. </p>

"It's funny," Dempsey says, "but Greg didn't call about the job
himself; he called to recommend two other people. But I stayed with
him and remained in contact for two or three weeks. He really
struggled with the decision. I can tell you this: He didn't do it
for the money. He did it because Arizona is a better job."
...is correct, it is a better job, and that shouldn't piss anyone off. However, I highly doubt Greg Byrne said that, in fact Dempsey didn't use any quote resembling that...it was a homer editorial comment.

becomes much smaller when you consider that Arizona has to pay for gymnastics, swimming and diving on top of all the sports we compete in.

...in fact almost at the corner of Camelback and Central. It was HOT in Phoenix, sometimes 115 degrees, but Tucson is about 3,000 feet higher in elevation and was always about 7-10 degrees cooler. Tucson is a much nicer place than Phoenix. It also has lower humidity.

they are in a large city in a large state and they have a budget that is $52 mill compared to our $40. Their football stadium capacity is virtually identical to ours. That is just amazing to me.

But, I am guessing the entire state ain't like the resorts I stay at when I go there.

And the weather is nice, until summer. People can talk about the lack of humidity all they want. But 120 is hot enough to fry your gonads in your pants, not matter what the humidity is. I find the desert interesting, but I wouldn't want to live in it.

With all that said, there are nice areas everywhere. And there are probably more of those in Arizona than in the Golden Triangle Metroplex. In a town the size of Tucson, the words "We just can't get that here" just don't come up very much. And that's nice.

about whether the "better job" statement was uttered by Greg Byrne or someone else.

Anyone?

Anyone?

I ask because I want to narrow down just how many other f'n retards there are on here today.

could, if passed, be used to create a charter school on or adjacent to campus that helps attract better talent?

This was several years ago, but the county schools in Oktibbeha are absolutely terrible, and there was a plan to do away with them and institute aUniversity-Teaching high school for the county schools, but of course, too many politics.... But yea, a charter school would be an interesting way to go about it. <div>
</div><div>One problem is that there are several new private/religious schools, dividing up the support for schools. </div>
