Greg Byrne email to me...
Thank you for taking the time to write and for your kind words. The university creates the logos and trademarks employed campus-wide. We do not do that within the athletic department. As part of the university, we will follow the directives of the university.

The university employed people who designed a crappy logo that everyone HATES yet has to accept since the university paid $$$ for a crappy logo.

Stupid...really, really stupid.

Guess I'm a bit old fashioned in that I believe you don't pay for a product if it does not live up to what you expect or at least you return it.

I just emailed the MSU University Relations department and asked them why we can't get a better logo or at least bring back the logo that fans and alumni prefer. It's a fair question and I hope I get a reasonable answer.

if you want the logo to change (or not change), the decision on this will have to be made on 6th floor allen hall:

[email protected].

At this point, an uproar made to the university's president is the only chance you have at making headway. UR at MSU is awful (they have no ability or desire to market the University adequately) and will not budge--especially since they have sunk so much money into it... you can trust me on that.

I have the feeling that Ruby is consulting with Keenum on all matters of any consequence to the University, so if you send enough emails to Ruby regarding the logo (at the email address above), IMO, there is a good shot Keenum will eventually get the message.

Here is a copy of what I wrote -

I am a 1991 graduate of Mississippi State University and a 2nd generation Bulldog. My father graduated in 1963. Both my brothers are also graduates of MSU. We are Maroon and White, through and through.

My reason for emailing you might seem trivial but I do appreciate you taking the time to read.

Around 1998 Mississippi State started using a very generic looking logo, commonly referred to now as the M-State Scroll logo. Over the next several years University Relations began phasing out other logos in favor of this particular design, much to the dismay of alumni and fans. The big disappointment came with the redesign of the football uniforms in 2003 when the favored interlocking M-S-U logo was replaced with the M-State Scroll logo.

Now I know this seems like such a small issue, but believe me that it is a big deal to almost every Bulldog fan I know. The interlocking M-S-U logo was a unique design that no other team in college sports showcased except Mississippi State. People used that logo on ESPN and other stations and it was nationally recognized as the logo for the football Bulldogs.

I had sent a letter to former AD Larry Templeton with questions about the logo changes and I was told that part of Coach Croom's contract has allowed him to change our football team's uniforms. I was also told that the particular interlocking M-S-U logo in use by our team from years 1996-2003 was trademarked to Nike, a company who no longer supplied our athletic gear. In closing he mentioned that the university wished to have a single sports logo for all their athletic teams. Although I understand Mr. Templeton's reply, he failed to understand my questioning the wisdom of having a popular symbol replaced.

I would like to ask you to review this decision by the university. It is my understanding that MSU paid to have the M-State Scroll logo created by a graphics company. If this is so, then the university overpaid. The M-State Scroll is unoriginal and simplistic. I'm not trying to be rude when I state that a 7-year-old could have created the design. Don't just take my word. You can go online to the sports blogs and read what the fans are posting on this issue. It is quite telling.

I would suggest you appoint a panel to review this decision or let the student body, including alumni, vote on the issue. There are several different interlocking M-S-U logos that could be used as Nike does not have Trademark on the design, just on their particular design featured on the 1996-2003 football uniforms. If the interlocking M-S-U logo isn't an option, at least consider the MS baseball logo that is nearly as popular.

Thank you for your time and please consider my suggestions.
