...2hd update to come at some point. He was there.
  • Baseball board is HD capable, but will not be shot in HD this season. Mize foundation has been very supportive in this upgrade.
  • Plans to allow the overflow baseball crows on SBW to watch the baseball game from the football board in the football stadium.
  • Talked about Mullen and gave the normal spill about how impressive he was in the interview. He also added that he talked to several coaches and one big sticking point was that "If the Green Bay Packers come calling in 5 years, that means we have had great success and positive exposure, but I don't want you playing the school through agents and the media. I want you to deal with me face to face on it. I am not going to deal with you through agents/the media, and I expect you not to deal with me through agents/the media." He said Mullen was the only one that didn't squirm when he said that. Mullen just looked him in the eye and said "No problem."
  • A question was asked about the fairness of the baseball scholarship limits and "when would the NCAA change the rules?" And he paused and asked 2HD not to quote him and said "I've never heard John Cohen complain about that once." He said Cohen had been to the registrar's office and knew the exact number and qualifications of academic scholarships and that they would get the kids in school one way or the other, and that everybody has the same playing field and these are the rules.
  • A ninja reference was made. He laughed.
  • He said 90% of what you read on the internet is false and that Petersen was never in the running. He said that he and Chris are very close friends, but that he wasn't leaving Boise and he (Byrne) knew that. He said Petersen wouldn't talk to UT, Auburn, UCLA, etc., and wasn't going to talk to us.
  • He talked about being on the staff at OSU when they were horrible and they went 5-6, which was their best season in 28 years, and Mike Riley went to coach the Chargers. They hired Dennis Erickson, and Greg was at the first team meeting and Erickson came in the room and told them that where he came from 5-6 was a bad year and that if anybody in there was proud of that or happy with that they needed to leave. He said he wants State to have expectations like that.
  • He's not a fan of agents.

It's not easy when you commute from Tupelo.
Plus, believe it or not, Veazey is very good at what he does. Lots of folks would be considered slow in comparison.

I didn't give it to him, but it fits. I don't know if it is just Veazey's promptness or Locke's lack of it, but Veazey runs circles around him.

What the hell does commuting from Tupelo have to do with it? They both attend the same press conferences in Starkville and the Bryan Building has a media room with Internet and everything. All he has to do is spend 10 minutes to write and file a blog entry before pointing his car north on 45.

And that was my argument this fall to all the "you can't talk about firing Crooms without a list of coaching candidates" crowd. Maybe it was time we finally stopped doing stuff the MSU way and join the rest of the world. If we become a stepping stone in Dan Mullen's career, so be it. Hopefully, it means he had success here. I'd rather have that than hire another Jackie or Crooms that sees this job as the end of the road and is going to get lazy as hell on us.
