He knows the individual personalities and what they can handle. I've noticed he's a little softer with Skal. Not a lot but slightly.

When you scream nonstop all the time it loses its effect. I am saying some players do not respond to it...Skal and Briscoe dont handle it well

How many Final Fours has Cal had the last 6 years? You think he gets to final fours and wins a title with young teams by keeping his mouth shut? Cal knows what he's doing. These kids screwed everything up all night long, the only way they're going to correct sll these mistakes us by stressing to them how important it us that they make the right decisions. If he was a laid back coach there would be no way in hell he would do what he does with these teams. Every year these teams get better and better everytime they step on the court. What he does works. He knows what he's doing. You don't.

ROFL!!!

Poor babies. Maybe you should arrange milk and cookies at time out.

They are quite ready for big boy pants. Good chance one or both are off to the NBA next year. They sure as hell won't be treated like mamma's boys there. Coaches yell. Lots. Get over it. I assure you the players have long since their last milk and cookies.

Less can be more. If you only yell at a guy once in a half, he's going to remember exactly what you said for a few days. If you yell at him 10 times in one half, almost everything you yelled at him for goes in one ear and out the other.

Apparently not working..also Willis needs to play in 2nd half cuz he can at least hit free throws and these guys foul on every trip

Watch Cal now and then watch him come tournament time. When **** starts going right, he is the 1st one off the bench to give them hugs and accolades for doing the right things. This is the early season Cal but when they start to get it and start playing like pitbulls, those screaming antics turn towards defending his team. I love seeing him towards the end of the year when guys are starting to reach their potential and the team "gets it".
Every single year, we get fans who want to be arm chair coaches and think we are doomed after 8 games of the season. Haven't you learned that what Cal does....WORKS! Let the man to his thang, it's obviously worked in the past. Not sure how you can say it doesn't work after all these years that Cal has been here. It's not working? Come on bro, it's still early with this young team who didn't have their vet PG playing tonight. To say that his method isnt working is just, well... BS actually. I think his track record speaks for itself. Let him do his thang.

If only you had been there to talk to my drill instructor at boot camp we could have all left basic training as pussies.

Cal should do what he thinks is best for his coaching and players.

I can't believe I read half of this thread.

I guess duct tape is out of the question. Maybe he should tickle their *** with a feather.... lol, why are we on here reading this crap.... I'm just doing research to see how stupid some of the UK fans are. Do any of you idiots have a max decibel level for the yelling? How many strokes with a feather is tooo much?

Reminds me of a coach I had in high school. One of the guys wouldn't wear his jock: sweet talking, stroking, yelling didn't work - so he fixed it. Before the game he got the other guys to hold him down and he duct taped his nuts up..... he adjusted. I think some here needs a good dose of duct tape, fingers; and mouth if I had to listen.

Everyone responds to yelling if they have to. (If they will respond to anything, some are comatose, some don't understand the words and some gets dead). So many anymore just seem to see such a small part of the spectrum - and seeming don't see what is happening to the world. he called me a hillbilly.....sue, sue, sue

I agree. He needs to tone it down. Coach K seems to do fine setting and not running and screaming his head off every breath .

None of us mind Cal getting on a kid for doing something lazy out there. It's the non stop screaming we could do without. Not just because he looks like a nut case but the kids tune it out after a couple of times. Human nature. Don't you tune your parents or your spouse out when they keep going at you? At some point that little voice takes over and says "yeah, yeah, yeah, calm down jackass".

When you scream nonstop all the time it loses its effect.

I'd agree with this if we didn't make a March run every time we've been in the tournament under Cal.

Whatever he's doing, it works. But it's a long game; the dividends don't show up sometimes until later in the season. And not only do the players respond on the court (almost always), they love him afterward for how he improves them.

That sort of thing takes psychological work. Raised voices, consternation, fury, tough love--it's crazy to watch, and sometimes uncomfortable, but he usually gets them to change over the course of a season.

He always yells nonstop on every single posession early in the season. It gets better as the season goes on as he just yanks people when they mess up. It was obviously worse last night since his floor general was on the bench wearing Timberlands.

Not debating Cals success...be a fool to do so. From my observations early on Skal is not motivated by Cals rants. However, i'm not in the Skal is can't miss lottery guy like most so maybe his rather pedestrian play has nothing to do with yelling

The funniest thing about this thread is what would happen if Cal was calm cool and collected.

There would be a thread about Cal not screaming.

I seriously doubt Cal is the first coach ever Skal heard scream. He won't be the last. Cal is not going to stop screaming. Skal won't get his feelings hurt.

What a silly discussion.

If they would listen and do what Cay says, he wouldn't have to scream. And its not like he's screams at them later in the locker room for messing up. It's during the game, in the heat of the moment. With the crowd noise and the buzzers, and they're 70 feet away and he has to get their attention.

Tubby's first year at UK, he was up on the side lines screaming and yelling as much as he could. We won a title. Tubby never again returned to that version of himself as he would spend most of his time sitting in his chair or staring. Never got back to a final four.

Cal screams and yells at players...... 4 final fours and 1 title in his 6 years at UK. ...... Pitino also screamed and yelled at UK....... I remember hearing on ESPN2 at georgia Tech "scott , SCOTT WTF?? are you doing?" and busted up laughing at just how loud he was yelling curse words. We know his success at UK.

So my conclusion.......Cal keep doing what ya doing my man.

I see both sides of this. The screaming does seem excessive at times but you cannot argue with Cal's success. Clearly he knows what he's doing.

I would love to have courtside seats to be able to hear what he's screaming.

As an outsider, I've never seen any indication that having a connection with his kids is one of Cal's problems, yelling or not.

My most beloved coaches were yellers sometimes. Other times, they weren't. It is all about how it is used, and what the relationship is.

By the way, I can't really criticize Cal too much because I'm a mad man when I'm just watching at home. I imagine it's much harder to control yourself when you're the coach with your livelihood on the line and the players are doing/not doing things the opposite of the way you've coached them.

When you're as competitive as Cal, it's hard to just turn that off, especially when it's been proven successful time and time again.

If you want to go down this slippery slope, then really none of us should be commenting on the team at all.

Because there would never be a true equivalency. "Coaching" isn't coaching on the D1 level. And coaching on the D1 level isn't coaching at Kentucky.

You could go on and on. The only barometer to really prove what you're saying is wins and losses and whether players grow under Cal. They do...but it's a process.

Not everyone responds to his screaming is what im saying...Skal obviously doesnt

I've thought the same thing, and even mentioned it last year. But then I remember, He still gets every damn recruit he wants. And for every recruit that can't handle it, there have been 20 who thrive under it, and still love Coach Cal years after they left. He's doing something right.

My point is when you have coached you understand one tactic of motivation doesnt work for all. I am big on body language and im not thrilled with Skals...it is a privelage to plat at UK...do not act put out when your coach gets in your ***
