Calculation of Strength of Schedule (etc.)

Is there something to the calculation of strength of Schedule (SOS) that I'm not aware of? This is often a headscratcher for me.

For instance, Nebraska baseball with a current SOS of 10. As much as I love our Husker brothers, I look at their schedule and it doesn't look like it could be the tenth-best out there. Is it more than just an average of the RPI of opponents/games?

Also, this was explained to me once, but I forgot. How are stats like RPI and SOS calculated at the beginning of a season, when no team has any results? There is a way the pump is primed, correct?
