Caleb Reed to start Friday

Why not Tyler Whitney? I don't understand this. Tyler is much better suited as a starter and Caleb is more valuable coming out of the bullpen. Reed and Whitney have similar ERA's to, plus Caleb got shelled vs UT. In hindsight, if Whitney starts, we probably sweep.

However, our team batting average is up to .299. We jumped up around 20 points as a team in the span of four games. And Duffy went from hitting something like .215 to now something like .377.

Anyway, jumping back to the pitching staff, our rotation needs to be:

Whitney- If Cohen doesn't like him, why not match him up against the other teams ace, and at the same time, he is better suited to start, AND it puts Caleb Reed in the bullpen where he is better suited to help us out. It's a win/win/win.

Stratton- No brainer.

Luke Bole- If he starts to stuggle, then put Reed here. Since he did well on Sunday, I think we have to go with him again.

Reed again on Friday, this is just stubborn. Reed can be very good in a certain role, which is not Friday night starting, he should be a guy who comes in and faces a lineup once, anymore than that is asking for a lot of trouble, he is always going to have trouble with lefthanders, simply because he throws sidearm. This is just not a good move, Whitney should be starting on Fridays.

I agree that starting Reed is a terrible idea. Todd is right, we should start Whitney and if he happens to get in trouble then put in Reed and/or Houston. I really have no idea what Cohen is thinking with this one.

.....but Reed pitched well enough to win against Arkansas until very late. He's basically had one good start and one bad start. I'm ok with giving him another shot.

Bama, we stick with him. Regardless, he deserves one more start. Maybe Bama is right handed dominant as well? I don't know enough about them to know.

with submarine/sidearm guys is something that is often said in baseball circles, but I'm not totally sure that I believe it. I think there is some myth there. Someone might bring up some numbers that prove me wrong though, but until then, I think that is a little bit of a myth.

Another one is that you have to be RH to throw submarine style, but Mike Myers was a very successful LH pitcher in the Big Leagues for years that threw submarine style.

but I still disagree with Cohen. Both may really be relief pitchers, but Whitney is better suited as a starter for us. And even though I was talking about myths and submarine pitchers, but one of my beliefs is that you only want a submarine guy to go through the line up only once because the second time through the order, they have seen the arm angle, delievery and are used to the speed and movement. I know that's true of any pitcher, but a lot of submarine guys are two pitch guys for the most part, and they tend to have less velocity. Their advantage of deception goes away after one time through the order in most instances. I want my Friday night guy to be able to handle going through the order more than one time.

Plus, Whitney has had many more successful starts than Reed in his career.

Dont want to bother looking up stats, but as a righthander sub guy, a LH hitter sees the ball so much longer, basically from the time he starts his delivery, it looks like a watermelon, whereas RH hitter it is hard to see and it is coming from behind your body, and the slider from the sub guy just continues to dive away from you, very hard to adjust to. But I think its crazy more LH with average stuff dont drop down, that gives you more longevity and there are a lot of big league relievers that make a lot of money being a left on left guy, I cant tell you how impossible it is to hit a left sub guy as a LH hitter, you just never see it, which makes it that much harder.

they both are better suited for the pen. But Whitney is %$+!%%% horrible and shouldn't be pitching at any level at any time. There is no one really good enough to start on our team right now excetpt for Stratton and Routt if healthy. He just doesn't have many choices. But I would choose Reed over Whitney. I think I would choose Jaron Sheppard over Whitney. Whitney would be about my 69th choice.

ERA on the team last year and it was 5.15. That's bad but not quite as bad as his 5.55 ERA this year.

I didn't imagine the part where Whitney kept us in pretty much every Friday night game last season. How many times did he leave with a lead or only down a couple to watch the pen immediately give up 6? More times than I can remember. Sure, it wasn't always pretty, but he went toe-to-toe with every other team's ace and gave us a chance. That's about all you can ask of him, ERA be damned.

which makes total sense. I think the reason I think it's a myth- and yes, this is all I have to go off of, and hardly something that disproves is a myth- is that I remember the Cardinals having a guy named Tony Fossas that was a low sidearm guy and he would just absolutely chew up Ryan Klesko with his slider.
