Honestly i have no issue with him or how he went about it. UNC is my most hated team because of how they’ve bastardized the sport and its legitimacy multiple times over now. But no one is scared of Hubert Davis.

The wilson’s themselves have more or less maintained it would be around this time they’d commit (january). And with NIL agents running the show it’s just going to be common practice for them to do what they can to drive prices up. I’d do the same.

Lmao it’s quite hilarious actually! What are they, like 12-8?! Lord.
Hubert lucked into that FF right out the gate. They weren't that good that season and caught fire in the tourney. Old Hubert is on a downward projection. If it continues like this much longer I could see him getting his walking papers before too much longer.

I don't keep up with recruiting at all anymore but it seemed like most of the board knew this was going to happen. At least the majority that I've read the last month. Dude actively chose to go to a dumpster fire of a program right now.

One thing Cal said that I always agree with is" Kentucky is not for everyone". IMO this was strictly a monetary transaction. I'm not sure the coach or even the school mattered. The kid believes he will only be there a year then the NBA. Same crap we have been dealing with for years. Ill pass on those guys

yep, they have two top 10-15ish freshman that are also projected 1st round picks along with some vets and still mediocre (see also Rutgers). Team building is the key for CBB right now. The best teams (other than Duke) are centered around not just transfers but multi year transfers.

Even Duke has a mix of the best freshman and some good Vets.

I guess I'm in the minority who thinks it's going to be hard to replace his 11 points, 5 to 6 rebounds rebounds, and low efficiency 43-45% shooting from the field, and 27-30% shooting from three.

There's no way we can find that in the portal.

Plus, at around $1.6 to $2 million, UNC got themselves such a deal with this kid. I mean, for that money we could get two (maybe three) guys whose combined value is in the Butler/Carr/Brea range, but Wilson is a five star and we need that to look cool and stuff.

Don't you guys get it?

Give me players from the portal any day over high school seniors, with the exception of generational talents such as Wall, Davis, etc.
Portal players are hit or miss as high school players. They still have to learn the system and if they are from a mid major, they will learn how much faster and physical the SEC is. But Pope will figure it out I’m sure, lord willing.

I’ll be honest, I didn’t know one thing about this kid other than he was a 6-9 five star. After reading up on him this morning, it appears he’s not a real good shooter, doesn’t always play hard, and has one foot out the door already. In other words, a typical Cal recruit that we had to put up with for 15 years. Probably a blessing he picked NC

He wasn't a must get but have to get a high level portal transfer. I mean a guy like a Knecht that is gonna dominate and be that dude and a high level talent.

With being able to go shopping in the portal with UK's money, and Pope's attitude, there aren't going to be many HS kids I'm going to be upset about not getting. I'm firmly in the camp of 'show me proven college stats' over 'nice HS hype video'. Cal made too many people believe far too hard in the one and done theory. How many times were we beat, by a team constructed the same we are now, but yet some people still want the 17yo AAU kid?

I'm more than fine with it

Look at the impact 5 star freshmen have in the national title game now. The Calipari era is dead (and to be honest it was more hype than reality anyways)

and how can you reconcile paying an untested freshmen more than Oweh who is considering returning and being a impact starter on our team next year.

It's just bad business

nothing against the kid, I'd love to have him, but when you start talking about those numbers to land a single player, he becomes an outlier - and unless he can carry the team - which I believe few freshmen can , like one every 10 years, its not a loss

Tells you that this is all about the money, which is fine, because in reality, everything is.

Im fine if we held firm on the NIL offer because this guy seemed like a "pay for hire" type, especially if he's willing to go play for a subpar coach on a losing team. BUT, we need to also look at what we're offering for NIL and adjust. While I don't care about losing this guy, I do want to know how far off we came in our pay.. because eventually you are simply going to have to pay some of these guys. And its not JUST gonna be the top15 types.. its gonna be any player in the top100, maybe beyond.

pay veteran transfer portal upperclassmen who you can count on , who are mature enough to understand its pay for play and are happy to be at a program that will give them a better chance of exposure.

I think what you're going to see is 5 star freshmen dropping in value as the ROI just isn't there. Either you empty your NIL on a kid and then can't build a team around him or the kid doesn't meet expectations because he is a 19 year old.
