he basically says he's looking for a program where he fits the system and can make an immediate impact. Then he says "and Mississippi State fits all those perfectly." I think we get him.

It makes sense because we need a QB and he already seems like he knows a lot of our system. We graduate Lee and he would only have to beat out Relf and Russell, who would be a RS Fr. (hopefully). And we need him to.

He's 6'6" 240, and that's going to help with our o-line because I don't think any of the guys that we have are going to be any better than decent, and if you have a QB with that kind of size, he's going to be hard to bring down. Not to mention, he could be like Tebow in that we can use him to run over people, which is going to help with AD leaving after this year. Hopefully he is a more polished passer than Lee and Relf because if he can get the ball downfield to guys like O'Neal Wilder, Green, and Bumphis, it's going to make us that much better on offense. I could seriously see him having the same impact that Jevean Snead has had on the Ole Miss program in terms of wins.

Make no doubt about it. This guy is what Mullen thinks about when it comes to his dream QB. He's Tebow on paper. He can run. He can throw. He appears to be a freak of nature athletically (assuming Rivals stats are accurate). We have to get him on campus.

They picked up a 4 star QB today. Tyler Bray of Kingsburg, CA. That certainly can't hurt us if Tennessee was going to be a major factor.

If he's going to make an immediate impact at any school like he says he wants to - MSU is the obvious choice. He's graduating JUCO in December. He can be on campus in January and get a head start on a system he is already familiar with. If he commits to us, my wool is going to get extra thick for next year.

Assuming the Russell's red shirt stays intact, he would have two years of eligibility after Newton and Relf are gone. Lots of guys are willing to hang around a program for three years if they believe they can start their last two years. However, if Mullen makes it clear to Russell that he will never be the man in his offense you're probably right. I think a lot of it depends on how much he really wants to be at Mississippi State and whether he believes Mullen has any intention of starting him or not.

And I had to choose between the two, I am not sure which one I would pick. I would like to see what Newton does this year. Russell starting for 4 years with a year of RS experience would also be pretty awesome. It is just hard to ignore the effectiveness of a running QB in this offense.

I definitely like Russell and I maintain that the ideal situation would be 2 years of Newton (with a little Russell sprinkled in) followed by 2 years of Russell. If we are ever going to step it up and compete with the big boys, we have to learn how to keep guys like Russell around in these situations.

Don't you think? If Relf plays 6-7 games anywhere close to how he played Saturday then Newton has to beat him out as well as Russell. Ideally we'd have all 3, but I think Newton probably really wants a spot where he doesn't feel there is much competition to be the starter and if Relf shows anything then he'll be forced to earn the starting spot.

Russell would then get 3 years in Mullen's system to learn, while playing a little, and would have his junior and senior years to start. This is how it is supposed to work anyways, we've just never been able to do it.

We need to get this under control fast. We finally have alumns coaching in the Juco ranks that can help if needed, at NW and a few others.

...But I think Russel would stay knowing he'd be the man his junior and senior season. Imagine that; a QB at MSU stepping into the starting role with enough previous snaps to be 100% ready to perform.

Tyler Russell just might beat out Cam Newton for the starting position. Why are y'all assuming the Cam Newton will automatically start? Did we hire Orgeron and didn't tell anybody? Having two or three good quarterbacks is good for the program. The competition between the QBs will make all of them better. I think Tyler will be a better quarterback in his junior and senior years if he has strong competition to learn from and compete against.

but in this day and age, dont bet on it. Look at Miami- they had 2 QB's transfer out before the first game after losing the QB battle

Should he commit, I think the only thing that keeps Newton from being the clear cut starter going into Game 1 next year is another laptop incident. For every bit that Relf tops Tyson Lee in athletic ability, Newton can match that on top of Relf - and Relf certainly isn't any slouch in that department.

If Russell feels compelled to transfer next year if Newton commits, so be it. I would think it would be a mistake however. He'd only get one more year of playing time assuming he went somewhere he knew he could start immediately - so you can rule out a high-profile transfer. It'd have to be a lateral move program-wise. I think it would be in his best interest to sit tight, learn from Mullen, learn the system, and be ready to go when his time comes. That is, assuming he's bought into the system. I can only think that is the case, otherwise he would have not committed to playing under Mullen if he didn't think the system could benefit him or he couldn't excel in it. If he's as talented as most say he is, everything will work out fine for him down the line.

All that being said, expect Newton to sign, Russell transfer, Newton get arrested, and us be left with Relf and the walkon to back him up next year. That would be the MSU way.

I really think that Cam Newton is ours to lose. He has a close relationship with Dan Mullen, and I think that goes a long way when it comes to signing a QB. As for the Russell situation, obviously he isnt as good as first expected. Newton was a back-up as a true Freshman to Tim Tebow so he has legit SEC QB potential.

So this Newton guy played at Florida and then went to JUCO? What's the deal with that? I just don't know much about this situation and would like to.

Redshirts his freshman year. Plays behind Tebow his sophomore year. Then gets into trouble for stealing a laptop. Transfers to Blinn CC, which is where he is now. He is planning on committing in November or early December to whereve (looks like we're the leader) and enroll in the spring. Hes a 5 star recruit: 6'6", 240 lbs, runs a 4.53.

Newton Commit + Brunetti Switch Commitment = Russell Transfer

He sticks it out if it's just Newton. Personally, I think Newton + Brunetti - Russell is better for us anyway. As talented as Russell might be, Mullen's offense is based around the defense having to commit a defender to the QB. We will be more effective with a guy who is a real threat on the hoof.

The more the merrier in my opinion, Mullen obviously thinks a great deal of Newton to be recruiting him, after he coached in in the SEC. If Russell gets mad about this and transfers, then well, so be it.

that Relf would transfer because he is in the same class as Newton. I think it's also possible that Relf could switch to another position like TE. He is a good enough athlete to make a switch like that.

lack of accuracy kind of worries me though. Apparently it doesn't West Virginia, though.

I venture to say with their commitment of 4 star Jeremy Johonson WVU may feel Brunetti doesn't need accuracy in the secondary.
