Can Drew Barker ‘flip the page,’ become UK football’s answer at QB?

I don't think so. I saw all I need to see on Barker at the EKU dorm. I am preparing for a dumpster fire.

12-18 = 66.7% passing in the spring game with two TD's and 1 INT would be a vast improvement over last year IMO. However, I'm well aware it was against our 2's, but it was reasonable.

Drew needs to be that kid that made him ranked so high due to his accuracy and decision making..he's not an above average athlete. The throws to Timmons and Conrad...he threw guys open and was very precise. But at times he still looks slow in his reads and the ball doesn't explode out of his hand.

Can't wait till the excuse makers start in next season just like they did with Towles. We'll hear things like "it's his first full year" and "new coaching staff" and we're still developing."

Sorry, I just don't see where Barker is the QB he's made out to be by the staff or the constant optimist on here. Not expecting much from Barker.

I saw flashes of the highly rated QB from Barker today, and he will certainly move the ball better with Boom and Baker along with some other guys who were not playing today. I also saw some bad decisions and some bad throws from him today. I support him in every way a UK fan should and hope he only gets better. Not to start the "play the backup" movement but I really liked Johnson's game . He is right on the border of being to small but his accuracy and run game impressed me. He put two right on the new 6'7 WR's hands but the kid had a cast on and dropped them. Had to leave after the first half to meet the family so never got to watch the entire game but came away with enough to know we gotta get a lot better across the board 6 games would be a great achievement for this group.

On the other hand watched a few clips of the UT game and they ar very talented. Would love to sneak in a win and beat Miss St. And play some great teams close on the way tom6 or 7 games plus a bowl win. We do anything close to that and I'll,start work on the Stoops statue.

I think Barker has potential but it won't be fully realized in 2016. 3rd OC in 3 years is a big thing to undo. Most QBs don't flouris until the 3rd year in the same system. Look at Woodson (our best QB since Bonner) and how he didn't come around until the middle of his 4th year. Stoops however is running out of time.

sorry, that's bs. Guys who are good enough can beast in a brand new system as True freshman. I'm not down on Barker, but he's clearly not the savior he was advertised to be, and frankly, it just puts more pressure on him when too many fans have unrealistic expectations.

So I'm trying to say that Barker probably won't set the world on fire in 2016, and you say it's BS by making a case for the same?

Barker has physical ability. We have yet to see if he has what it takes mentally. All I'm saying is 3 OCs in 3 years will make it tougher to overcome the mental aspect. Not every QB can set the world on fire from the start like Jameis Winston and Marcus Vick (please spare the Pitbull jokes).

I will continue to invest my heart in UK football and watch on tv but will invest no more money until I see a product on the field that provides more pride than embarrassment.

No, I'm just tired of hearing excuses for why we aren't good, or why so and so won't be great etc. etc. My reaction was probably more built up by other posters than specifically what you said. Bottom line, if we are not successful, I don't want to hear the same ol' voices giving a thousand excuses as to why. This is the year Stoops has to get it done!

Barker has a ton of room to grow and is no where near a finished product. He has a lot of the physical tools it takes to be a good qb but he is going to have to work hard at it. He is not a natural at the position. Still I trust Stoops/Gran/Hinshaw to pick the best QB for our team. If they say it's Drew then who am I to say otherwise.

Coach Stoops seems to think and he's the one that matters. Gran and Hinshaw strike me as very good at what they do and I am sure they gave their input to help make the decision.
Barker has the physical tools and from what I read, he has the backing of the team. That is huge IMO.
I'm anxious to see him perform. I'd like to see him overcome his past mistakes and have a great career.

Matt Stafford had 52% completion with 12 ints and 7 tds his freshman year.... he got better.

He was also the top QB recruit in the country, played as a true frosh, and was the #1 NFL draft pick. Barker doesn't fit the bill in any of those categories. He also played for a coach who is good at developing QBs. Not a knock on Barker, just stating facts. Barker is way behind Stafford at this point in the development curve.

He may develop, but at this point, IMO he's certainly no Couch, Lorenzen or Woodson . At this point, he's not even a Bonner. Thus far he hasn't shown anything to lead me to believe he'll be as good as any of them. Looks like he'll have his chance to make believers out of us.

On the whole, Barker was not as impressive yesterday as those stats suggest. But he had a good 2nd half. It's obvious that Drew has improved this spring. But he still has a lot of series where he doesn't read well or throw well. Consistency is a big issue for a lot of sophomores. This team cannot keep spotting opponents 10-14 points on the scoreboard, which means Barker must come out ready to play and move the team down the field in the 1st quarter. Yesterday he didn't do that against our 2nd team defense. I'm sure Eddie Gran knows this better than I do. It's worth mentioning that a lot of players missed the Blue White Game. Boom, Baker, Bone, Montgomery, Long didn't play for the offense. Barker will have more weapons in the fall.

I just hope the qb competition isn't over. I see Towles repeat on the horizon and second qb never getting off the bench.

I would hate to be a UK football coach.

After yesterday's game, Barker was named the starter for the fall. So in that respect, the competition is over. I hope Stoops doesn't live to regret that announcement, because Steve Johnson played pretty well for a guy who just arrived in the program. I don't think anyone who has watched Barker play would say that he doesn't have what it takes. He has the build. He has the arm. Sometimes he makes nice throws. Let's see if he can win football games. I'm not sure about that yet.

That pick he threw was awful. Made some nice throws into tight spaces, but struggles with the deep ball when he has to put air under it. He has a long way to go, but still young. Johson will get at least a couple series every game this year to change things up with the read option. Barker will turn into a good QB in time. Don't know if it will be this year or next. The problem is, Stoops needs it to be now. He's running out of time. We have to get to a bowl game this year.

It is good that we have Johnson in the wings. There will be games when Barker is solid, but there will also be games where he throws a few picks and gets rattled. I'd like to see us use both qb's every game. Johnson looks good on the read option plays.

I hope he can eventually be steady for us, but he just doesn't have star potential. What he does have going for him is the best stable ok f back, and group of receiver's that we have had in well, forever. He is being given every chance to succeed. But to be honest, Drew Barker as our starting QB scares the hell out of me.

Thought Barker and Johnson both had good and bad moments yesterday. Barker obviously had that awful interception, but he responded with a perfect 2 minute drive that was capped with a nice TD pass to Conrad. Johnson made good use of his legs almost every drive he was in, but he did sail high on a number of throws. I think both QBs have work to do this offseason.

How can anyone determine how good any player is going to be based on 2 games from last year in which he was basically thrown to the lions with a team that had no leadership and from a spring game with a new offensive coordinator. That applies to all players but especially the QB. Ridiculous!
