Can Drew Barker ‘flip the page,’ become UK football’s answer at QB?

Did you guys not watch Gunner...by far best QB
Yes we watched him. You saw two series from the kid and have determined he is the best qb huh? You've now mentioned this at least three times. You also can't spell his name correctly and the first time you just referred to him as the third string guy.

Mr. Hoak will have a redshirt year. Mr. Mattingly will be third string QB.

Uh.....no. Gunnar looked very good for a kid who should still be in high school, however he did not look anywhere near as good as Drew or Steven Johnson.

Honestly, I'm not really sure what game some of you guys were watching? I was there and thought Drew looked *really* good aside from the pick, which looked like more of a miscommunication with the receiver than anything. He stood in the pocket, calmly delivered some strikes, check down when he needed to, and in a couple of cases threw some truly gorgeous balls…the "miss" to Timmons in the end zone was Timmons fault for turning to the inside rather than playing his outside shoulder. DB, while not blazing fast, also has some ability to run when necessary which adds an extra dimension to his game.

Having stated above, I was also very impressed with Steven Johnson. Much faster than I thought and has a great "feel" for the zone read game. His throwing is not anywhere as good as DB's, however he could provide a very capable back-up, and a good change of pace in certain spots.

I concur.

I was calling out Ullisismyman. Jesus. No where did I say Gunnar was our third string qb or that he was the best qb yesterday. My god.

Sorry, that's my bad… I meant to reply to Ulismymyman's statement, not yours. Pressed "reply" to the wrong post.

Can't wait till the excuse makers start in next season just like they did with Towles. We'll hear things like "it's his first full year" and "new coaching staff" and we're still developing."

Sorry, I just don't see where Barker is the QB he's made out to be by the staff or the constant optimist on here. Not expecting much from Barker.

What did the staff make Drew out to be?

Gran and Stoops both have publicly praised him about his efficacy in practice, accuracy, his command of the offense. How's he ready to take that next step. That didn't show on Saturday.

Probably just whistling while passing the grave yard. Strong arm, Ky boy with NFL future. Oops, where have we heard that before?

Show me quotes where they did more than say he was working hard and improving. They have offered a lot of coach talk. But, they have not puffed him up.

Stoops raved about Barker on two different interviews with KSR this spring.

What are you talking about??

Drew looked very good on Saturday: made quick decisions, looked calm/poised in the pocket, good crisp passes including two gorgeous TD throws, ran effectively when he needed to, checked down at the proper time… I'm not sure what else you wanted to see from him?

There's a reason Gran/Stoops elected to name him the unqualified starter after the game - he played really well.

Like several posters on this board you need to go cheer for the cards. You obviously don't like UK and at every second post negative opinions and thoughts. Quite transparent in who you are a real fan of

I'm a season ticket holder since '07. I'm sorry that you and I don't share the same opinion on this year's team but after 3 years of basically spinning our tires as a program I'm in a very much "show me" mode. People last year pumped up Dawson and Towles. I never saw the fascination with him. He had a big arm and was a big kid with accuracy problems, bad footwork, and didn't have the head on his shoulders to lead. When Barker came in last year, he showed some flashes but he showed why he was #2 all season esp against UL. Spring game was pretty much what I saw out of him last year. Flashes mixed in with some not great play. The talent is a lot better than it ever has been but we've still got development questions, QB questions, and Head Coach questions. I just know, like last year, when it went south for Towles there were excuse makers and if Barker doesn't up his game, they will be there too. I don't think we get good till Mac Jones arrives to be very honest with you.

Really? I don't recall seeing DB go 12-18 with a 64 yard TD pass, a 20 yard TD pass to cap off a beautiful 2 minute drill, and run for some first downs last season......which game did he do that?

In the Vandy and the UL games there were times he looked really good. Then there were the times he looked like a #2 QB. Saturday, there were times he looked good and other times he didn't. I think people have to prepare for an up and down year from him. When you have an inconsistent QB, that leads to inconsistent results in the W-L.

I know this is going to burst your bubble bc you think I'm anti-Barker but I wanted him to play after the UT blowout so he would get some real game experience. He's not going to come in and throw for 3000 yards and 20 TDs and 6 picks. He's probably going to play for 2000 yards and his TD-INT ratio will be very close to each other. I just am not expecting a bunch out of him next year bc he's going to have a lot of up and down play

Second string defense against DB and the one offensive crew while Johnson went against the ones with the second string offensive group. Hard to overlook unless you work at it or you think our second defensive group is like what UGa, etc. will field.

Makes you think. It does me.

I have heard numerous interviews with Stoops and I have not heard him rave. He is optimistic, encouraged and happy with how Drew has worked and progressed. You act like he Christened him the next Tom Brady. I highly doubt that. Even Gran said that Johnson is not out of the running, but that Drew is clearly the No. 1 coming out of the spring.

You can only fight the man in front of you.

Not to mention DB was 1) missing his top running back (B. Williams); 2) running an incredibly vanilla offense; 3) only played for one half; and 4) was missing two of his top receivers (D. Baker, Bone) and his 2nd string TE (D. Long).

So.......yep, it makes me think.
