After the elating victory of the 2009 edition of the Battle for the Golden Egg a family member, who attended the U, and myself were watching the entrance to the locker room, hoping to catch a glimpse of the Head Coach or a few certain players. As we approach the fencing, my relative strikes up a conversation with the man in charge of letting recruits and their families in and out of the gate. At first I wasn't paying attention to their dialogue due to a few skirt-wearing girls in heels that were a few feet down the line, but after overhearing something about coming to work the following week I realized that the two worked together off campus. They finished talking and after a few minutes the man said, "What's that? You're part of a recruit's party?" and opened the gate. Speechless, we were hesitant to proceed but he winked and asked, "Aren't you?" We nodded and moved on.
In the locker room we met many coaches, players and recruits. Got to meet the Bag Man himself Mr. Melvin Smith, Boobie, Don Mullens and much more.
After all that excitement the party moved out onto the field, where the Golden Egg and a couple chairs were set up to have the Dan Mullen Show postgame interview. While we were waiting for the Man, we realized that an older gentleman is standing behind. We don't really pay him any attention, there were quite a few people around and I figured he was a family member of someone's. After a while my cousin nudged me and nodded in the older gentleman's direction. I look over to see Jack Cristil standing merely 10ft. from me.
We wait until he's is finished talking and approach him, tell him how much we enjoy hearing his voice and appreciate all he's done for the university, this and that, et cetera.
Then the question comes up about the music that they play before the game. "It's an insult to my damn intelligence!" he said. The look on his face explained his disdain much more than his words. "It's nothing but a bunch of crap. I don't know why the hell they play that ****." he went on. A whole bunch of goddamns, ***** and @#$@% later I walked away realizing that Jack Cristil was not what I had initially though of him - a well-mannered, prudent old man. He was a whisky drinking, cigarette smoking, cussing dawg of a man. (pun intedended)
He is a Man, the type of man that won World War II, the type of man that you often come across anymore. I gained a whole hell of a lot of respect for Jack Cristil that day, i got to see who he really was. He is a man that speaks his mind, a man that doesn't hold back for fear that he may hurt somebody's feelings and a man that loves MSU more that he loves his grandchildren.
May God bless the University, it's alumni, current students, and anyone affiliated with MSU the day Jack Cristil is Freed from Earth.
