the situation with the nascar driver (I think they said it was Jeremy Mayfield) testing positive for performance enhancing drugs?

What the hell do they test for and what might he have failed for? His suspension is indefinite.

I can see this with the pit crew but the driver is strange.</p>

I understand, I didnt watch my normal sportscenter this morning but heard it on Dan Patrick Show.

He acted as if it was roids not drugs

that it wasn't a PED. More like a Narcotic. I don't really see the point in testing Nascar drivers for drugs. Seems like a waste of money

So NASCAR shouldnt be concerned about a driver being out there driving under the influence of a drug? We are talking about someone who is driving a car 100+ MPH on a track with 40 other drivers.

would be dumb enough to drive under the influence of hard drugs. The races are only a few hours long. I'm sure even the hardcore addicts can probably take a breather from heroine or meth for that long.

Really? Isn't addiction all about needing the high to feel "right?" Besides, it's not like the morning after a coke binge (or any other binge for that matter) your head is exactly on straight.

And never underestimate the capacity for dumb people to do insanely stupid things.

Addiction isn't really about feeling "right". It's more about being physically addicted to a substance that you're body craves. But you're right, hardcore addicts probably would still use during a race.

If there is anytime you need a rush it's when you're driving a long monotonous drive for hours upon hours. Not saying that driving 200+ mph is monotonous, but after a few hours I am sure it gets pretty tiring.

One driver was suspended for using heroin on race day. Nascar won't say what he tested positive for, only that it was not booze.

So what exactly did Mayfield do?</p>

Did he take something to improve his strength, stave off fatigue or otherwise improve his performance? Or did he endanger the lives of his fellow competitors by operating a vehicle under the influence of an illegal street drug?</p>

Former Truck Series driver Aaron Fike certainly did, admitting last year to heroin use, even on race days. Fike's startling revelation led several of NASCAR's top drivers to call for a tougher drug policy.</p>

Fike wasn't the only one using. Lower-tier drivers Shane Hmiel received a lifetime ban in 2006 after a third failed test, and Kevin Grubb never raced again after a second suspension that same year. Grubb was found dead of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head in a Richmond-area motel last week.</p>

I totally disagree. Nascar is doing what other sports were too stupid to do. They are implementing a testing program BEFORE something becomes a widespread problem. Many other sports (especially baseball) waited until 90% of the participants are using something to start testing. That is like closing the barn door after the livestock have already left.

Nascar is also tougher with their penalties. They are not going to let a drug issue drag down the sport. Get rid of the few problems and move on.

Many think that Nascar drivers wouldn't use drugs. However, back in the 80's everyone thought steroids were only for bodybuilders, weightlifters, NFL linemen, etc. Everyone said that steroids would do no good for baseball players, especially pitchers. How did that theory turn out?
