It will be expensive no matter what until your child is mid 20s.
Put the kid in a beater sedan with 150K miles on it. No sports cars, trucks or SUVs. (Seriously, buying a 16 year old a new car is the dumbest thing a person can do.)
Some states offer slight discounts for driver’s education. I would recommend as much liability as you can afford to avoid litigation in the event of an accident, and no collision coverage on the older car. That’s how my folks did for me.

Minimum coverage liability is grossly inadequate. In Kentucky, it's $25k/$50k. That's lousy coverage.Don’t get minimum coverage policy is my advice.
Should always get an umbrella policy to cover both your premise liability and auto. Min $1M but it today’s environment probably $2M. The higher you go the more the attorneys go after. As a follow up, minimum coverage does not mean minimum liability. There have been a number of cases where a teen did something incredibly stupid behind the wheel that resulted in someone else’s kid getting seriously hurt or killed founding litigation where the injured/deceased sued the parents of the driver for amounts beyond minimum coverage. If you ever have more than minimum coverage it should in the very least be when you are insuring a young driver.
But the coffee is free, so...^ That's a long way to go to get your car serviced...
