I don't give 2 craps if you don't like Carino.

For some reason, the post on X is not loading- here's what it says: "
I've covered Steve Pikiell long enough (10 years) to know when he's confident and when he's bluffing, and I sense some real confidence about his young group's progress and Rutgers' internal support of the program. Here's more: https://app.com/story/sports/college/rutgers/2026/01/22/is-rutgers-basketball-turning-a-corner-on-and-off-the-court/88298406007/ via

Article may be paywalled, but should be readable on MSN and Yahoo when it shows up.

“Our defense is getting better,” Pikiell said. “It’s not where I wanted to be – we’re still counting on freshmen and they’re inconsistent. It’s probably the wrong time to be young, because college sports are so old, but there’s some reward. I’ve seen (freshman guard) Kaden Powers’ growth. I’ve seen (freshman guard) Lino Mark’s growth.”

“They’re getting more comfortable with their roles and I’m getting more comfortable with how to push the right buttons with them,” Pikiell said. “You have to learn that, too, as a coach. I yelled at a couple of guys early and they didn’t respond to it, so I had to learn how to coach them.”

“You can see (Buchanan's) versatility – he guards (Northwestern's high-scoring big man) Nick Martinelli and then he guards Stirtz,” Pikiell said. “I’m pleased with his approach to things. It got to the point (earlier in the season) where I thought he could do so much more, so I challenged him and he accepted the challenge. These guys all want to play more and I’m like, ‘OK, well then play better.’ It’s not the hardest equation in the world to understand.”

Sullivan is the new GM:

“Compared to the last three years, I feel very confident,” he said. “(Sullivan) is talking to everybody and knows the pulse, the market. How do you know the market if you’re not in the market every day? He said to me, ‘I don’t know how you did this for the last three years.’ It’s a full-time job. Today he’ll talk to 10 agents and come into my office and give me information about the lay of land.”

“I used to have to wake up thinking about money too, how are we going to afford this, what fundraiser do we have to do, who do I have to call?” he said. “Keli has taken that off my plate, too. It helps tremendously.”

I wish I shared his confidence…..Pike speaking of the GM and Keli Zinn now being in place taking tasks off the plate for a coach felt like benefits for the next coach. Pike really has dead man walking vibes at this point.

Clueless as usual, Pike is not going anywhere.
You make it sound like he’s here forever. With Zinn as the AD, is she likely to give Pike another year and allow him back for 26-27 season? I would say yes, but if next year is another dud of a season I think he will be a dead man walking. His career record is 156-150, he dug the program out of a hole but he has also been here 10 seasons. It’s not like he has earned the right to stay as long as he likes with multiple sweet 16 and final four trips. The results have been a very, very mixed bag especially considering the team had two lottery picks last year and produced terrible results. This year is no better and if next year is more of the same (seems very possible as the only thing we hear about is how RU can’t compete in the current NIL hoops landscape) then it seems the next logical step would be for the recently hired AD to put her stamp on the program with a coaching change.

I think a lot depends on

1) Getting someone to replace Knight

2) How many of the frosh he can get to stay, plus Buchanon and Dortsch

I know some will say Francis will leave if Knight is gone, possibly, however how many "tournament ready" teams are going to pay Francis for 1 year ?
Yes he can score, but he's not what many would describe as a team player, and he's a "small guard" JMike is in the same boat, how much value does he have to another team, and long term for him is best to stay at RU and get minutes as 3rd/4th guard.

With regard to Grant, if he is truly getting 750k, he needs to show something these next 6 weeks or .................................

Spend to get a quality, big man

Pike has proven he can coach, this frosh class has some talent, I think he desereves at least 1 more year with "real AD support" in the NIL world

I'm not sure he deserves it but I think Pike gets another year. I also thought that Knight would hit the road after this season, but I think he sticks around for one more with Francis. Either way, Pike is playing a dangerous game banking on keeping this freshman class as a core for next year. I could see all of them jumping into the portal. I assume the Euros will be one and done here.

how many of these frosh are going to get

1) the playing time they get here in another P4 program in 26/27?

2) much more $$$ then they get at RU ?

We need shooters

Basketball is ultimately about putting the ball in the basket and we lack guys that are good at it

We’re actually shooting ar a higher percentage than we have most years under Pike. How often do you think we’ve ever shot over 32% from 3? Spoiler alert - not often. The difference is our D. It stinks.

Are these returning players all of the sudden going to learn how to shoot or grow 4 inches? Team lacks shooters and scoring. That doesn’t change bringing back the same roster. Desperately need a PG, Shooter and a Center, with 2-3 years experience

Outside of the center, you want the opposite things that I’m hoping for. We’re shooting at our best percentage ever outside of when Dylan Harper was at Rutgers. We take less shots because we’re not as good at rebounding and forcing steals for extra chances / possessions.

The other thing is - we often bring guys in to shoot for us and then guys we didn’t bring in for that end up being our best percentage shooters (see Buchanan). It’s a waste. If Pike can truly fix the D with a few pieces in the portal (easier said than done), pick up a center who provides some punch on offense (doesn’t even have to be a star), and retain the nucleus of the current team - I believe we will be a lot better. Is it possible we would fall short of the NCAAs? Absolutely. But we should at least be in the hunt again with those changes. The first one is a big question mark. Pike hasn’t brought in a ton of D yet via the portal. Really just JY. He needs to come through with that.

I will say that Manny’s numbers are starting to look eerily similar to MJ’s numbers in 2018-19. If he’s eligible to return, perhaps our mission at center isn’t quite as daunting as it looked at the beginning of the season. We need a center, no doubt, but an addition of a Shaq Carter type scorer to balance the ticket might be okay with the right defensive piece at the 3-4. It’s really a matter of resource management - if we decide put our money towards a better offensive version of Caleb and a little less on the center that might be okay.

Don’t discount that kids do usually improve at D under Pike when they stay the course. Especially in the frontcourt. Bryce and Ogbole have both improved. I think Nwuli’s D will get better and Buchanan will continue to trend up on D along with the guards. Adding a D stopper at wing / SF with ball handling skills is probably top priority. We want to be able to have Francis be the smallest player on the court for stretches.

Glad he's confident, in what, who knows but they're down 20.

Totally in line with your MO. You are smarter than this.

I see lots of other d-bags are going to jump in and pile on because of one game. Some fans get what they deserve.

Re-read the quotes:

There is nothing going on upstairs, and if Zinn gives him a vote of confidence after this season, and there are no changes to the staff, than she needs to go with him.

I'll type slowly for all the emotional Veruca Salt I want it now types. Nowhere did the article say everything was fixed and there was a miraculous turnaround. Pike said he sees progess with the young team and they are still learning and developing. He also said the NIL situation looks better and that is off his desk. That probably means the program will have more money to bid for missing pieces than the last 2 years. Can't help those who could not understand the context.

Hes definitely here for another year he's getting the NIL money but I agree with you if he doesn't make changes to the staff and I know thats money than I agree with you because this staff is horrible; that is another one of Pikes faults he's so loyal to his staff that he won't make changes and he NEEDS to make changes; 10 years of watching a team run no offense get consistently beaten on pick and rolls on defense is just mind numbing
